Design Ideas For Long Living Room Wall – You have a new design bug coming up, but it’s complicated so we’ve created a formula to really understand it. This is what happens: you have this piece and you put it on one wall, and you have this piece and you put it on the other wall. You keep going until you think the room is ‘done’ and then you look around and wonder why the room isn’t just singing.
I understood that there is a formula, a science in which we see the decoration of the four walls of the room. In scientific terms, your eyes want to move at a pace that is both exciting and relaxing. It works with variety, keeping it interesting and a little unexpected, yet giving it some negative space and simplicity to calm it down a bit.

After years of observing my work/EHD I realize that we have a very intentional (yet organic) way of doing this. Here are the options (choose one for each wall):

That’s right – every wall in the room is answered with a different configuration of art/mirror or sculpture. Two things next to each other seem competitive and yet redundant. Imagine two gallery walls next to each other? Two large paintings? Two mirrors? Two chains or a diptych? It sure looks like you don’t, yet I see it over and over because we all just use what we have and hang it on the wall trying not to leave it empty. I understand that. we can help
Let’s take the Portland living room for example (let’s call it Exhibit A). We have a grid on the fireplace wall, one horizontal piece, one vertical piece and a diptych with a peek into the open dining room.
And then on the other walls, we have a ‘leaning gallery’, an empty wall because then we have a big vertical inclination. There are no mirrors or anything ‘sculptural’ but that’s because we have sconces that help add that three-dimensionality. See how your eyes never get bored and keep wandering?
Exhibit B – Our bedroom in Los Angeles. We have a large ‘piece’ (framed TV) for you, a mirror and I added a ladder that acts like a ‘sculpture’ or 3D piece.

On other walls, we have a vertical, two mismatched stacked pieces (mini-gallery), and a triple stacked mesh (sure that’s a sandwich Brian would like to eat), large vertical mirror cabinet (not shown). And yes you can have opposite mirrors in the room, just not next to each other.

Exhibit C – In the children’s room we have a gallery wall, a large canopy with two smaller pieces that match (a diptych of sorts), a mirror, a kite (3D), and a candlestick (another 3D creation). but more graphic than kites). Each wall has its own thing going on, but they all work together.

Exhibit D – our old bedroom. Above the bed a diptych, a single oval vertical mirror, three-dimensional candlesticks and a mixed stack (mini gallery).
This is an example of multiple mirrors in a room that still works. They are close but not on the same wall 🙂

Exhibit E – Portland Basement Family Playroom. Here we have a large focal piece next to a large gallery wall, a clock (rounded to move it), and even the swing add an ‘artistic’ dimension to this corner.

Exhibit F – Emily Bowser’s living room. Here we have a triptych (on its sides three-dimensional candlesticks), a large round mirror (to break up the squares). And across the room…
Here you have a vertical mirror, one horizontal piece and a piece of sculptural art in the background all different shapes that make this room sing.
G – Show the living room of Jess’s studio apartment. On an amazing floor-to-ceiling gallery wall, one vertical piece next to a vertical stick sculpture, a large mirror and the same peg hooks act as another three-dimensional sculpture.
H – Show Julie’s bedroom. Julie has really nailed it with her amazing range of wall art. First, there’s that amazing gallery wall full of 3D objects right next to the stacked neutral diptychs (nice balance). He then DIY’d that single vertical piece between his windows and his ‘raised from the wall’ horizontal triptych. To finish off the place, this tall ball mirror. Actually something interesting and different in every corner.

Do you have a big blank wall in your living room like mine? I don’t think every bare wall needs decorating, but I do think this wall needs something. I’m not sure what exactly! After searching for some inspiration, I’ve put together six favorite living room wall decor ideas to share!
Just to the right of the blank wall in the photo above you can see the solution I used to decorate the largest of the four walls in our living room – an art gallery wall! I used ten framed art prints to create an evenly spaced grid around our media console and TV:

My art prints are 18″ x 24″ matte brass framed art prints from Minted – you can’t buy my exact frames separately (my art is shipped pre-framed) but they are very similar and come in the same size and more or check if you are quite Great as they are out if not needed.
The same grid-like gallery wall can also be used on a large wall behind a sofa without removing the central frames as we did to accommodate the TV. You can also create a gallery wall with a more eclectic look like our home office. Check out my post on gallery wall ideas for tips on making your own!

How To Decorate A Blank Long Living Room Wall
I love this look and these fern prints are gorgeous! For a cheaper option, see if you can frame it yourself for less. I think it’s a neat idea to make a series of frames with a continuous image like for a beach style house:
