Design Ideas For Outdoor Stairs – External floating stairs provide egress from your home, as well as easy access from the raised deck to the ground level of the property. When choosing the type of stairs for your outdoor space, there are many style and material options to complement the design of your residential or commercial property.
Like interior stairs, exterior stairs must meet required building codes. For example, any ladder that is more than 12 feet vertically requires a landing. Building codes vary by state and municipality, so it’s important to check local building codes for requirements. For example, a 36-inch handrail meets building codes in most jurisdictions, but California requires a 42-inch handrail on stairs.
Design Ideas For Outdoor Stairs
Exterior stairs should be designed to fit the environment. Base material that can withstand the elements is an important factor. The metal construction required for a solid stone staircase is very different from that required for a composite, hardwood or tile base. Soil composition determines the requirements for subgrade stringer supports and anchors. These factors must be carefully considered to ensure the longevity of the ladder.
