Design Ideas For Pottery Painting – I love adding color to various household items to give them new life.
From terracotta pots to old wooden tables, cake boards and vases, I am inspired to refresh and brighten them up with my own colors. I’m always looking to recycle and paint things. Sometimes I buy something in stores or buy something from a collection on the street.
Design Ideas For Pottery Painting
Terracotta pots, old jugs, wooden blanks, acrylic paints, acrylic paints, brushes of various sizes, pencils (posca pencils or colored pencils), clear varnish or spray paint, and a bowl of water. Acrylic paint is great to use because it dries quickly and is easy to wash off the brushes with water. For outdoor pots, I use outdoor paint or acrylic paint to seal with outdoor varnish.
The Cutest Diy Idea Of Painting Plastic Flower Pots
I get my supplies from $2 thrift stores, thrift stores, Spotlight, and all kinds of places. You can get blank wooden forms and stuff at Bunnings and I get my blank nesting dolls from Dolls in Dolls.
Step 1 – I lightly sand and clean the surface and sometimes apply white paint to see the pencil lines. If the surface is a dark color, it is harder to see the pencil lines, so try using a white pencil.
Step Two – I draw my design in pencil, using an eraser to remove any excess pencil marks.
The third step. I use acrylic paint and acrylic markers to paint the design and let them dry in between. I use small jars, containers and lids to hold them while they dry. I like to paint the design on both sides, even if it’s just the patterns on the back. Generally at least two coats are needed to get a nice solid finish. For exterior items, I use exterior house paint or acrylic paint to seal with exterior varnish.

The fourth step. Once I’m happy with my design, let the paint dry thoroughly for a day or two before moving on to varnishing. I apply at least two coats of satin (waiting at least two hours between each coat) and make sure there are no big drips or leaks. For exterior items, I use exterior house paint or acrylic paint to seal with exterior varnish. For spray polish, I would do at least 4-5 coats because they are quite light. When Saša was little, I didn’t get as much time as I would have liked to indulge in a nice project. For me, making and creating is not just a pleasant past time, it is absolutely necessary to keep myself physically and mentally on an even keel. As an introvert, I need this time to recharge my batteries. The focus the activity requires calms my nervous system, keeps my mind from wandering, and allows me to be present in the moment.
So when I felt like I needed a concentrated 30 minutes in the middle of a busy day of looking after the little one, I took us to the “Pottery Painting Cafe” as they call it in the UK or Ceramic Painting here in the US (“Color Me Mine” Mr. familiar circuit). At the Pottery Painting Café, you can choose from a range of simple ceramic items such as plates, mugs or figurines, which are then decorated with the glazes and accessories provided.
Sasha loved painting pottery, like most kids, so it was a win-win situation. It’s amazing to see how much the little ones contribute when you take a picture with them. But hey, everyone is different and chances are you won’t be able to finish it all the way. You can always take some frosting with you and finish it off at home before returning it to the oven.
It must be said that this is not the cheapest activity on the planet, especially with several children. We didn’t get to do this as often as we would have liked, 8 times to be exact, because I was drawing a bowl to add to my collection each time we visited. Even with one visit a year, I end up with a wonderful collection of breakfast mugs with fond memories.
Best Ceramic Bowl Painting Ideas
Here are some tips, tricks and ideas on how to paint a beautiful collection of mugs yourself.
Everything you need is usually provided, but keep in mind that brushes are often in poor condition and you may not be able to find the size you want. I usually painted with what was offered, purely because I wasn’t organized enough to plan and bring my own brushes. That being said, I like the random results that an imperfect brush will give. But bring your own tools, especially if you plan to do a thorough job.
If you want to make a small collection, be sure to choose an object that you can find in any ceramic painting studio, such as plates, bowls or mugs. I have visited many different studios in the UK, Canada and the US so my gloss sizes and shades vary slightly. I love those little differences. The collection as a whole still works because of the consistent way they are drawn. If you’re a fan of a rustic yet sophisticated aesthetic like me, this is the way to go.
In my case, I kept one color and the same size/shape. This way I was free to explore different patterns.

If you prefer to use different colors, you can keep the same pattern on each bowl for consistency. Stick to one color and pattern if you plan to use different items (ie plate, cup and mug)
For rich, deep color, apply at least two thick coats of gloss. This is especially important on large surfaces if you want to achieve an even tone. In my case I did this for the inside of the bowls, but you can paint your object with the background color first. None of the external details are duplicated and the results are perfect.
How to make samples. Once the inside of the pan is painted, turn it upside down on a flat surface or turntable. In most cases, start in the middle, working outwards around the bottom ring. (See sketches below)
The designs are very simple. Don’t be afraid of imperfection. It’s okay if the dots are uneven or if the line becomes redundant. This will create a beautiful texture that is much more interesting to look at.

When working with iteration, try to work in “clusters”, ie. make families of dots/lines that are similar in thickness/size, then trace the area where you change either the size and/or spacing of the next cluster. I hope that makes sense.
As with many of my other projects, the emphasis of the exercise is on slowing down and working with intention. These days we don’t like to do things quietly and thoroughly. The repetitive nature of drawing patterns requires concentration without using a lot of ‘brain power’. You might think. “I don’t have time for that… what’s the point when we’re used to quick and easy solutions.” In the past half century, our lives have been created”
And more practical with the invention of useful items such as dishwashers, ready meals and of course, in recent years, handheld devices. So in theory we should have a lot more time. We don’t do dirty laundry by the river, so shouldn’t we be relaxing with a good book while the washer/dryer does the work for us? Well, we all know that we are more stressed than ever. Can we sustain this rapid exponential growth much longer? It was essential for me to find an “anchor” that could slow my mind and calm my blood pressure. Only when the chatter in my brain calms down can I begin to look at things objectively and (if necessary) have the mental space I need to re-prioritize my life. Therefore, please take some quality time for yourself. You might not feel it the first time, but you do when you usually pour yourself a glass of Chardonnay while drinking in front of Netflix. You may feel relaxed, inspired and energized 🙂
