Timeline charts are one of the best ways to make complex information more interesting, digestible, and easier to follow.
Customizable Timeline Templates
Tired of investing hours in expensive online design tools to create a timeline that should take minutes with a timeline template? Don’t have the budget to hire a designer to build for you?
At the end of the post you will find our Frequently Asked Questions about creating a schedule. You can also learn what an infographic is in our beginner’s guide.
Before I draw any new timeline charts, I like to start with a simple outline to guide me through the process. This step is critical because the layout of your timeline will largely depend on how much content you want to include. If you don’t know how much content to include in your timeline, you can choose the wrong layout and end up doing a lot of extra work.
The idea behind a timeline is that you want to provide a bit of information about key events over time, so each event should at least have a specific date and a brief description.

Since a timeline should be a visual summary of a series of events, try to keep the descriptions fairly short. I usually like to aim for less than 30 words per description and then try to liven it up with some visual elements like icons or illustrations to make it visually interesting.
Also keep in mind that having the same amount of text for each event will make it easier to create an attractive design that isn’t asymmetrical.
So, let’s say that for your next visual project, you’re creating an infographic timeline that shows the history of popular social media platforms. I would start by creating an outline with three of these four key elements: dates, headings, and brief descriptions.
I would then find a simple image, such as an icon, to accompany each point. These images are what distinguish a timeline infographic from a plain old timeline. They draw the reader’s attention, add visual interest, and make the chart easy to scan without thinking too much.

If you don’t have your own graphics ready, you can find some right in the editor. Just head to the left panel and use the icon search or photo search to find some fun images to go with your text:
This brief summary should be completed in the first step so that you can make smart design decisions in the future.
Having prepared an outline, it’s time to choose a design! This is where you can start making critical design decisions based on your schematic.
Some layout designs are better for long texts, while others suit many moments with less text. Let’s examine the strengths and weaknesses of each type of timeline design.

The vertical layout is by far the most popular layout for timeline charts. It comes in two alignments: center and left.
The centered vertical timeline is my personal favorite. In this layout, the timeline runs right down the center of the page, with branches coming out of alternating sides of the timeline:
Its symmetry and simplicity make it pleasing to the eye and extremely easy to follow. Most people will automatically recognize this as a timeline without studying it for more than a second.
It is also quite versatile. There is plenty of room for long descriptions and to add more points you can simply extend the length of the page. Plus, it’s easy to add visual elements to this type of design.

For example, this product roadmap timeline is a great example of a design with all the key stages mapped out vertically, from conception to completion. Perfect for keeping your team organized and on track by visualizing a product roadmap:
Next, we have the other most popular timeline infographic design: the left-aligned timeline. Instead of branching out from both sides of the timeline, the timeline itself is aligned to the left of the page and all content is placed to the right of the timeline.
They are ideal for those who want to present complex information hierarchically or as a series of steps. For example, if you’re a consultant outlining a product release timeline for your clients, this timeline chart would be the perfect way to do it:
The left-aligned vertical layout is ideal for a text-heavy timeline with few images and many sections. You can learn how to create a schedule like the example above by following the steps in this guide.

I recommend the vertical layout, either centered or left aligned, for most timeline charts because it’s very flexible. It’s the easiest to create, edit and adapt to all types of content.
You’ve learned how to create a vertical timeline. You might also recognize the horizontal timeline layout from every presentation you’ve seen in the last decade. They seem to be a staple of slideshows everywhere (like the one below):
While they work well on presentation slides, they are not ideal for most charts. They can only handle up to 6 or 7 points at a time (on a letter-sized page) before they become too crowded to read. If you have less than 7 points and your descriptions are very short, you can use a horizontal layout.
For example, if you want to raise capital for your new business idea, the timeline in the above presentation is the perfect addition to your presentation, showcasing your company’s milestones and impressing potential investors.

The final timeline layout you might want to use is the snake layout. Simply put, the snake design runs across the page and looks like a snake. The best use of a snake layout is for timelines with lots of dots and very little text, like this:
Snake designs save more space, which is useful if you have more than 10 or so stitches. The best way to learn how to create a timeline using the snake layout is to remember one rule: incorporate as little text as possible. Use this format when you want to focus on images:
Once you’ve decided on the layout, it’s time to finally answer: “how to make a schedule?” I’ll walk you through the process of creating the template below from scratch using our online schedule builder.
This is a fairly standard centered vertical timeline infographic template, so the steps I’ll outline here should apply to most infographic timelines.
Accurate Design Ideas-like Timeline; Issue #424 October 2 2018
Every timeline should be built around the same basic framework: a single line with branches or nodes at regular intervals. This may seem obvious, but it is absolutely critical.
First, start by selecting a vertical line from the Lines and Borders category of the icon library in the left toolbar. Center and adjust it so it spans the entire page, leaving room for a title at the top. This will form the backbone of your timeline.
Then adjust the style of this bar via the top toolbar. Use the line width drop-down menu to set the width of the main line to at least 2 pixels. For this line, we use a width of 4 pixels.
Then use the End of Line 1 and End of Line 2 dropdowns to add embellishments to each end of the line. We chose circles, but vertical lines and arrows would also work for most timelines.

Then be sure to lock the timeline in place using the “Lock” button on the top toolbar. This simple step prevents you from accidentally moving the line while adding more elements.
Finally, go back to “Lines and Borders in the Icon Library and add a horizontal line for each point of your outline. Use the grid to place them regularly on alternating sides of the main timeline.
Oh, and here’s an extra tip to make your timeline creation process easier: enable “Grid” on the top toolbar. This is useful when you need to align a lot
