The first day of school is stressful for everyone. Most middle and high school art teachers spend weeks preparing curriculum, writing curriculum, developing classroom rules, coming up with classroom procedures, thinking about art projects, lesson plans, and designing icebreaker activities or art lessons on the first day. We do everything we can to make sure we make a good impression on our students and show them that we are prepared, organized and ready to bring order to the art classroom.

In my first year of teaching, another teacher shared something with me that completely changed the way I looked at my priorities during the first few weeks of school. But proving to students directly that you are interested will automatically get their attention and make you more interested. When they see that you take the time to really pay attention and notice them, they will feel valued, important, worthy and interested in everything you do.
Remembering names used to be very difficult for me. But I realized it was because I had no intention of prioritizing it. My focus is always on hundreds of other things and learning is not at the top of it. I’ll try, but I’m not really trying.
I will forget the name and then move on to the next one on my list. So I don’t look bad or move late and get bored of my room. I would tell myself that I would go back there after I finished school or whatever job I did. I tend to get stuck and prioritize other things.
When I decided to get involved and learn a new way of learning and remembering, it wasn’t as hard as I thought. The difference it made in the comfort level of everyone in the class was huge.

This simple act allows me to develop deeper relationships with my students and earn their trust and respect more quickly. It amazed me when I could call the students by their names without cheating on the second day of class. My energy, mood and confidence increased and so did I.

This pop art design lesson is the perfect icebreaker for the first day of school. Students can create designs inspired by their famous pop art. It’s a great way for them to express their individuality while learning about the elements of pop art. Plus, bold and colorful results make for a great classroom display.
