Designs For Paper Lanterns – I love lanterns! Something about making such a functional, fun thing out of paper really brightens my day! I’ve shared many intricate lantern patterns, but this design is special because you can cut them out of a single sheet of paper. They’re so easy that you can cut and assemble enough for a party in just a few hours. This makes these cylinder paper lanterns the perfect last-minute, budget DIY option. I’ll show you how to create both designs and add your personal touch!

Designs For Paper Lanterns
The Hearts in Flight design features several hearts flying overhead and rotating around the lantern. Some hearts are simple, some complex, some broken and some full. But all the hearts in this DIY paper lantern represent love and light.
How To Create Paper Lanterns With 3 Free Patterns
I think this would make a great DIY paper lantern for many occasions. Use it to honor the death of a loved one. Make a white paper lantern the centerpiece of your wedding. Or simply display it on your desk as a reminder of all your love. I’d love to see how you use yours.
The intricate floral cylinder paper lantern design has a separate front and back, so it looks best from the front or side. I would love to see them grace their set!
Since some of the cuts on these beautiful lanterns are detailed, use the brazier to glue your paper to the car mat. If it’s not secure, the slits can shift the paper and ruin the entire project!
After the cuts are complete, I like to use a spatula to lift the delicate cut areas to avoid removing anything. And it is very easy to remove the remaining small pieces with a scraper.

You can then use your fingers or a weeding tool to lift the cut areas, creating subtle dimension and opening up the sections to let in more light (or color). I have detailed information in the guide below.
I tried both double sided tape and good quality craft glue to secure the seam into the flashlight shape. Both work well, so use whichever you like! Just make sure the top and bottom edges are even, otherwise the paper lantern may turn out crooked.
When you’re done, you can use the cylinder paper lantern in a number of ways. They would be perfect for a baby shower, birthday party or other event, but here are some ideas:
Reader Megan Barrett put a tea light in her heart…so sweet! Wondering where he got the medium and small lanterns? Check out my entry on the lantern puzzle below!

My heart fits into a flying cylinder paper lantern with an aromatherapy essential oil diffuser! With its color-changing LEDs, it’s even better than a tea light! If you want to get a similar LED diffuser, I’ve linked one in my content list.
Reader and supporter Sue Reeve had the great idea to transfer the lantern design to a wine bottle! This would be a great way to gift a bottle of wine or bubbly!

First, download Design #91 from my free resource library. If you are going to cut it on your cutting machine, upload the SVG to your design program. If you’re not sure how to upload an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space, check out this helpful video training series I created.

These are easy to make with a cutting machine like the Cricut—no layers or lines to worry about. Simply add the desired design to your canvas and click Create.
My Heart’s in Flight design is projected on 8.5″ x 11″ paper placed in landscape orientation on a green StandardGrip car mat. In the preparation screen, leave the material size 12″ x 12″ and then place the cardboard as I described to get the perfect result. The Cricut machine doesn’t know you told it to fib!
The mandala lantern looks best when cut on a 12″ x 12″ piece of cardstock. For best results prepare from the center of the screen mat.
IMPORTANT: None of these cut files contain the outline of the lantern, as the edges of your paper will determine this. You can use 8.5″ x 11″ or 12″ x 12″ paper. Simply place this die-cut design in the center of your paper and press.
Blossom Print Paper Lantern
Set the material to match the cardboard you are using and adjust the pressure to “high” for clean cuts.
Once your cardboard is cut, take the mat off and turn it over. Pull back the mat to release the card. You can also use a spatula to gently remove delicate details. Take your time so you don’t waste anything.
Next, you need to remove all the small pieces. For larger shapes, carefully fold each side so they are even with the surface of the paper. The easiest way to do this is to fold the paper slightly to catch one side of the shape under your finger, then fold gently. A weeding tool and a light table will help you find all the cuts.
Once all of your shapes are removed or folded, gently fold your paper into a cylinder and seal it shut with tape or glue. When doing this you may find it helpful to place the paper around a cylindrical object, such as a candle or bottle.

You can enjoy your handmade paper lanterns as is, or add additional color by adding rolled 8.5 x 11″ or 12″ x 12″ colored paper or paper. I like it both “nude” and with the colored insert!
Add LED lights and enjoy your cylinder paper lantern! If you add paper inside, you can add string lights inside. The liner will keep them from getting cuts!
It’s that simple and you’ll have a great selection of cylinder lanterns in no time! Try experimenting, like making colored paper lanterns using your favorite color, or opening the hearts up by different amounts to make the light look more natural.
Answer: I have used both double sided tape and high quality craft glue to seal round paper lanterns with good results. Just make sure the tape is very secure or the glue is very dry before leaving.

Summer is here and it’s time to get ready to celebrate your Independence Day. There are many fun ways to celebrate the 4th of July, but in this tutorial I want to share a project that will add some magical sparkle to your evening: Patriotic Paper Lanterns!
Paper lanterns have been used around the world for centuries and are still popular today. Most of us are familiar with the popular paper lanterns from China and Japan, but they are also becoming more popular for weddings, proms, and other celebrations.

I think it’s fair to say that paper lanterns are popular around the world for several reasons:
Paper lanterns can be one of the most beautiful ways to decorate night gatherings. They also make great gifts at your events. Because everyone loves to receive something handmade with love!
In this tutorial you will learn how to make four paper lanterns with a “patriotic” theme. We’ll walk you through every step, from uploading files to Cricut Design Space to lighting them. We’ve also shared lots of tips and FAQs along with video tutorials so anyone can do it.
Scoring Wheel vs. Scoring Stylus: If you only have a scoring stylus, you can definitely use that. However, the scoring wheel will give a deeper crease, making it easier to fold the lantern later.

Wax Paper: I choose wax paper because it looks great when burned and is very affordable. However, if you don’t have wax paper, you can use parchment paper or paper. However, measuring or cutting them may not be so easy.
