While some landscape architects consider schematic design to be a sub-phase within the “Conceptual Design” phase (more on that later), we think of schematic design in its own right for any plan that includes outdoor spaces and circulation between them.

The schematic design phase (which we refer to as “SD” in our workflow) is all about exploration and discovery. It is a process dreamer, an idealist. Its purpose is to find the optimal relationship between different spaces in the landscape, as well as between the landscape and the house or the existing environment. It’s a treasure hunt, a puzzle and a magical mystery journey all rolled into one.

Because it focuses on how the spaces in the landscape will be used and not so much on how they look, different landscape designers call this stage by different names: functional diagrams, spatial relationships, design concepts, or bubble diagrams, for loose circles that we quickly sketch to show the general position of each function in the site.
To further confuse matters, the architecture industry often still uses “schematic design” to describe buildings whose dimensions and shapes are actually fairly well defined, rather than just the spatial relationships of their rooms and functions. We, however, claim that they are far above
SD phase—because the very definition of a “schematic diagram” is a simplified, abstract graphical representation of system elements. One of the best schematic diagrams we’ve ever seen is a map of the London Underground system.

Then we start matching (1) with (2): Should the outdoor dining room be in the sun or in the shade? Is this area too cold for a pool? How should the outdoor kitchen be combined with the indoor one? Where is the best sunny spot for an indoor rose garden? There are a lot of explored what-ifs, and a lot of false starts. Our goal is to generate as many ideas as possible, even the bad ones. Sometimes the solutions are obvious: a classic design may require the pool to be on axis with the lines of the house. Often, however, the obvious solution isn’t actually the best; and even if we think we’ve found the answer, we keep going. Persistence leads to cheerfulness. “Good enough” is not. We can develop a dozen concepts in the hope of giving two viable options. The process is a mental sprint, so we tend to work in relatively short bursts – maybe hour by hour, maybe twice a day, maybe over the course of a week. A drop in income tells us it’s time to put down the pen and turn to something else for a while, to let the creative reserves renew.
How do we decide which concepts to present to the client? We return to the design program and ask which of our newborn concepts solves our needs in the most elegant, original and effective way. Ideally we will present four or less; any more than that, and it’s pretty sure we won’t be showing the best of the best. Our guiding question is, “would we be happy if the customer chose this?”

But are they the same? Technically, diagrams are also drawings, because we ‘draw’ them. However, they are not construction drawings that show exact dimensions or materials. With architectural diagrams, we visualize the idea. Only when the project is finalized, we create construction drawings based on 3D models. If you use AutoCAD, you will create these drawings individually. But with a BIM tool like Autodesk Revit, these drawings can be produced automatically. This is one of the main arguments in the AutoCAD vs. Revit debate. Are architectural diagrams just visually appealing? While it is true that architectural diagrams convey design ideas, there are different types of diagrams, each with its own function. They are generally more colorful and artistic than sketches and technical drawings, so for many architects they are more of an afterthought as a way to create attractive graphics for presentations. In reality, architectural diagrams replace a busy paragraph full of text. Remember – a picture tells a thousand words. Wherever possible, use diagrams to represent your ideas on presentation boards and architectural portfolios, rather than writing a long paragraph describing what’s going on in your design. Regardless of the type, there are some similarities: each element in the diagram is marked with a color and a legend. It is important to use the correct arrows and lines. It may just be a diagram, but the thickness of the lines and arrows cannot be ignored. Ultimately, it is up to the architect to decide how to present the information. The 9 architectural diagrams below are the most common types of diagrams that architects love. 1. Section These diagrams show a conceptual idea with a vertical section of the building. Typically, a sectional architectural diagram includes indications of program, vertical circulation, ventilation, landscaping and daylighting. Although not to the scale of the actual building, the diagram relates every aspect of the design to human scale. Therefore, it cannot be used as a guide for the construction phase. 2. Planimetric If cross-sectional diagrams show vertical circulation, planimetric diagrams show horizontal circulation in space through the floor plan. This type of architectural diagram is often used for spatial composition and relationships, programs and views. 3. Axonometric To combine horizontal and vertical elements, we can use axonometric architectural diagrams where concepts and elements are seen ‘from the outside’.
