When we were children, preparations for Diwali in our family started a few weeks before the festival. At the same time, the atmosphere inside homes and in city markets will intensify. People are naturally motivated to create memories by decorating your home, both inside and out. However, for those living outside India, it may be a little different.

Outside India, Diwali is not celebrated by most people. There is no enthusiasm for Diwali outside our homes or in the markets. Despite this, we do our best to pass down and pass down our cultural traditions to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories as us.

Every Diwali I try to entertain the children with all the decorations, lights and firecrackers. Now they wait for it every year. Even if your schedule doesn’t allow you time to implement all the ideas presented here, do what you can. Something is better than nothing. I will share some ideas for Diwali decorations at home which you can use entirely or partially as you see fit.

Diwali is the festival of lights. Decorative outdoor lighting is my husband’s job, he makes it really interesting and gets everyone’s attention in the neighborhood. The pictures don’t do the effort justice, but the overall lighting effect is amazing.

He used professional installers for the skylights, which cost about $500. He can provide the rest of the lighting himself, as it can be safely reached via a simple ladder. For the paths and circles around the lamppost, he used programmable LED string lights. He decided to opt for LED string lights for tree trunks, house poles and large plantations. Conventional LED track lighting was used to create a pyramid around the street lamp.

The kids loved helping with the Diwali decorations, making it a family project. A young boy was busy operating lighting poles, while a high school student expounded on his ideas and handed the tools to his father on the stairs.

Be sure to use proper GFCI protected circuits to power the lights and take precautions against electrical hazards when installing the lights.

In Hindu tradition the main door has a special meaning. Many Indian traditions involve decorating and performing various rituals in the home or at the entrance to the puja room. The same goes for Diwali decorations.

During my last visit to India. These are some of the usual things I get whenever I come back from India. Diya refers to an earthen lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. Nowadays, you can purchase decorative diyas at Indian grocery stores in every major city in the United States. They are also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit your local store.

After much research, I decided to use artificial flowers that I found on Amazon. I was happy with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I also used fresh flowers from my garden and a local shop. The lights were purchased from Pier1 Imports.

Rangoli can be made with both colors and flowers. Since I have a small child, powdered paints didn’t seem like a good idea. So I opted for a simple design that can be made quickly in 10-15 minutes using a combination of natural and artificial flowers.

Did you notice the urli before the Rangoli? A brass bowl for holding hollers, floating candles and flowers will add another dimension to any festive or ethnic decor. Bring your static decor to life by making it dynamic with changing lights and flowers.

Next is the entrance foyer, which is the first look any visitor will have inside your home. It creates a first impression and anticipation to see what else is in store. It should convey the festive atmosphere of your home, and at the same time make you want to come inside to get into the festive spirit. The foyer decor featured here uses a central Ganesh idol sitting on a pointed medallion table and surrounded by ornaments consisting of brass artefacts and ornate candle holders.

I used my existing bangles as candle holders, they are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a large collection of bracelets, so I borrowed some from here to decorate the lights.

The Ganesh idol was gifted to us by my brother-in-law. Here I have used brass bowls as urlis. It is not necessary to purchase urlis or use brass items to include urlis as a decor item. Any shallow bowl with a flat top can be used to create the same effect.

In the photo above, I have used kundan Rangolis to decorate the floor. Alternatively, you can use Rangoli designs as shown below. In my case, with a child running around, it lasted a few hours.

You can add small decorations in different places of the house to change the overall look of the house and make it festive. For example, I decorated my living room coffee table with candles and flowers.

You can easily see that I am a big fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decor are from that store. Whether you are looking at the table, trays, and lamps, all items are from Pier1 imports that I have collected over time. I move them around the house to create new decorations using different combinations.

I have a set of guides and trays. They are my weakness. So whenever I see a good designer piece, I buy it for future use. The trays provide a defined space and a focal point of attraction, allowing you to focus on a limited space. Runners add another texture to the space, help create color contrast, and further enhance other decorative elements. I also used kundan Rangoli as space fillers to give an ethnic touch.

Another example is the mantel, which is usually the focal point of the living room in an American home. You can create a beautiful ethnic decor simply by placing a few artifacts on the hearth and in the space in front of the hearth.

Here I have used a combination of three independent elements to create diversity with the common goal of representing the various ethnic elements of India. I have combined two beautifully decorated elephant heads with nettipattam with brass musical instrument artefacts. I fell in love with the cute elephant heads of Nettipattam during my trip to Kerala and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I love the originality they add to any space I use.

The last but the most important place to decorate your home on the occasion of Diwali is the pooja room and temple. Laxmi pooja is the most important component of the entire Diwali celebration held in the pooja hall of the temple. My family moves every few years due to the nature of my husband’s job. So even if I want a separate room for pooja, I have to share it with the office.

So I use a handmade wooden temple with Rajasthani workmanship, with a matching background. This backdrop uses tulle fabric embellished with peacock feathers, pearl bandhanwar and pearl string. The ends of the tulle are tied using brass elephant diyas. This setup enhances the pooja angle.

Even the door to the pooja room that I share with my home office is decorated with bandhanwar and flowers. Try adding small details like satya stickers and maha-laxmi footprint stickers. The swastika is associated with Ganesha, while the footprints of Maha-Laxmi are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details can greatly enhance the impact of your decor.
