Outside of India, Diwali is not celebrated by the majority of the population. There is no enthusiasm for Diwali outside our homes or in the markets. Nevertheless, we try our best to pass on our cultural traditions to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories as ours.

Every Diwali I try to get the kids excited with all the decorations, lights and bonfires. Now they look forward to it every year. Even if your busy schedule doesn’t leave you time to implement all the ideas mentioned here, do what you can. Something is better than nothing. I am sharing some ideas from my home Diwali decorations that you can use in whole or with parts that suit you.
Diwali is the festival of lights. Decorative outdoor lighting is my husband’s job and this really lifts it up and attracts all the neighbors. The pictures don’t do the action justice, but the overall effect of the lighting was amazing.
He used professional installers to cover the ceilings, which cost about $500. He can do the rest of the lighting himself, as it can be safely accessed using a normal household ladder. For the paths and circles around the lamp post, he used programmable LED rope lights. He decided to use grid-style LED lights for tree trunks, house posts and large pots. A regular LED string light was used to create a pyramid around the bulb.
The kids loved helping with the Diwali decorations, making it a family project. While the little boy was busy catching spikes for the rope light, the high school student pitched his ideas and passed the tools to his father on the stairs.

Please use appropriate GFCI-protected circuits to power your lights and take precautions to prevent electrical hazards when installing lights.
In Indian tradition, the main door has a special significance. Many Indian traditions revolve around decorating and performing various rituals at the entrance of a house or puja room. Same goes for Diwali decorations.
During my last visit to India. These are some of the usual items that I pick up from India every time I visit. Diya refers to an earthen lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. These days, you can buy decorative diyas at Indian grocery stores in almost every major city in the United States. They are also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit your local store.
After a lot of research, I decided to use artificial flowers that I found on Amazon. I was pleased with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I also used fresh flowers from my garden and from the local grocery store. The bulbs were purchased from Pier1 Imports.

You have the option to make Rangoli with colors and flowers. Since I have a baby, powder colors didn’t seem like a good idea. So I went with a simple design that can be done quickly in 10-15 minutes with a combination of natural and artificial flowers.
Have you noticed the URL before Rangoli? Made to float candles and flowers, Urli’s brass bowl adds a different dimension to festive or ethnic decorations. Breathe life into your static decor by making it dynamic with floating candles and flowers.
Next is the entry foyer, which is the first view every visitor will have inside your home. It creates a first impression and anticipation to see what comes next. It should evoke the desire to enter to immerse yourself in the holiday spirit and reflect the holiday spirit of your home. The foyer decor presented here uses a center piece of Ganesh idol sitting on a beaded medallion table and surrounded by brass artefacts and beautiful candlelight.
I used existing bracelets as candle holders, they are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a huge collection of bracelets, so I borrowed from here to decorate the tea lights.

Ganesh idol was gifted to us by my in-laws. Here I used copper plates as urlis. You don’t need to buy urlis or use copperware to add them as a decorative piece. You can use any shallow dish with a flat top to create the same effect.
In the picture above, I have used kundan rangolis to decorate the floor. Alternatively, you can use a Rangoli design as shown below. In my case, with a running baby, it only lasted a few hours.
You can change the overall look and feel of your home by adding small decorations to different places inside the house and give it a festive feel. For example, I spruced up my living room coffee table with candles and flowers.
You can easily see that I am a huge fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decor are from that store. Whether you’re looking at a table runner, or trays and candles, all of the items are from Pier1 imports that I’ve collected over time. I use them around the house to create new decorations using different combinations.

I have a nice collection of runners and trays. They are my weakness. So whenever I see a piece by a good designer, I buy it for future use. trays provide a specific space and focal point of attraction that allows me to focus on a limited space. Runners can add another texture to a space, help bring color contrast and enhance other decor elements. I also used kundan rangolis as filler in between the space to give an ethnic touch.
Another example is fireplace mantels, which are a staple of the living room in an American home. You can create beautiful ethnic decorations by simply placing a few artefacts above the hearth and in the space in front of the hearth.
Here I have used a combination of three independent elements to create a variety with the overall goal of representing the various ethnic elements of India. I used artefacts of brass musical instrument two elephant heads decorated with nettipattam. I fell in love with the adorable Nettipattam elephant heads when I visited Kerala and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I love the authenticity they add to any space I use.
It’s a collection of diyas, kunda rangolis, fresh flowers with a carefully selected placemat and a creative hub that anyone can easily take from the picture. The Shimmer Pearls & Twigs Placemat and the Glitz Beaded Silver Placemat are both available at Pier1 Imports.
Diwali Decoration Ideas At Home
The last but the most important place to decorate your home on Diwali is the pooja room and temple. Laxmi pooja is the most important component of Diwali celebration which is held in the pooja room of the temple. My family moves every few years due to my husband’s work. So, even though I want a separate pooja room, I have to share it with the office.
So I use a Rajasthani and handmade wooden temple with a matching backdrop. This backdrop uses peacock feather embellished tulle fabric, pearl bandhanwar and pearl thread. The ends of the tulle fabric are tied with brass elephant dias. This setup enhances the pooja angle.
The door of the pooja room that I share with my home office is also covered with bandhanwar and flowers. Try adding some details like sathya stickers and maha-laxmi footprint stickers. The swastika is associated with Ganesha and the maha-Laxmi footprint is associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details will enhance the impact of your decoration.
