Diwali Decoration Ideas For Living Room – It all started with a quick message from Ridhi Kale asking if she would like to do a Diwali home decor feature on India Today. A message like that makes you stop, and then stop again. India at home today? Did you want the position? How could I say no to that?
Only they worked to a deadline. I had three days to prepare everything. This in the middle of an already crazy work week that was made even crazier by other collaborations around Diwali and because I was out of town on the fourth day. Every hour was already planned and Diwali decorations for our house were nowhere on the agenda.
Diwali Decoration Ideas For Living Room
I usually find that the hours in a day are not enough for all the work that needs to be done. When I start thinking about how and when I’m going to do something, it sometimes becomes overwhelming.
Diwali Living Room Makeover
That’s why I made a simple rule for myself. don’t think If an interesting opportunity presents itself, say “Yes” first. Once you make a commitment, you automatically start working towards it and everything falls into place.
So what a commitment, it was three days away and I had no idea what I was going to do. I knew I didn’t have time to go shopping, so plan 1 was to use whatever I already had at home. Mom came to the rescue here. I called her and asked her to send me anything she thought would be a worthy Diwali decoration. This included candles, diyas, dupattas, shawls and all their brassware.
So I started surfing the Internet. I scoured Pinterest and my own blog posts looking for Diwali decorating ideas. That’s what I usually do when I’m looking for ideas from scratch. Bombarding myself with beautiful images gives me a mental picture of where I’m going.
The first place I wanted to decorate was our foyer. With a festive card you are already anticipating and wondering what else is in it.
Last Minute Diwali Decoration Ideas
The thing was, I was busy decorating for Diwali a month in advance. It seemed like a huge waste of time to have to do it again just before Diwali. So plan 2 was to keep all my decorations from now until Diwali so that I don’t have to decorate again.
This meant there were fresh flowers. I used these faux marigold strings I had and just hung them like a Buddha drop. Another advantage of using artificial flowers was that I could set this up a day in advance. I didn’t have to wait for fresh flowers the morning of the photo shoot itself.
Next came the second entrance…the one from the foyer to our living room. I decided to use dupattas to make this into a beautiful bed sheet.
The local carpenter helped attach the 5 hooks at the top of the door. I then folded each dupatta in half lengthwise and placed a safety pin at both ends and in the middle of the dupatta. I simply hung the safety pin on the hook and it gave me the beautiful scallops at the top of the curtain.

Next came the marigold along the edge of the curtain. There was no way I could do this again, so fake flowers came to the rescue again. I tied these marigold strings along the dupatta using needle and thread and stitched around the stem 3-4 times. I did this at a distance of every 5 to 6 flowers.
Then I had to hook the two dupattas at different heights on the side of the door to place them on top of each other. After trying a variety of double-sided tape hooks that kept falling off, I finally got my hands on these command hooks that stayed strong and didn’t budge. A strand of embroidery thread went around the curtain where I wanted to hang it. I tied this loose enough that I could loop the same rope over the wall hook.
Next came the dining area. This is done on one side of our living room and when we do this it makes our entire living room feel festive.
I saw a beautiful floral candle holder in our Diwali Decor Ideas post, which made me think a marigold candle holder would look perfect above our dining room table. This was easy enough to do.

The logic behind the chandelier was the same as the rest of the decor. I used artificial flowers and leaves so they will last throughout the holiday season. I started with the vegetables and wrapped them around the ring, one thread at a time.
The hoop got a little heavy with the greens on it and became difficult to handle. So I hung it from the rafters with black embroidery thread. The existing pendant lights from the trusses above were in the way of the hoop. I pulled this up to meet the rafters so I had room for the chandelier to hang underneath.
Next came these gold fillings, twisted into the ring at regular intervals, to add some sparkle to the chandelier.
I finally added a string of Christmas lights to the chandelier and now it sparkles when I turn off the pendant lights above.
Diwali Decorating Ideas
A festive red and gold tablecloth and a large bouquet of fresh flowers completed the festive look. A bronze urn for the flowers along with the large bronze lamps totally says ‘Diwali’.
Finally, inspired by a photo from our Marigold Decorating Ideas post, I hung garlands of fresh marigolds behind our dining room chairs. Our dining alcove was all set for Diwali.
This left the living room. We also had to make it look festive. This beautiful and cheerful phulkari from mom’s collection was perfect to brighten up the cream sofa.
A bunch of copperware, candles, diyas and fresh marigolds also made the living room festive in no time.

Then it was Danesh’s turn to work his magic. We thought it would only take a few hours, but it took him almost as long to film the house as it took me to put it all together. Every time I finished clicking on a “scene”, I calmly handed him my phone to take some pictures too, and he happily obliged. So the photos you see here today are largely his.
I don’t know how many more hours he must have spent filtering and editing all the photos he took, but this was the end result.
I don’t know what it looks like to you, but it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. There is something magical about being able to see your work in print and I can’t really explain the satisfaction and pride I feel every time I hold this copy in my hand. Maybe it’s because it’s the first time. Maybe next time I won’t be so excited… and maybe I will!
I went from rushing to finish the Diwali decorations every year and get the photos up on the blog in time, to decorating well in advance this year… I couldn’t share any photos until the article was published. It was worth the effort and wait.
