As a child, preparations for Diwali in our family began a few weeks before the actual festival. At the same time, the mood in the house and on the city markets would increase. People are naturally motivated to create memories by decorating their home inside and out. However, for those of us living outside India, things may be a little different.

Outside India, Diwali is not celebrated by the majority of the population. There is not much enthusiasm for Diwali outside our homes or in markets. Nevertheless, we do our best to pass on our cultural traditions to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories as us.
Diwali Decor Ideas: Glam Up Your Home This Festive Season!
Every Diwali I try to create excitement among the children with all the decorations, lights and fireworks. Now they look forward to it every year. Even if your busy schedule doesn’t allow time to implement all the ideas presented here, do what you can. Doing something is better than doing nothing. I am sharing some ideas of my Diwali decorations for home that you can use in whole or in parts that suit you.
Diwali is a festival of lights. My husband is responsible for the decorative outdoor lighting and he really spices it up and catches the attention of everyone in the neighborhood. The pictures don’t do the effort justice, but the overall effect of the lighting is stunning.
He hired professional installers to light the headliner, which cost about $500. He was able to do the rest of the lighting himself as it could be safely reached with a normal house ladder. He used the programmable LED fairy lights for driveways and circles around the lamppost. He chose mesh-like LED lights for the tree trunks, house columns and large planters. A normal LED string of lights is used for the pyramid around the lamp post.
The children loved helping with the Diwali decorations, making it a family project. The toddler was busy making the spikes for the fairy lights while the middle schooler had her ideas and handed tools to the father to climb the ladder.

Please ensure that you use the appropriate GFCI protected circuits to power your lights and take precautions against electrical hazards when installing lights.
In Indian tradition, the main entrance has a special meaning. Many Indian traditions revolve around decorating and performing various ceremonies at the entrance of the house or pooja room. The same applies to Diwali decorations.
On my last visit to India. These are some of the common little things that I notice whenever I visit India. Diya refers to the earthen lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. Today, decorative diyas can be purchased at Indian grocery stores in almost all major cities in the United States. They are also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit the local store.
After a lot of research, I decided on artificial flowers that I found on Amazon. I was thrilled with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I also used some fresh flowers from my garden and local shop. The lamps were purchased from Pir1 Import.
Diwali Decoration Ideas: 10 Creative Ways To Light Up Your Festivities
You have the option to make the Rangoli using both colors and flowers. Since I have a toddler, powder colors didn’t seem like a good idea. So I chose a simple design that can be made quickly in 10-15 minutes using a combination of natural and artificial flowers.
Did you notice the URL before Rangoli? Urli, a brass bowl for floating candles and flowers, adds a different dimension to any festive or ethnic decor. It adds life to your static decor by making it dynamic with floating lights and flowers.
Next comes the entry foyer, which is the first look for every visitor to your home. It creates the first impression and the anticipation of seeing what else is out there. It is designed to convey the festive mood of your home while creating a desire to enter and immerse yourself in the festive spirit. The foyer decoration featured here consists of a Ganesha idol as the centerpiece, sitting on a beaded medallion table runner and surrounded by decorations of brass artifacts and ornate tealight holders.
I used my existing bangles as tealight holders, which are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a huge collection of bangles so I borrowed some here to decorate the twilights.

The Lord Ganesha was blessed by my brother-in-law. Here I have used the brass bowls as the URL. To add URL as a decorative piece, you don’t need to buy it or use a brass bowl. To achieve the same effect, you can use any shallow, flat-bottomed bowl.
In the picture above, I have used Kundan Rangolis for floor decoration. Alternatively, you can use a rangoli design like the one shown below. In my case, with a walking toddler, it only took a few hours.
Inside the house, you can add small decorations in different places to change the overall look and atmosphere of your home and make it look more festive. For example, I enriched my coffee table in the living room with candles and flowers.
It’s easy to see that I’m a big fan of Pier1 imports. Most of the items in this decor come from the store. Whether you are looking for the table runner or the tray and candle, all items are from Pier1 Imports that I have collected over time. I move them around the house to create new decors with different combinations.

I have a good collection of runners and trays. You are my weakness. So when I see a good designer piece, I tend to buy it for future use. Trays provide a defined space and focal point, allowing me to focus on the limited space. Runners give the room a different structure, provide color contrasts and enhance other decorative elements. I also used kundan rangolis as fillers between spaces to give it an ethnic touch.
Another example is the fireplace decoration, which is usually the focal point of the living room in an American home. You can create a beautiful ethnic decoration by simply placing a few artifacts on the fireplace and in the room directly in front of the fireplace.
Here I have used a combination of three independent elements to create variety, with the common goal of highlighting the various ethnic elements of India. I used two beautifully decorated elephant heads with nettipattam in combination with artifacts of brass instruments. I fell in love with the adorable Nettipattam elephant heads while visiting Kerala and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I love the authenticity they add to any room I use them in.
It is a mix of diyas, kunda rangolis, fresh flowers with carefully selected placemats and a creative centerpiece that anyone can easily put together from the picture. The Pearl & Twigs Shimmer Placemat and Glitz Beaded Silver Placemat are both available at Pier1 Imports.
Diwali Flowers (seasonal)
The last but most important place that you can decorate in your home on the occasion of Diwali is the pooja room and temple. Laxmi Pooja is the most important part of the entire Diwali celebration which is performed in the Pooja room in the temple. Due to the nature of my husband’s work, my family moves every few years. Although I would like to have a separate pooja room, I have to share it with the office now.
Therefore, I use a handcrafted wooden temple with Rajasthani work and a matching background. This backdrop is made of tulle fabric decorated with peacock feathers, beaded ribbon hanwar and beaded strings. The ends of the tulle fabric are tied together with brass elephant slides. This setup enhances the pooja angle.
The door to the pooja room, which I share with my home office, is also covered with bandhanwar and flowers. Try adding small details like Sathya stickers and Maha Laxmi footprint stickers. The swastika is associated with Ganesha, and the footprints of Maha-Laxmi are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details greatly enhance the impact of your interior.
