People naturally create memories by decorating the inside and outside of your home. However, the situation may be different for us living outside India.

Outside of India, most people do not celebrate Diwali. There is not much enthusiasm for Diwali outside our house or in the markets. However, we try our best to teach and pass on our cultural traditions to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories that we did.

Diwali 2024: Creative Diwali Decoration Ideas To Brighten Up

Every Diwali I try to get the kids excited with all kinds of decorations, lights and crackers. Now they wait for this day every year. Even if your busy schedule doesn’t allow time to implement all the ideas presented here, try your best. Doing something is better than nothing. I’m sharing some ideas for Diwali decorations for my home, which you can use as a whole or divide into parts as you like.

Diwali is the festival of lights. The outdoor decorative lights are my husband’s responsibility, he is really active and attracts the attention of everyone nearby. The pictures don’t do the effort justice, but the overall effect of the lighting is amazing.

He hired a professional installer to install the roof liner lights, which cost about $500. He can do the rest of the lighting work himself as it can be safely accessed using a standard household ladder. He used programmable LED rope lights for the driveway and circles around the light poles. He decided to use mesh LED lights for tree branches, house columns and large flower pots. Standard LED string lights are used to create a pyramid around a light pole.

Kids love to help with the Diwali decorations, making it a family project. The toddler is busy manipulating pegs for the rope lighting, while the middle school student pitches her idea and hands the tools to Dad on the ladder.

Be sure to use the proper GFCI protected circuit to power the light and take electrical hazard precautions when installing the light.

Gates have special significance in Indian tradition. Many Indian traditions decorate and perform various rituals at the entrance of a house or puja room. The same applies to Diwali decorations.

During my last visit to India. These are some of the common items I buy from India whenever I visit. Diya refers to the earthen lamps used in the Indian subcontinent. Today, you can buy decorative diyas at Indian grocery stores in almost every major city in the United States. If you don’t have time to go to a local store, you can also buy it on Amazon.

After much research I decided to use artificial flowers found on Amazon. I am pleased with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I also used some fresh flowers from my garden and local stores. The lights were purchased from Pier1 Imports.

You can choose to make rangoli with colors and flowers. Since I have a small child, powder colors didn’t seem like a good idea. So I chose a simple design that can be quickly created by combining natural and artificial flowers in 10 to 15 minutes.

Notice the url in front of Rangoli? Urli is a copper vessel used to hold floating candles and flowers, adding a different dimension to any festive or ethnic decoration. Bring your static decor to life with floating candles and flowers.

Next is the entry foyer, the first place any visitor sees your home. It creates first impressions and expectations, allowing people to see what else is out there. It should convey the festive mood of your home while creating a desire to enter and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere. In the foyer decor shown here, a seated Ganesha centerpiece on a beaded medallion table runner is surrounded by antique brass centerpieces and decorative tea light candle holders.

I used existing bracelets as tealight holders, they are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a huge collection of bangles, so I borrowed from here to decorate the tea lights.

Diwali Decoration Ideas To Illuminate Your Space

Ganesha was a gift from my brother-in-law. Here I have used brass bowls as urlis. To add urlis as decoration, you don’t need to buy them or use a brass vessel. You can use any flat-top shallow bowl to create the same effect.

In the above picture, I have used kundan rangolis to decorate the floor. Alternatively, you can use a rangoli design as shown below. In my case, with a running toddler, it only lasted a few hours.

Indoors, you can add some small decorations in various places to change the overall look and feel of your home and make it feel more festive. For example, I decorated my living room coffee table with candles and flowers.

You can easily tell I’m a big fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decor came from that store. Whether you’re looking at tablecloths, trays or candlesticks, all items are from Pier1 Imports and have been collected by me over the years. I constantly move them around the house using different combinations to create new decorations.

I have a large collection of runners and trays. They are my weakness. So whenever I see a good designer piece I buy it for future use. The palette provided clear space and an attractive focal point, allowing me to focus on a limited space. Runners add a different texture to the space, help bring color contrast and enhance other decorative elements. I also used kundan rangolis as fillers between the spaces to give it an ethnic feel.

Another example is the fireplace ornament, which is often the focal point of the living room in American homes. You can create a beautiful ethnic decoration by placing some handicrafts in the fireplace and directly in front of the stove.

Here I have used a combination of three different elements to create diversity with the general purpose of showcasing the various ethnic elements of India. I have used two elephant heads beautifully decorated with browbands and brass tool work. During my visit to Kerala, I fell in love with Netipattam elephant heads and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I love the authenticity they add to any space I use.

Design Decor & Disha

Finally, the most important places to decorate your home during Diwali are the pooja room and the temple. Lakshmi Puja is the most important part of the entire Diwali celebrations and is performed in the temple’s pooja room. Due to the nature of my husband’s work, my family moves every few years. So, I want to have a separate pooja room, which now has to be shared with my office.

So I used a handmade wooden temple with Rajasthani work and a suitable backdrop. This background is made of tulle fabric and decorated with peacock feathers, pearl bandhanwar and pearl rope. The ends of the tulle fabric are tied with brass elephant dias. This setup increases the pooja angles.

The door to the pooja room I share with my home office is decorated with pandavas and flowers. Try adding small details like satya stickers and mahalakshmi footprint stickers. Swastika is associated with Ganesha and Maha-Lakshmi footprints are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details greatly increase the impact of your decoration.
