As a child, Diwali preparation in our family started several weeks before the actual festival. The atmosphere in the house and in the markets of the city would be purified at the same time. People are naturally motivated to create memories by decorating your home, both inside and out. However, for those of us outside of India, it may be a little different.

Outside of India, most people do not celebrate Diwali. There is not much enthusiasm for Diwali outside our homes or markets. Nevertheless, we do our best to pass on our cultural traditions and pass them on to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories that we have.

Haveli Themed Diwali Party

Every Diwali I try to create excitement among the children with all the decorations, lights and fireworks. Now they look forward to it every year. Even if your busy schedule doesn’t allow you to implement all the ideas here, do what you can. Something is better than doing nothing. I am sharing some ideas from my home Diwali decorations that you can use in full or in parts that suit you.

Diwali is the festival of lights. The outdoor decorative lighting is under my husband’s control and he really makes it stand out, draws the attention of everyone around. The pictures don’t do the effort justice, but the overall effect of the lighting was breathtaking.

He used professional installers for the roof liner lighting, which cost about $500. He could do the rest of the lighting himself, as it can be safely handled with the usual stairs in the house. He used programmable LED rope lights for the raps and circles around the lamp post. He decided to choose non-standard LED lighting for tree trunks, house poles and large plants. Regular LED string lighting was used to create a pyramid around the lamp post.

The kids enjoyed helping with the Diwali Decorations, making it a family project. The toddler was busy managing the rope lighting spikes while the high school girl gave her ideas and handed the tools to her dad on the stairs.

Please be sure to use an appropriate GFCI protected circuit to power the light and follow electrical hazard precautions when installing the light.

In Indian tradition, the main door has a special meaning. Many Indian traditions involve decorating and performing various ceremonies at the entrance of a house or pooja room. Same goes for Diwali decorations.

During my last visit to India. These are some of the most common items I get from India every time I visit. Diya refers to an earthen lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. Today, you can buy decorative diyas at Indian grocery stores in almost every major city in the United States. They are also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit your local store.

After much research, I decided to use artificial flowers that I found on Amazon. I was pleased with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I also used some fresh flowers from my garden and local shop. The lamps were purchased from Pier1 Imports.

Diwali Decoration Ideas: 10 Creative Ways To Light Up Your Festivities

You have the option to make Rangoli with both colors and flowers. Since I have a small child, powder colors didn’t seem like a good idea. So I chose a simple design that can be quickly created in 10 to 15 minutes using a combination of natural and artificial flowers.

Have you noticed the url of Rangoli? Urli, a copper bowl for holding floating candles and flowers, adds another dimension to any festive or ethnic decor. It brings life to your static decor by making it dynamic with floating candles and flowers.

Next is the entry foyer, which is the first sight any visitor will see in your home. It creates a first impression and an expectation to see what is different. It should reflect the holiday spirit of your home while making you want to get into the holiday spirit. The foyer decor shown here uses the centerpiece of a Ganesha idol on a medallion with a table runner and surrounded by decorations consisting of brass artifacts and ornate tea light candelabra.

I used my existing bangles as tea light candle holders which are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a huge collection of bangles, so I borrowed some here to decorate the tea lights.

The Ganesha idol was gifted to us by my brother-in-law. Previously, I used copper bowls as urlis. You don’t need to buy urls or use a copper bowl to add them as a decorative piece. You can use any shallow bowl with a flat top to create the same effect.

In the above picture I used kundan rangolis to decorate the floor. You can also use a Rangoli design like the one shown below. In my case, with a walking baby, it only took a few hours.

Small decorations can be added in various places inside the house to change the overall look and feel of your home and make it more festive. For example, I spruced up my living room coffee table with candles and flowers.

You can easily see that I am a big fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decor are from this store. Whether you’re looking at the table runner or the trays and candles, all the items are from Pier1 Imports that I’ve collected over time. I keep moving them around the house to create new decor with different combinations.

I have a good collection of runners and trays. They are my weakness. So when I see a good designer piece, I tend to buy it for future use. Trays provide defined space and a focal point of attraction, so I focused on the limited space. Runners add another texture to the room and help create color contrast and further enhance other decor elements. I have also used kundan rangolis as fillers between the spaces to give it an ethnic touch.

Another example is the mantelpiece, which is usually the focal point of the living room of an American home. You can create a beautiful ethnic decor by simply placing some artifacts on the hearth of the stove and in the room directly in front of the hearth.

Here I have used a combination of three independent elements to create diversity with the common goal of showing the different ethnic elements of India. I have used two beautifully decorated elephant heads with Nettipattam in combination with brass musical instrument artefacts. During my visit to Kerala, I fell in love with the adorable Nettipatam elephant heads and couldn’t help but add them to my collection. I love the authenticity they bring to any room I use them in.

The last but most important place to decorate your home for Diwali is the pooja room and temple. Laxmi pooja is the most important part of all Diwali celebrations which is done in the pooja room of the temple. My family moves every few years due to the nature of my husband’s work. So even though I want a separate pooja room, I have to share it with the office right now.

So I used a handmade wooden temple with Rajasthani work with a matching background. This backdrop uses tulle fabric decorated with peacock feathers, pearl band hanwar and pearl strings. The ends of the tulle fabric are tied with copper elephant threads. This setting enhances the pooja angle.

The door to the pooja room that I share with my home office is also decorated with bandhanwar and flowers. Try adding small details like satiya stickers and maha-laxmi foot stickers. The swastika is associated with Ganesha and the feet of maha-Laxmi are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details go a long way in enhancing the impact of your decor.
