As a child, Diwali preparations in our family started a few weeks before the actual festival. The atmosphere in the house and in the markets of the city grows at the same time. People are naturally motivated to make memories by decorating your home both inside and out. However, for those of us who live outside India, this may be a little different.

Outside of India, Diwali is not celebrated by the majority of the population. There is not much enthusiasm for Diwali outside our homes or in the markets. However, we do our best to pass on and pass on our cultural traditions to our children. We want them to have the same childhood memories as us.

Every Diwali they try to create excitement among children with all the decorations, lights and fireworks. Now they look forward to it every year. Even if your busy schedule doesn’t allow time to implement all the ideas presented here, do what you can. Doing something is better than doing nothing. I am sharing some ideas from my home Diwali decorations that you can use in whole or in pieces that suits you.

Diwali is a festival of lights. The outdoor decorative lighting is my husband’s responsibility, and he actually turns it on to attract the attention of everyone in the neighborhood. The pictures don’t do the efforts justice, but the overall impact of the lighting was breathtaking.

He used professional installers for the ceiling lights, which cost about $500. He could do the rest of the lighting himself, since he could have reached it safely with a regular household ladder. For trips and circles around the raspberry, he used programmable LED string lights. I decided to go with non-style LED lights for tree trunks, house pillars and large plants. Regular LED string lighting was used to create the pyramid around the lamp.

Children love to help with Diwali decorations, making it a family project. The boy was busy managing the spikes for the rope lighting, while the middle schooler gave him ideas and passed the tools to his father on the ladder.

In Indian tradition, the main door has a special meaning. Many Indian traditions revolve around decorating and performing various ceremonies in the house or the entrance of the pooja hall. The same goes for Diwali decorations.

During my last visit to India. Here are some of the usual items I get from India every time I visit. Diya refers to the floor lamp used in the Indian subcontinent. These days you can buy decorative diyas in Indian shops in almost every major city in the United States. They are also available on Amazon if you don’t have time to visit the local store.

After much research, I decided to use artificial flowers that I found on Amazon. I was happy with the overall quality, feel and look of the flowers. I also used some fresh flowers from my garden and local grocery store. The lights were purchased from Pier1 Imports.

You have the option of making the rangoli with both colors and flowers. Since I have a small child, powder colors do not seem like a good idea. So I went with a simple design that can be done quickly in 10 to 15 minutes with a combination of natural and faux flowers.

Have you noticed screams before rangoli? Urli, a brass bowl to hold candles and floating flowers, adds another dimension to any festive or ethnic decor. Breathe life into your static decor by making it dynamic with candles and floating flowers.

Next is the entrance foyer, which is the first sight of any visitor to your home. Create the first impression and anticipation to see what’s next. It should convey the festive mood of your home, while instilling the desire to indulge in the festive mood. The foyer decor featured here uses a Ganesh idol as the centerpiece, which sits on a beaded medallion table runner and is surrounded by decorations consisting of brass artifacts and ornamental chandeliers.

I used my existing bracelets as tealight candelabras, which are inexpensive and a great way to add an Indian touch to your decor. I have a large collection of bracelets, so I quickly took this to decorate the tealights.

Ganesh idol was gifted to us by my brother in law. Here I use the cup of the knife as urlis. To add urlis as a decorative piece, you do not need to buy or use a bronze cup. You can use any flat shell to create the same effect.

In the above picture I have used Kundan Rangolis for floor decoration. Alternatively, you can use a rangoli design like the one shown below. In my case, with a running baby, it only took a few hours.

Inside the house, you can add small decorations in many places to change the overall look and feel of your home and make it more festive. For example, I decorated my living room table with candles and flowers.

You can easily see that I am a big fan of Pier1 Imports. Most of the items in this decor are from that store. If you are looking at the table runner, or the tables and candles, all the items are from Pier1 Imports, which I have collected over time. They continue to move around the house to create new decorations with different combinations.

I have a good collection of runners and trays. They are my weakness. So when I see a good designer piece, I tend to buy it for future use. The tablets provide a defined space and a focal point of attraction, allowing me to focus on the limited space. Runners add another texture to the room and help bring color contrast and enhance other decor elements as well. I also used Kundan Rangolis as a filler between the space to give it an ethnic touch.

Another example is the decoration of the fireplace, which is usually a focal point of the living room in an American home. You can create a beautiful ethnic decoration just by placing some artifacts on the fireplace mantle and in the room right in front of the fireplace.

Around here I used a combination of three independent elements to create variety with a common goal of showing the different ethnic elements of India. I have used two beautifully decorated elephant heads with nettipattam in combination with bronze musical instrument artefacts. I fell in love with the adorable Nettipattam elephant heads while visiting Kerala and couldn’t resist adding them to my collection. I love the authenticity they add to any room I use them in.

Sreelus Tasty Travels: Diwali Decoration Inspirations

The last but the most important place to decorate in your home on the occasion of Diwali is the pooja hall and the temple. Laxmi pooja is the most important part of the whole Diwali celebration which is done in the pooja hall in the temple. My family moves every few years due to the nature of my husband’s work. So, although I would like to have a separate pooja room, I have to share it with the office at the moment.

For this I used a wooden temple crafted with Rajasthani work with a suitable backdrop. This backdrop uses tulle fabric decorated with peacock feathers, pearl ribbon hanwar and strings of pearls. The ends of the tulle fabric were tied with milk elephant diyas. This setup increases the pooja angle.

The door to the pooja room that I share with my home office is also decorated with bandhanwar and flowers. Try adding small details like satiya stickers and Maha-Laxmi footprint stickers. The swastika is associated with Ganesha, and the footprints of Maha-Laxmi are associated with the goddess of wealth and prosperity. These small details greatly increase the impact of your decor.
