Diy Card Design Ideas – This week I dusted off my paint brushes and decided to make these special cards to say “thank you” and “congratulations”.
I had done watercolor painting before, but this was my first attempt at making watercolor cards. It’s very funny. What I love about these cards is that they are bright and colorful, easy to create, and can be completed using very few supplies (see full supply list below).

This is my first attempt at handwriting. I love the script-like scrawl look that handwriting creates – it looks both whimsical and professional at the same time. Admittedly, I am a beginner in handwriting. June and Lucy The Ultimate Guide for Beginners The Ultimate Guide to Modern Calligraphy and Hand Lettering is an invaluable resource, as it includes practice pages for upper and lower lowercase letters in a variety of hand lettering styles.

Although there’s no magic secret to how these cards are made (mainly pencil sketches, watercolors and handwritten letters), I’m sure you’ll love them. I wanted to create this post so I could share the ingredients I use and some other tricks I use to get the look above.
There are endless ideas for card designs for dads and graduates – I hope these posts inspire some new ideas and give you new techniques you can use to create your own cards, handmade with love <3
Below is a list of materials I used to make these cards. Some of the links below are affiliate links; That is if you click on it and buy it. I get a very small referral fee which helps me create free content on this blog.
Watercolor: I love Winsor and Newton paints. Their 12 Tube Student Grade Set is a great set for beginners if they want something affordable that can be a step up from a kiddie watercolor set. To create the card, any type of watercolor will work.

Watercolor Brush: Again, any paint brush will do. I used a combination of size 8 and size 10 round brushes.
Pens: A black pen can do anything, but if you want something a little more professional, I love the affordable brush pens from Tombo.
Here are the step-by-step instructions for how I created the “Honorary Degree” card. I used the same technique on parts of other cards; So be creative and apply these techniques in your own way.
Step 1 – Setup: Secure your card to a hard surface with masking tape or painter’s tape. In this card design, I will cover a 1/2 inch border around the entire card so that the masking tape is carefully placed. When the masking tape is removed after painting, this frame will be white. Once you’ve taped the card, lightly sketch your design.

Step 2 – Apply face mask: Apply face mask where you want to get fair. In this case, I used an art judgment pen and applied a liquid mask so that I completely covered the area I wanted to say “congratulations”. Wait for the mask liquid to dry completely before proceeding to the next step – usually at least 15 minutes or more to be safe.
Step 3 – Wet the card. A watercolor technique called “wet” painting was used to create a swirling colored background. To do this, first wash the entire surface of the card with water (not paint). You want to make sure that all exposed areas of the card are covered and that the card is evenly wet. Wait a minute for it to dry a little. But not at all. When you’re ready to move on to step 4, it should be cool to the touch but not too wet.
Step 4 – Add Color: Using your paint brush, apply color to the wet surface of your card. Because the surface is still wet, the colors complement each other, creating a cool, swirling look. I recommend using at least two colors for this technique. On my card I am blue; A hint of green and purple is used. Don’t try to be too specific. Part of the beauty of this technique is that the colors blend together and move in unique ways.
Step 5 – Remove the Dry Masking Fluid: Once your watercolor paint is completely dry, it’s time to remove the masking fluid. To do this, rub a corner of the liquid mask with your hands and peel it off like a tape. After removing the masking fluid, you will see a completely white surface underneath.

Step 6 – Apply Ink Art: Use your brush pen to add additional word art or embellishments. After everything is completely dry, you can also erase the remaining visible pencil marks. Be sure to apply the eraser lightly when going over the painted areas.
I hope you can use some of the techniques above to create thoughtful cards for the dads and graduates in your life – the possibilities are endless.

Fold a sheet of letter-shaped cardstock in half in any color. Simply folding the paper in half and scoring the paper with a knife is a technique you don’t want to miss. Scoring paper lets you create clean, crisp folds that give your project a professional look. To start, use a ruler and *back* knife and light along the fold line of your paper. Run it along the edge of the ruler to make it shallower. Be sure to use a cutting mat to protect your work surface and always use caution when working with sharp tools. Watch my scoring sheet video to see how easy this simple technique is.

Draw the first letter of your recipient’s name on the front of the card. Write very gently – you can erase these lines when your card is finished.
The best step. Use your floral punch to cut the bouquet out of the cardstock paper. Use any color you like. But be sure to write on cardstock paper, as it is slightly thicker than regular printer weight paper.
Insert the flower centers using a 1/8″ hole punch. Since this is a teen hole punch, I recommend investing in a 1/8″ hole punch.
