Not to say we didn’t consume – we did – but that we limit ourselves to only buying second hand (or artist made when we can!) for our clothes and home goods. And we stuck to it quite well! (Although I’m not going to lie, there have been a few dupes. Like the time we found an amazing clean oversized comforter at the thrift store, but despite looking so hard for months, we never came across a king comforter. broke down and picked up an organic cotton from Target.)

One of the wonderful and unexpected creative challenges of this endeavor was the desire to tweak and fix things we already had! I’ve recently been so inspired by the likes of Jessica Marquez and Zero Waste Danielle to re-imagine how I consume, use and reuse clothing. So here’s a little tutorial on how I’ve added a little flair to some of my long-time wardrobe favorites and maybe you can use it to spice up your piece instead of throwing it away!
A note on garment selection: really stretchy fabrics can be tricky to sew, but it’s not impossible with a little patience! If you’re a beginner and still finding your feet with embroidery, you might want to stay away from things like t-shirts and stick with more stable fabrics like denim!
Start by setting up your plan. I used about 5 packs of my daisy bark + stick transfers to make the densely packed daisies on each sleeve. I know this is a lot, both in terms of cost, material and time, so of course, feel free to simplify and keep things manageable for yourself!
Peel off the back of the transfer and place the sticky side down on the front of the fabric. Cut the offsets to fit together and create the look of an overlapping design without actually folding the paper and adding extra layers of stitching.

For me, it works best if I cut out the design before I peel + stick, but I encourage you to work however you’re most comfortable!
Use black pearl cotton (I prefer size 8) and a backstitch to finish the project following the printed lines of the design. Use the embroidery hoop to stabilize the area you are working on.
I pointed my needle and tied a button on one end, leaving the other end open. Some people will tell you not to use knots – that it’s not the right, proper way to sew, and while that may be true, I don’t subscribe to that way of thinking. Also, when I only have a few inches of thread left, I tie another knot on the back of the fabric to hold the seam in place. It makes the inside of the sleeve look a little messy, but I don’t mind!
You may notice that the not-yet-stitched overlays move slightly when you place the fabric in the embroidery hoop.

Don’t worry! Just glue the design back where it belongs and sew it up! For this reason, I found it easiest to put on just a few flowers at a time, rather than putting on the whole sleeve at once.
After you are done sewing, wash the bark + stick transfer paper under warm water. If you need to, you can use your finger/nail to scrape off any bits of paper stuck right around your seams, but it should dissolve completely with the water!
You may notice that the fabric and seams are a little stiff after they are completely dry. This stiffness will lessen with time and use. I run hand-stitched clothes through the washing machine – sometimes on gentle, but mostly on ‘normal’ with the rest of my laundry. So far I haven’t noticed any damage caused by washing. Embroidered elements of clothing and home textiles have been around for as long as needles (literally thousands of years), so don’t be afraid to wear and use your stitched products!
*If you already have designs you want to use (some of my digital patterns for example) and are looking for a blank peel + stick stabilizer, I like the 8.5 x 11 Water Soluble Stabilizer Sheets from Pellon. It’s not the only brand or option out there, but it’s what I use.
