Ever since she saw The Little Mermaid, it’s been all about “Lil’ Merman” (as Zoey affectionately calls the Little Mermaid). Something just clicked with her and the movie, so we decided a mermaid birthday party under the sea was the perfect way to celebrate her two years! Which is especially fun for me because I also had a little mermaid birthday. Above is the party logo that I designed to add to the party details.

For Zoey’s annual birthday dress-up photo shoot, we bought a little mermaid swimsuit and I made a flower for her hair. We photographed this at my parents’ pool.
I chose light blue foil envelopes for the envelopes. I lined the inside of the envelopes with mermaid wrapping paper. I printed the bubbles on the front of the envelope and then attached stickers I made for a cute whimsical touch.
I used my Silhouette Portrait cutter to create a three-piece shell-shaped invitation similar to my son’s space invitation. For the front of the envelope, I printed and cut out the shell shape from pearlescent light purple cardstock.
The centerpiece is an invitation with watercolor mermaid tails and a watercolor font. The third piece is an image of Zoey the mermaid, also cut into a shell shape. The three pieces are held together with a paper fastener that I painted purple.

Brent made Zoe’s cake. It was a small personal size vanilla cake with ombre frosting displayed on a small white scalloped cake stand.
We added purple chocolate shells that we made using our mini shell baking molds. They were very easy to use and turned out really well.
For the top of the cake, I made a paper seashell cake topper and added one of Zoey’s The Little Mermaid toys as well. When it was time to sing Happy Birthday, we turned the little mermaid into two tall blue candles.
We transformed the coffee bar into a mermaid dessert table with this sparkly sequin tablecloth that resembles a mermaid’s tail. In the background was a balloon curtain filled with pastel purple balloons and blue/green balloons.
Mermaid Cake Decorating At Home Made Easy
The bright blue-green coral pieces were a DIY project. I decorated the table with various shells and The Little Mermaid toys.
I made these adorable seashell cookies by piping purple frosting between two blue wafers and adding a white candy in the middle to represent a pearl.
All of our treats were displayed on three tiered stands on these beautiful ceramic purple combs. I like it very much! They are of very good quality.
We made our own Tie Cake Pops! I am really proud of them. They were really easy to make in our cake tins and they were absolutely delicious.

Another dessert we made were these little cheesecake cups in cute plastic cups that we topped with whipped cream, chocolate mermaid tails and mermaid sprinkles. They were a hit at the party!
I thought I was getting purple seashell mugs, but some wires got crossed and I was sent these blue and clear seashell mugs instead. They still worked fine. I filled them with chocolate kisses and added a thank you note I made that matched the decorations. These were nice gifts for guests to take home.
The kids’ favorite part of the dish was the kid-friendly snack tray filled with ocean-themed snacks and treats served by Flounder.
I tried to balance the ratio of fruit to candy, but I believe all the candy came first. Ha

I set up a small table where guests could get a temporary sea tattoo or make their own mermaid bracelet with a set of mermaid beads and a set of letter beads.
I had so much fun creating a photo booth where guests could come and take pictures with Sebastian the crab.
Brent made the background of the large cardboard case. Clear bubbles hanging from the ceiling gave a really cool undersea effect.
Zoey had so much fun at her party! He liked to pretend he was under the sea. We enjoyed watching him sing, dance and run around.

We ended the mermaid party with a yard full of bubbles thanks to the most epic and craziest bubble machine ever. Plus lots of swimming and splashing in the giant rainbow pool!

So my daughters are still 4 months away, but I like to start early and plan their party. The girls are exactly 2 years and 8 days old, so this year we are celebrating their birthdays together, as they are turning 2 and 4.
Last year the girls had separate parties because we felt like the first birthday deserved its moment to shine. Hailey had a donut themed third birthday and Belle had a Beauty and the Beast theme.
I’ve been tossing around a few different ideas this year as well as the idea of combining two different themes for both girls. It can combine 2 different princesses or a fantasy theme and combine unicorns and fairies.
The Ultimate Magical Mermaid Under The Sea Birthday Party
One of the ideas I’ve been tossing around is a mermaid theme. I scoured the internet for various mermaid themed items and DIY projects that could fit the theme. I don’t know if this is a topic we’ll end up sticking with, but I definitely wanted to share all of these amazing ideas with you!
First up are the invitations. Since I love designing invitations, I designed some myself. They feature a cute little mermaid and some underwater life. I usually like photo invitations, but I also made an invitation without a photo. You can check out my mermaid kit in my Etsy shop, which includes a number of personalized mermaid-themed options. Each item in the set is also available separately in store.
Next is food. It’s fun to serve food (if possible) that actually fits the theme of the party. I was able to find a variety of food and dessert ideas to match the mermaid mania.
These Mermaid Fish Stick Sandwiches come from Mom Foodie. I love the blue and purple mauve swirl on top. It looks so cool. I don’t know if my little ones will be excited about fish sticks, but calling them sea dogs might help!
Mermaid Birthday Party
This Moms and Munchkins post has lots of great ideas for both food and treats. I love the idea that with the sandwiches, the kids cut them out with fish cookie cutters. You get a themed meal without the drama.
Treatment is probably the biggest category here, and it’s no surprise. I think a party needs a treat, right?! Some of these invitations can even be used as party favors! With so many options, you can choose according to your time and budget.
These Mermaid Rice Krispie Treats from Finding Zest are adorable! I love the little mermaid tail on the front. I also love the semi-DIY option of using Kellog’s Rice Krispie Treats so you can achieve a DIY look with less work.
Another option is to give your rice krispie treats a mermaid tail shape. This idea comes from Mommy Made That and is also super cute if done a little harder. You can do one or the other, or combine both ideas for a fun treat display or party.

Cutefetti has some delicious mermaid blondes for you. They are based on white cake mix, so you don’t have to spend time making this treat.
Although not specifically designed for a mermaid party, a swirl of pastel frosting on top of this cupcake can make it fit the theme. You can choose any frosting color you like. I would go for purple and teal.
These mermaid cookies from Savvy Mama Lifestyle are absolutely adorable. I feel bad that she only has boys after coming up with this cute idea. Maybe she could have a Peter Pan party and still use them!
This is one.
