Art doesn’t have to be complex to be beautiful. Sometimes drawing a simple pattern or repeating patterns can create amazing art. I like to tell people… if you draw a circle you are an artist. Some of my favorite patterns to draw have a simple circle or point.

Patterns don’t always have to be complicated designs. It’s easy to transform basic shapes and lines into exquisite textures and patterns. One of my favorite things to do is take a shape and then repeat it over and over in different colors across the page. If I want to mix it up, I change the shape sizes on top of the pattern.

Below is an example of using a heart to make a pattern. I left a small white accent on the top left of each heart to give it more of a bubble look. A repeating pattern in different colors is one of my favorite sketch doodles.

What I love is that drawing something so simple takes all the stress out of drawing. If you want to alleviate any anxiety, try a repeating pattern design using circles, dots or basic shapes.

For this doodle I drew small circles using bright colors. I joined the circles in curved lines to give it a rainbow look at the end.

Line patterns can be created freehand or using a ruler. I prefer freehand because it gives the painting a more natural look. However, if you want to create geometric patterns, using a ruler can be useful for those intricate designs.

The lines don’t always have to be straight. Try curved lines in the basic rainbow shape. Or expand your creativity and try using different design elements to create interesting horizontal line patterns.

One way to get better at drawing patterns is to create a grid in your sketchbook with lots of examples of patterns.

Here are some of my favorite go to patterns. For all of these I usually use pens to draw the patterns, but you can also try other media. These patterns would work well to fill an entire page or just fill smaller areas of a layout.

For the bubble pattern, start by creating small circles and larger circles. To give the effect of something rounded, I left a small white light at the top of each circle.

Choosing a single zentangle pattern is a beautiful way to draw a repeating pattern to expand your antire sketchbook.

Try experimenting with different circle sizes to create a unique texture design. If you want to reduce the time required for this doodle, consider only drawing on a page or partial page.

This pattern consists of petal-shaped raindrops. Change the direction of the raindrops as you add them. There isn’t necessarily a way to draw each drop, just fill in the blanks as you go.

A fun way to experiment with simple lines and patterns is to create a continuous drawing. Mix by changing colors. You can also try curved and rounded lines.

Triangles are great shapes for creating pattern designs. For a bolder look, fill the triangles with color. You can also add patterns on top of the triangles for an added design element.

Raindrops are great for blowing up like patterns. They also look like petals and are perfect for touching up the floral pattern.

If you want things a little simpler, the spiral drawing is for you. To make the spirals look superimposed, make a little so that you can see the whole design and make half spirals to fill the space in between.

The Pattern Page ✨

Mandala patterns are more complex than other patterns, but with a little practice they can be quite simple.

The traditional mandala is usually a circular design, but now you will often see mandala designs used in different ways, such as filling different shapes and patterns.

One of my favorite ways to use mandala designs is to create a shape or fill a shape with mandala lines.

If you want to expand your pattern designs, try mixing different patterns. You can also use patterns and shapes to create images in your design.

Markers and fine-tipped markers are great to have handy when drawing patterns. Broad pens will allow for bolder and brighter designs, while fine point pens are best for intricate patterns and fine details.

While you can use a pattern sheet, I prefer to keep my patterns in a sketchbook so I can have them all in one place and look back at previous patterns for inspiration.

Think outside the box when it comes to the surface you draw your patterns on. It doesn’t always have to be paper!

If you’re working on a surface other than paper, such as rocks, wood chips, or ceramics, paint pens are a great choice for drawing patterns. You can also use pens to paint on paper, just be careful not to smudge the paint as it takes a bit longer to dry than regular markers.

Don’t overthink things. Sit down with a piece of paper and a pen or pencil and start drawing. If you can’t think of a pattern to draw, choose a single shape to draw over and over again across the page. You can even create a pattern grid or cheat sheet to see when you can’t think of what to draw.

Put down the pencil and pick up the pen instead. Drawing patterns is just about relaxing and letting the art be. Don’t worry about making mistakes or doing something wrong. There is no right or wrong way to draw patterns.
