One of the most popular elements of creating a mom’s dream nursery is creating a stunning accent wall! There are many ways to do this, including decorative wallpaper, wooden boats, photo frames, and many others. For my son’s nursery, I wanted to use a beautiful, patterned wallpaper for the back of the house. However, that plan was quickly scrapped when I decided the bubblegum orange peel on my wall wouldn’t work for wallpaper. I instead decided to paint a traditional geometric pattern directly on the wall to accent the room.
Easy Wall Paint Design Ideas With Tape
As with other methods, painting your walls is beneficial because (1) it’s cheaper than buying expensive wallpaper, (2) it’s easier to paint over when you’re reading to draw a pattern, whereas wallpaper takes a process that can, and (3) you’re doing it yourself. You can choose the colors and designs that suit you!
How To Build A Renter-friendly Wood Accent Wall
The first step is to paint your accent wall a base color of your choice. If you already have a color you like, you can move on to the next step!
In this project, our main wall color for the room was Behr Ultra White Metal in an eggshell finish. To brighten up the accent wall a bit, we used Behr Ultra Silent White (which, despite the name, is a gray color).
To paint a wall, use some frog tape to cover areas around your wall to avoid mistakes. We recommend using 1.88″ delicate surface tape because it is wider (making it easier to avoid mistakes) and will not remove existing paint. Then paint the wall with a foam roller.
If you don’t create your design on the go, this will be the most stressful but important part of the entire project. If you have graphic design experience, the best way to create your design is to draw your wall to scale in a program like Adobe Illustrator and create the design to exact dimensions. It will be much easier when you draw the design on your actual wall as you will have all the shapes and lengths ready. You can ensure that all parts of the design are symmetrical, at right angles and parallel.
Painters Tape Design
If you don’t have graphic design experience, you can draw your design on a sheet of paper with measurements (1 inch = 1 foot) and a ruler to get your angles.
In this design, I kept things simple for myself by only using 45 degree angles and 1.5″ wide lines. When painting my walls, I use a level to make sure all my lines are at right angles and a long ruler to trace the lines.
Once drawn, you will need to outline your design with frog tape, making sure to place the tape outside the lines so they are covered with paint. Otherwise, you’ll have to do a lot of wiping/cleaning!
If you design in intersecting lines, the best way to paint is in layers. This way, you can easily apply frog tape one line at a time without worrying about bleeding and mistakes.

Apply tape to the first part of your design, making sure to press the tape down to go around your lines. It is better to use your finger and push along the grooves of the wall texture. If you don’t apply enough pressure and your tape has a lot of air bubbles or gaps, you will bleed more under the tape.
When you’re ready to paint, thin your first coat of paint, which will help the frog tape adhere to the wall while minimizing bleeding. Depending on the color difference between your wall color and the strip color, you may need 2-3 coats. Once you’ve finished the last coat, immediately remove the tape and let the paint dry completely before moving on to the next step.
To create intersecting lines, apply another layer of frog tape to the second set of lines. In areas where the lines will split, gently sand the edges of the lines with a fine grit block to remove any hard edges caused by the duct tape. That way, once you fill in your second line, it will look like a smooth pattern.
Once you’ve sanded and taped, paint the next lines using the same process as step 3.

Since my design has intersecting lines in three different directions, I had to complete the painting in three stages. Although it takes a bit longer and requires a bit of patience, doing this keeps my lines nice and clean without the need for complicated printing.
No matter how hard you try to prevent bleeding, if your walls are textured, they will always happen. Unless you’re a paint pro (which I’m not), they’re somewhat impossible. After all your paint is completely dry, use a foam brush and some of your base color to clean up the edges of the lines where they bleed. If you’re using your frog tape correctly, most of your lines should be crisp and this step shouldn’t be as annoying as it sounds! I’ve made some progress on my bathroom walls, and I’d like to show you the full design. I said I wanted something geometric and/or linear and I got both with this design. It’s all done with painter’s tape, so it’s a time-consuming process. Thank goodness I’m doing this in a tiny bathroom! Here is my progress so far…
Now remember it’s painter’s tape. Dark blue and white have a striking effect, but the finished wall will have less contrast.
I started trying to make this design I saw on HGTV.com. I spent about three hours taping all the painters on the pattern before I realized their instructions were off and the pattern didn’t work as the instructions were written. Needless to say, I wasn’t kidding.
Paint Your Wall With A Chevron / Herringbone Pattern
So I had to start over and create my own design. I started by marking a 16-inch rectangle on my wall using a pencil, framer’s square, and level.
Naturally, I enhanced the lines in the photo editing software because my pencil marks don’t show up in the pictures. 🙂
Then using the squares as a guide, I created larger squares on the diagonal using painter’s tape to mark the diagonals going in alternate directions.
I created a series of concentric rectangles using painter’s tape. I just used painter’s tape as a spacer between each row of tape.

And then I cut the corners using a straight edge metal and blade. Depending on where you stack and cut the tape, you can create different looks. Initially, I started with this pattern of concentric squares with a small Greek key supporting a square spiral in the center.
Again, that middle part is not a square that takes a few pieces of tape to form a spiral, and effectively cuts the pieces to form a spiral.
It still wasn’t the shape I wanted, so I tweaked a bit more. I added some extensions, cut some in other areas and ended up with a big square spiral.
That’s what I decided to go with at the time, so I went to other squares, changing the direction of each line.

And my final tweak is to add another extension to the outer rectangle so that it’s not a continuous square, but instead creates a perfect square spiral.
Once I finally worked out the design details, the rest of the squares went pretty quickly. It’s still a slow process, but I like a slow and boring project sometimes. These types of projects are perfect for making good podcasts and getting lost in an amazing story.
You’ll notice I didn’t go all the way to the floor, and that’s because I plan to do solid wainscoting underneath. It wasn’t really a design decision I made based on the look I wanted, but a need-based decision. Because of the type of toilet required in this bathroom (ie, the water pipe must go up to the ceiling instead of down to the floor) there is a large element of such a toilet that sits on the back of the wall, and there. The access panel has to be cut out so you can work when needed. So the only way I can think of to disguise the entry panel is wainscoting.
