Farmhouse Decor Ideas Dining Room – We recently remodeled our dining room and today I’m sharing all the design details.

Another room renovation in the books! I shared our design plans a few weeks ago and in just a few weekends we were able to completely transform the space into a modern farmhouse dining room. We haven’t really touched the place since we moved in and it feels so good to have it feel like a new cozy retreat.

Our original place consisted of a broken faux fireplace mantle, a farmhouse table and not much else. My goal was to make it look a little more sophisticated, more complete and a lot more comfortable. This post describes what we did to renovate this room and tips and tricks on how you can achieve it in your dining room.

The modern farmhouse is a marriage of all the things you love about the farmhouse style mixed with the sophistication of modern design. It’s cozy, comfortable, rustic without the neutral elements you see in traditional farmhouse style. It is more sophisticated, but still warm and inviting.

What I love about the modern farmhouse style is that it is easy, comfortable and allows you to easily mix in other design style elements. Whether it’s a traditional rug or a piece of architectural storage, you can combine them with ease.

Regardless of what design style you prefer, I always recommend mixing different design styles. The combination of design elements is what makes a beautiful design.

The main part of the dining room is where you eat! That was the first place I started. One tip I have is not to get a traditional matching set. Your dining room will look more “designed” if your table and chairs are not the same.

I started with the first table.  I picked up the Farmhouse Leona Extension Dining Table from World Market. This is a beautiful pine table with a light gray wax finish. I love the overall design and it has two breadboard extensions that are perfect for presentation. It also has a hefty price tag. It looks and feels more expensive than it is.

Once I set the front table, the chairs were washed. Finding the right dining room chairs can be very difficult, especially when shopping online. I sat down in some very uncomfortable dining room chairs. There’s nothing worse than ordering furniture and it turning out to be useless.

So the first thing I looked for was comfort and the next thing was over. I’m usually all about light and airy interiors, but this time I knew I wanted to add some dark elements to warm up the space. I have found the perfect chairs that meet both of these requirements and I am obsessed.

We have custom wood dining chairs from the Magnolia series at Target. They are very spacious, well made for the price and very comfortable. I love the barrel look of the chairs and they add the perfect modern farmhouse touch to our space.

There is a carpet in front. Area rugs are a must for every space. They ground the room and can set the tone for the entire space. You might think, but wouldn’t it get messy in a dining room with food, spills, etc. especially if you have kids. This is where washable rugs come in. Washable area rugs allow you to get all the benefits of adding an area rug to your space without the stress of ruining it. You can just throw it in the wash!

For our dining room I went with the Rosman Washable area rug from Boutique Rugs. This was my chance to add some color to the space. It was a little out of my comfort zone, but I love the depth and personality it adds.

A tip when buying any rug, especially a washable rug, is to get a felt rug pad. It adds comfort, protects your floor and extends the life of the carpet. Washable rugs are thinner than traditional rugs and they add an extra layer under your feet. This is the felt mat block I used.

A statement chandelier is a must on the dining table. I wanted to add another black element to the space to keep the design consistent and this was the perfect opportunity. I went with a classic chandelier-style chandelier from a more expensive retailer. It is almost identical and a fraction of the price.

The next important part is storage. If you have the space, I recommend a large sideboard on your large open wall.  It can store extra linens and dishes and gives you the opportunity to add statement art or a mirror above. Unfortunately, we don’t have room for a large sideboard, so I went with a small cabinet. It still gives us some storage space and a small space to create a stylized vignette.

If you have a small dining room and don’t have enough room for a sideboard, one option is to add a faux rug.

In our house, our main window wall ends up being too close to the dining table to add a sideboard. To add interest and some character to the space, we added an antique faux fireplace mantel. This was the biggest project for our dining room renovation.

The original bag was white and raw. I wanted the space to look a little more refined, so we scrapped years of paint and painted it Benjamin Moore Classic Gray to match the walls. I like how it turned out.

Below are some other design elements that can instantly breathe new life into your space and what we did to complete our transformation.

Color is a very inexpensive way to completely change your room. I always recommend giving your room a fresh coat when you need a change. We went with Benjamin Morris Classic Green for the top half of our dining room. It’s a neutral light warm gray and it really brightens up the room.

Adding some type of wall detail is also a great idea for a dining room and adds character as well as visual interest. This could be a feature wall such as a ship’s lip or floor-to-ceiling boards and battens. Another option is a wainscoting detail. Wainscoting is a panel or trim detail applied to the lower half or three-quarters of a wall. It can be beadboard, board and batten, panels, or just a complete detail. We painted the bedboard Pure White by Gladden.

Window treatments are another design element that makes a big impact. We only had cheap blinds in this room, although I knew the curtains would be replaceable. I honestly think they made the biggest impact in our dining room and I can’t believe I waited so long to add them.

We made bamboo Roman shades. It adds texture and anchors to the wood table. Then we added the white curtain, high and wide. It makes the space complete and inviting. Consider prioritizing window treatments for each room in your home.

Finishing touches are just as important as larger pieces of furniture. They complete the room. Some ways to incorporate this is by adding a centerpiece/flower arrangement in the middle of your table. Add art to your wall or a mirror to your storage piece. You can see examples of this in our modern farmhouse dining room.

Another unexpected element I had in this room was a table lamp. I’ve never had a table lamp in my dining room, but I have to say it warms up the space. I have a green ceramic lamp on the shelf and it looks great at dinner time. It creates a perfect mood in the space.
