60 Top Father’s Day Quotes For Dad
Have you ever wondered how Father’s Day came about? When do we start celebrating it? Who started this annual tradition? Before making a card for Father’s Day, let’s find out how this holiday started!
We all owe it to a young woman who one day decided to establish a special day to honor her father. In May 1909, there was a Mother’s Day sermon at a church in Spokane, Washington. Sonora Smart Dodd was one of the people who went to church that day. His mother died giving birth to his younger brother, so his father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran, took it upon himself to raise him and his five siblings. This gave Sonora an idea for Father’s Day. He wanted to celebrate and honor parents on his father’s birthday, June 5. Sonora wrote a request for this holiday to be recognized in her hometown. However, it has been delayed until the third Sunday in June. Spokane’s mayor and pastor needed more time to plan the festivities and prepare the sermon.
The first Father’s Day was officially celebrated in Spokane on June 19, 1910. Before the advent of Father’s Day cards, fathers gave red roses to their daughters during church services. Those present also showed respect to the parents by sticking a rose: red for the living and white for the dead. Â
Father’s Day was not recognized by law at the time. The road to Father’s Day becoming a national holiday was not without controversy. According to Wikipedia, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to legalize it after attending and speaking at a 1916 Father’s Day event in Spokane. However, fearing that the vacation would be sold out, Congress rejected his request. Several other United States presidents recognized and supported the celebration, but it was not declared a holiday. That was until 1972, when then-President Richard Nixon finally made the holiday permanent by signing a public law.
