What Should I Do With My “split Level” Primary Door?
If only a door is keeping you from truly dividing the space, beaded curtains are one of the simplest solutions, as seen in this Brooklyn apartment. Do this. There was always some kid stuff going around and I finally had to accept that it was a given.
The overall layout is the same as the house in Minnesota, except we don’t have a door to the garage between the living and dining areas. We reused IKEA wall cabinets, accessories, lighting, side tables and the console behind the sofa, but everything else here is new. When the original part moved downstairs, we needed a new joint. When I bought an orange rug for the bedroom we needed a new rug. We needed a huge curtain rod to cover the 10 feet of windows and white curtains because our old curtains were too thick.
The wall units served us well in both houses. The kids almost destroyed it, but you couldn’t tell unless you were right up there looking down on the end. All in all, it worked wonders and made our boring box residence look nicer without actually costing an inch. I decided to put my precious pole light between the two “rooms” as a sort of divider that puts it front and center rather than putting the baby in the corner.
We don’t really have a lot of wall space here as most of the room is wall units, windows and rails. To share a small part of the wall with the kitchen, I chose to hang some pictures of the boys.

The sectional we custom made at Walter E Smithe is a soft denim colored fabric and it fits us perfectly. Here are the pillow + couch fabric swatches I compared to our rug when I made my decision. Don’t forget the paper airplanes! I love the vintage look of pillow fabric, but this print just wasn’t for me. The fabric of the sofa is a different blue than the rug, but it is great in larger sizes.
