Hand Print Design Art Ideas – We’ve had beautiful weather this March, so my kids and I have spring fever.  I couldn’t resist bringing in spring by making a colorful butterfly out of my little boy’s footprints and fingerprints.

All you need for this fun little piece of art is colored construction paper, your choice of paint colors, an artist paint brush, and some cute little feet and toes! My 3 year old loves the color green, so she chose to make a butterfly with green wings.  I just painted the bottoms of her feet green with an artist paint brush.  I found it less messy to paint one leg, print a footprint, and then wash that leg before printing the next leg.  After the legs were printed, my son dipped his index finger into the paint to create all the dots on the body and tip of the antenna.  He made the head using his thumbprint and ran his finger over the paper to make out the antennae.

After her butterfly is dry I will give her a colored ultra fine point Sharpie marker to draw on her face.  You can also add extra detail by sprinkling some glitter or putting extra fingerprints on the wings. I had some black fabric paint from my previous craft so I thought it would be fun to make a handprint shirt. You can find fabric paint in the craft section of any craft store like Walmart or Joanne’s. This was my first attempt at handprinting on a shirt, so I bought a solid color shirt from the dollar store because I didn’t want to ruin a good shirt if I messed up.

I used a paint brush to paint my son’s hands and then pressed them onto the shirt. I’ve also read that you can spray paint on a paper plate and press it in with your hands. Although I haven’t tried it this way, I’m guessing it won’t clean the edges of the handprint. In my experience, if you put too much paint between the fingers and around the edges, it tends to smudge where you really don’t want it to go. After the handprints dried a bit, I added more to the design. When I pushed down his left hand, I accidentally pointed one of his fingers at his shirt. I made little stars in different places to cover the OOPS. I also added her name, date (or maybe age), and a cute phrase: Mom’s little helper. I like this phrase because it always helps me with the housework. 🙂
