They love to entertain, and the steep slope of their Des Moines backyard means their deck is the only usable outdoor area to do so. Although in decent condition, the size and layout of the deck made it restrictive and uninspiring. We took cues from more modern parts of the interior and designed a stunning outdoor space with plenty of space for entertaining and more.

BEFORE: The deck is bulky and too small for entertaining. Furthermore, it is not oriented to take advantage of the mature trees that surround the property and to provide peaceful privacy.

A sloping backyard provides the perfect scenario for a terraced deck. The homeowners wanted to keep the deck high off the ground to minimize nuisance insects that tend to congregate lower to the ground. The main part of the deck is being extended and we will be integrating a soft patio extension with built in seating around a gas fire pit. Tall planters add greenery and help refocus the space away from the garage door and toward the wooded backyard. Installing large format pavers over the existing slab and repeating them for the walkway will add a nice connection to the landscaping. A modern railing consisting of square metal posts with horizontal cables will be topped with a teak rail. Instead of attaching the posts to the wooden deck, we chose a more modern approach and will mount them on the vertical plinth. Narrow posts are planned to provide soft evening lighting all around. Our customers are in love with this new plan and so are we.

THE MATERIALS: The dark hickory composite deck will be complemented by a limestone fire bowl, oiled bronze metal railings with cable rails, and sage green cushions on the benches. We have specified small blinds to add elements of lighting and extend party hours.

With all the extra footings, the framing is well under way. We were able to save most of the original structure and extend the joists to expand the main footprint. Landscaping fabric and rock below the deck are in place to minimize erosion on the steep slope and to discourage unwanted vegetation. The lower deck is also taking shape and customers are starting to visualize their new space.

IN PROGRESS: Jenna Frideres, one of Silent River’s newest tradespeople, plans the joists to ensure the new wood decking goes smoothly. This image shows how the new deck layout takes advantage of the lovely surrounding woodlands.

Once the framing is done, we start on the built ins and then the real transformation begins. So far, this map update has gone well and the homeowners are excited to get their first party invitations out!

The most common mistake in deck design is simply attaching a deck to fit an existing scoreboard or replacing an exact copy of an old deck. This approach will limit your options and stifle the creative process. Home builders often add capital letters and as an afterthought. It may not even be properly attached.

The front door will serve as the primary access to your deck. The location of your door will determine your original height.

Low (less than 30 inches above height) do not require guard rails. They look relatively squat and massive. The soil under a low deck will be hidden but can become a home for small animals or insects. Consider ventilation, as the more a low deck can “breathe”, the more resistant it will be to mold and mildew.

Higher will seem lighter, like a floating platform. Guardrails will be required and long stairs are usually necessary. High provides the opportunity to show the view of the surrounding landscape. The space below the deck is a good place for storage or a sheltered area for rainy days.

Free-standing Deck Joist Layout

What kind of view do you have to work with – a breathtaking snow-capped mountain peak or an ugly water tower? Spend some time in the room at different times of the day to get an idea of the type of daylight you can expect. Do you have any trees that provide dappled shade? If not, you can include a shadow function. Is your garden flat or sloping? Do you have a pool, terrace, hot tub or garden?

A good design will highlight the website’s advantages, while a bad design will draw attention to its shortcomings. The shape of your party can affect the size and placement of your deck. Landscaping, small trees, vents and AC units can be adjusted as needed. Sometimes large trees can also be framed around your deck design.

Most people want to design their own deck, but often don’t know how to start. Here’s how we suggest you get started. Try to explore the whole. Don’t get hung up on details. Use your imagination. If you’re still saying things like, “I want a deck like our last house,” then you’re not trying hard enough. Don’t be afraid to think big and bold. Perhaps you’ll enjoy owning your own private patio oasis, an elegant porch, or other outdoor space. This approach usually leads to better results than choosing a copy of your neighbor’s deck.

You probably won’t be able to fully realize all of these visions, but in the end it will be worth it if you can blend some of them into the final design. Now let’s decide what you really need to achieve the card of your dreams. Need a way to access the backyard from an elevated patio door? Do you need a good place to store your grill? Do you need a space for outdoor dining, relaxation and entertainment? Acknowledging and negotiating your needs and wants will be a critical component of expressing your design intent.

Consider how foot traffic will flow over your deck. Make sure your furniture and barbecue arrangements do not interfere with movement. Your stairs and house doors should be easy to locate and freely accessible from any part of your deck.

Guardrails will usually define the perimeter higher. A short railing or benches can help direct traffic and maintain visibility for a low deck where guard rails are not required. The inner space of the deck must contain passages for movement. Changing the direction of the wood deck can be a useful technique for separating spaces. Pointing diagonal wooden decking in a certain direction is a subtle signal to guide people’s path of movement.

Your deck steps will anchor your deck to the yard and act as a primary access point. Measure the height of your deck and use our stair calculator to determine the number
