How To Design A Simple Robot – Let’s build a robot today! If you don’t have Sketch software, you can try a free thirty-day trial. We will use a variety of simple shapes to create our illustration and this tutorial is a great way to practice the application.

When you open Sketch, you’ll be taken to the home page to create a new document. You can also find other courses and resources if you like.

You should now have a blank canvas. You can create an artboard by pressing the A key on your keyboard or by clicking Insert > Artboard and clicking and dragging. In the right sidebar you can specify the exact size. Let’s make the artboard 800px x 800px.

We will build the body of the robot with a series of rounded and straight rectangles. To start at the head, press the U key (or Insert > Shape > Rounded Rectangle) and click and drag to create the shape. My dimensions are 390px x 275px, with a 38px round border. Coloring the gray robot is easy — we’ll use the default fill (#D8D8D8) and border colors (#979797) for most of the images. We want the robot to be surrounded by thick lines so that it pops off the page, so make the border 8px thick. (The thickness setting is next to the color.)

Now we want to fill the rest of the body with other rectangles. (Remember, the keyboard shortcuts are Rounded Rectangle (U key), Regular Rectangle (R key), or go to Insert > Shape >…) Here are my dimensions (image below):

Quick tip: The trick is to position the edge of each shape so that they overlap. This is easy to do if you zoom in on the image! (Ctrl+)

Start by creating an 80px x 80px circle (O key or Insert > Shape > Oval) with a fill of #D8D8D8 and a border of #979797 and a thickness of 8px. To make a perfect circle, hold down the Shift key while dragging the shape on the artboard.

To make a circle, make sure you select the shape and go to the top menu Layer > Path > Scissors. Cut the two bottom edges to make a circle. Press esc to exit the tool. Now double click on the shape to get the direct selection tool. This will automatically set up a vector tool that you can use to connect the broken path down. Now you have a circle!

Add this shape to the feet (slightly off center) and the top of the head (center). To make the rest of the antenna, create a 27px x 79px rectangle (R key) with the same padding as the border, and a 64px x 27px rounded rectangle with a 14px corner radius. Click Edit > Send Back if they are in front of the semicircle.

Select all the shapes created up to this point and group them (Cmd + G). In the left sidebar, double-click the group and rename the layer

Let’s start with the eyes. Make a 79px x 79px circle and place it as the right eye. Press Cmd + D to make a copy directly over that. While holding Shift + Alt, shrink the circle to about 38px x 38px. This keyboard shortcut will keep the center of the circle centered to match our original shape!

Now select both circles and press Cmd + D again. Drag the copied shape to the left. As you drag, hold down the Shift key — this will keep it aligned with the original. Once you’re happy with the shape, adjust the thickness of the border on the shapes to make the eyes look a little bulging, like they’re counting something crazy.

The mouth will be a rounded rectangle, 233px x 87px, 9px thickness, 26px corner radius. The ‘tongue’ is a 150px x 18px rectangle with a fill color of #979797. With the shape selected, click Modify from the top menu (this is the same as double-clicking the shape). Select the top two corners (use the Shift key) and set an area of about 31px. This will only round the top corners.

The arms use the same technique as the tongue to round the corners. Make a 38px x 154px rectangle, with a border thickness of 9px. Double-click (or click Change) and select in the upper left corner. Make the corner radius 37px.

To make the hands, create a circle (key O) measuring 78px x 78px, with a thickness of 8px. Using the same technique as before, create a circle (Layer > Path > Scissors). Make another circle that measures 32px x 32px, and is 8px thick. Match the center of the small circle with the bottom of the semicircle. Select both shapes and click Delete from the top menu. The resulting shape will have a claw-like essence. Handmade!

Now add a series of horizontal vertical lines to the arm using the L key (or Insert > Shape > Line), with a border thickness of 7px.

Select all the shapes that make up the arm and group them (Cmd + G). Name the layer

. Now duplicate the group (Cmd + D) > right click > transform > flip horizontally. You made the right arm! Position accordingly and rename this layer

Let’s start with the physical buttons. Make three small circles (O key) of 15px x 15px and three rounded rectangles (U key) of 113px x 11px with a corner radius of 6px. Feel free to play with the gray fill of each element. Mine are variations of #ABABAB, #B9B9B9, #9B9B9B and #B6B6B6.

If you want to straighten or distribute these features evenly, these features are at the top of the right sidebar.

Now we move on to the last stage: thinking. They are not very precise, so feel free to play with the size.

Start with the body. Select the shape and duplicate it (Cmd + D). Clear the border and change the attachment to #BEBEBE for easy viewing and orientation. Make the shape smaller to fill about a third of the body on the right side. Enter vertical selection mode (double-click or rotate) and click somewhere on the left edge to add an anchor point. Select the point you just created and move it to the center. Play with the corner radius on the panel edges and handles to get the best display you like. In the end, mine looks like this:

To add some reflection to the legs, create two 12px x 56px rectangles without a border and fill them with #BEBEBE.

For feet, hands and face, do the same actions as for the body. Duplicate the shape, change the fill to #BEBEBE, no border, vertical selection, add an anchor point on the left side and drag it to the center. (See pictures for reference).

Quick Tip: Focus on one side only because you can also change the shape for an easy symmetry hack! (Remember: Cmd + D, Transform > Flip Horizontal)

Click on the artboard text to select the entire artboard (or click directly on the left sidebar menu), copy its contents (Cmd + C) and paste (Cmd + V). A new artboard should appear on the right.

You have reached the end of the course!!! I hope you have fun and learn something new.

Did I not cover something enough? Would you like to share your design? What did you think? I would love to hear from you! Comment below or give 👏!

An explorer who wants to connect with the world. I am currently a product designer in New York learning as much as I can! Hello, in this tutorial I will show you how to design a simple cartoon style robot and my workflow to edit the image and create a simple animation loop using some useful studio functions.

First, as always, gather references and inspiration, try to look at more things than the work of other artists. Research real-life robots and machines, how they work. Get inspiration from nature, animals, insects, etc. If you’re looking for inspiring work on robots, I recommend the work of DaCosta Bayley, creator of MarchOfRobots.

Is it a war robot? assistant? friendly or scary? Big or small, etc. Try to imagine how you behave in your world. The more details you describe before drawing, the easier it will be to make design choices.

Start by exploring shapes and silhouettes. Focus on the overall feel of the character rather than the details. For this step, I prefer to use a large texture brush to help me focus on the shapes.

I base the designs on simple geometric shapes. As a general rule, sharp angles are good for menacing robots, large square-shaped robots look strong and stable, while oval robots are more rigid.
