How To Design And Sew A Dress

How To Design And Sew A Dress – Today is the second part of my interview with Teri, one of the members of the sewing school. Listen as we discuss the possibilities for sewing and rhinestones her first ball gown.

Before enrolling in the Sew Like A Pro™ course, Teri was a seamstress and had never worked with stretch fabric or tried on a dance costume!

How To Design And Sew A Dress

Teri’s difficulty is that life “gets in the way” of her sewing and she has to take a six-month break on this dress. That’s a really long time from start to finish – especially when you’ve never sewn a ball gown before!

…I make the school available to all members 24/7 and provide a convenient checklist for them to follow at times like this when they need to get away from the sewing machine for weeks or months. Therefore, they can work on clothes when it suits their schedule.

On the left is an original drawing of Teri and her first lace pinned up dress. Post this on our members only Facebook group at the beginning of the sewing process.

The picture on the right is the dress we see in today’s video. The lace location has changed a lot from the original sketch.

It’s normal to change the design as you go to create the best line on your body (or your client’s body). This is the joy – and the challenge – of making a one-of-a-kind dress.

Teri’s vision of how the finished garment should look is not the option we see above. So, today, we are talking about alternative designs and how to inspire them to finish the clothes.

Whether you relax when making your dress (or a customer’s dress), you may need to reevaluate the design after the first fitting and make changes that will help improve the shape and size of the woman’s body.

1.) Teri bought the lace applique from ChrisAnne Clover in England.  (If you’re in Canada, I recommend you check out their sister store, Crystal Clover.)

Because the lace is professionally dyed, the color is pure and saturated, and therefore beautiful enough to stand alone without rhinestones. (On the other hand, when I have to dye lace, the color is spotty and it’s better to cover it with stones.)

2.) Teri decided to sew lace by hand using a quilting technique called “trapunto”. The lace on this dress has a beautiful 3-D look and is way too beautiful to be covered up. Covered in rhinestones!

We discussed the rhinestones bodice in a similar way to her first dance (see photo on the left).

Teri’s piece is mostly pale blue, but she added a nice cobalt blue panel on the left side. Combine this unique look with asymmetrical lace in two colors and the dress really stands out.

At first glance, I think this is a smooth dress because the skirts don’t have a lot of volume that standard skirts usually have. When I asked Teri about her choice of pieces, she said,

Diy Multi Wrap Dress

“I want something elegant. I don’t want something that is ‘in style.’ I want to feel good when I walk on the floor.

I don’t like to follow groups; I like being a pioneer, and that makes you feel good in your outfit.

And when you learn how to do that with your program, you know what is right and what is wrong with you, so when we create something, we show our character, not the character of others (that is not the color or the size of your bra)”

We have a lot of fun commenting on bra color and size, but the lady knows what she means! It is difficult to find clothes that fit all your visual requirements and fit.

… If you know how to sew, why not learn to make your own dance, country or ice skating costumes?

She and I were discussing how to remove the lace from the bodice on the arms to create a nice width and diagonal when she is in the dance position.

Similarly, as Teri’s trainers and pro-am partners are tall with a wide topline, we also wanted to create an illusion of height.

Teri decided to sew on a bra instead of a cup. He found one at the grocery store. It fits well in the chest, but too tight in the back…. Gotta love bra extensions!

Simplicity 8874 has been that style for me lately. If you are a beginner and want to learn how to sew a knitted maxi dress, I have a treat for you today. Continue reading.

When I first saw Simplicity 8874, I was drawn to the square neckline and flared skirt. I love a good maxi skirt, and when I find a pattern that’s versatile and easy to sew, it’s a win-win! I can easily sew this dress up in about an hour. However, because I’m a slow knitter and like to take my time to add extra finishing touches to even the simplest patterns, I usually spend at least a few days making a dress. I cut a size 12 and did not adjust the pattern.

This maxi dress model comes with four different views. But the most exciting thing is how you can make it look different based on fabric choices and bodice combinations and sleeve options. I love the dress so much that I have made it four times.

It is very comfortable and can be dressed up or down. I have worn all four sets many times. Meaning: LOL! I took them to church, to the grocery store, around the house, and out to dinner. Another sewing sister gave me the idea to make a winter sign. So, I might pull out the sweater knit and make a long sleeve shirt and put on boots, a belt and a winter hat. hmm…

For this dress, I used a square neck bodice, long skirt, and tie sleeves. I styled it with my high heel animal print and my DIY clutch purse. Shoes are for sitting and walking only. I can’t wear pointe shoes anymore because it hurts now. There is a link to the Sew Along video for the purse at the end of this post.

Design (and Make!) Your Own Clothes

If you are harassed by working with knitting, the best way to get it. And keep going until you are comfortable with the fabric. If you missed it last week, I made a Pattern Review video for this dress, sharing some knits that would work well for the dress, so check that out at the end of this post. I also share the tutorials I use to help achieve beautiful hems and topstitch with knitting. Click the link at the end of this post to see a pattern review.

It’s no secret that I’m a Baby Lock girl! I love my Baby Lock machine and for this sewing machine I used three. Yes, I used my Soprano, Vibrant, and Euphoria to sew this simple dress. Does this project really need three machines? Not really!

But let me tell you how rewarding it is to use three machines, all dedicated to a specific task, to make these beautiful clothes. I can easily sew a dress with my Live Serger, except for the facing and the stitching. It will be a very fast project.

However, I want to show that this method can be done on a regular sewing machine, while giving you a taste of the life of using a serger. And because I love my new Euphoria Coverstitch machine, there’s now a way I’ll ever live without it again. Meaning: LOL!

You don’t need three machines to make your dress, but it was like a beautiful dream to use all my buttons to sew a dress. The finished product speaks for itself.

If you want to try it, then join me as I show you how to sew this dress. There is a new video on my YouTube channel where I walk you through the steps of dressing, with lots of details. I recommend looking at the model review first, though, to get it all
