In previous posts, I mentioned that Windows 10 + JPLAY FEMTO provides better sound quality (SQ) compared to tested Linux based players. In this post, I’ll share some of the steps required to set up Windows 10 to play audio without using third-party tools like Audiophile Optimizer and Fidelizer.
The phrase “audio computer” here refers to DIY music servers/streamers based on desktop motherboards in various form factors, including Intel NUCs. While the Intel NUC is a good starting point for an audio PC, better SQ performance is achieved with the right desktop motherboards that use power supplies for audio. One of the main differences between Windows and Linux for the USB DAC interface is that each DAC manufacturer provides driver(s) for Windows, while Linux uses a common USB Audio interface, usually via ALSA. Using specific drivers for a particular USB DAC is one of the reasons Win 10 SQ plays better.
Advanced DIY music streamers can add a USB regen and PCIe NIC. Not all are guaranteed to work under Linux, but with Windows 10, if the drivers are provided by the manufacturer. The same goes for motherboards.

A USB drive is required to create a Windows 10 bootable disk, and another SSD is required to install Windows. Let’s go through the steps.
Under “Create Windows 10 installation media,” expand “Using a tool to create installation media (USB drive, DVD, or ISO file).” The ISO can be downloaded and burned to a USB drive for later use as a bootable disc.
Make sure you have a free SSD installed on your computer to install Windows 10. The contents of the SSD will be deleted. I recommend using a small SSD for O/S and keeping music files on other separate SSDs. I usually choose Windows 10 Pro. Total O/S is not more than 40 GB. An SSD size of 80-120GB is sufficient for an O/S drive, but SSDs smaller than 250GB can be hard to come by these days.
Make sure that the user account/name is set when installing Windows 10. This will be necessary because we set the password in the last step.

Although Windows 10 tries to install all necessary drivers automatically, drivers for PCIe cards such as motherboards, USB DAC, USB regen, and network require manual installation. From the Start menu, type and select Device Manager. Below is a screenshot.
In the example above, using the Renesas/NEC µPD720201 host controller, the USB Regen card driver has not yet been installed. After installing the driver from the manufacturer’s website, the device manager displays the following.
In general, if none of the device categories are expanded as shown below, it means that all drivers are installed correctly.
It is important to install all the drivers that come with the motherboard and this should be done first. Some drivers require you to restart Windows 10 after installation. The next two screenshots show the drivers under the systems attached to the motherboard after all the drivers have been installed.

USB audio device drivers have their own control panel. If you open the USB Audio control panel, you can confirm a successful USB Audio connection as shown below.
If the USB audio connection is not good, there is only a Status tab showing “Device not connected”. This may be because the USB cable is not installed, the USB DAC is not enabled, or the USB Audio driver is faulty. Sometimes turning the DAC off and on can fix the detection problem if all the other steps are done correctly.
An ISO image downloaded from Microsoft’s website is usually several months old. Run Windows Update until you see “Updated” before proceeding to the next steps. A few restarts are required. Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, this may take a long time.

The default installation of Windows 10 includes many programs that run in the background. These programs are not required to play audio and should be disabled. I chose to disable Turbo Boost and Intel’s SpeedStep in the BIOS to ensure Windows 10 runs at 100% CPU speed without Turbo Boost. You may have other preferences. If Intel SpeedStep is enabled in the BIOS, the minimum and maximum processor speed must be set in Windows. We’ll get to that later.
In the Start menu, type “Power” and select “Choose a power plan.” The following screen appears. Select “High performance”.
