How To Make A Bay Window Look Nice – Bay windows are a luxury that should always be maximized in your home. Comprised of three outward-facing windows (a central window and two corner windows on each side), this architectural treasure is worth admiring every day. Whether as a backdrop for your kitchen table, a pet spot, or a reading nook in your living room, bay windows add drama without much effort. Enjoy stunning views from the windows while natural light floods the home. These corner niches create special moments in your space, no matter where they are built.
“Bay windows add visual interest to a space. Instead of a traditional window, the three-dimensional nature of a bay window breaks up the wall,” says interior designer Hilary Matt.
How To Make A Bay Window Look Nice
Bay windows may be the secret to bringing freshness to the outdoors. Because bay windows project outward, they actually increase the square footage of your home and create opportunities for creativity. You’ll feel better too. Angela Hamwee, founder of McKenzie & Company, adds: “Bay windows provide plenty of natural light, which improves your mood and reduces the need for additional artificial lighting.”
Bay Window Blinds & Window Treatments
Bay windows are great for sunbathing (think of them as mini sunrooms), but they’re too dreamy to ignore in your decorating plan. We asked designers to share some inspirational ideas for bay windows you can add to your home without breaking the bank. Reimagine your favorite spot with additional storage space, thoughtful seating, and a sun lounge area.
Bay windows can present unique design challenges, but decorating them is easy once you find a solution that works for you. The best place to start, Matt says, is to decide how you’ll use your space and how your windows will fit into that use. “This is a breakfast nook, will it fit on the table?” she asks. “In that case, a bay window is perfect for securing a table around the built-in seating.”
Hamvee suggests making your windows shine so they stand out as focal points. There should be nothing blocking your view. “Bay windows are often seen as an opportunity to design custom furniture, such as built-in dining benches or window chairs. Surrounding décor and furniture do not compete with each other and create a seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. It needs to be minimal and neutral,” says Hamvey.
Our experts agree that curtains cause a lot of problems when decorating bay windows. Choosing Roman or Cafe shades allows you to customize them for the perfect fit and control the amount of light they let in. “If you have a bay window at the front of your home, you may want to consider cafe shades that only partially cover the window to allow natural light but still provide privacy,” says Hamwee.
