In this article, we’ll walk you through creating a logo on Canva (spoiler: it’s super easy!).

Before we dive in, here’s a quick run-through for those of you who don’t know what Canva is.

How To Create A Two-letter Logo

Canva is a very user-friendly ‘drag and drop’ online design tool that allows anyone to create stunning designs without the need for any special design knowledge or experience.

Canva is a freemium tool so you can use most of it for free and download an unlimited amount of free designs.

However, there are some features that you can only use if you pay for a Canva Pro subscription (or try their 30-day free trial).

When it comes to creating a logo on Canva, the easiest option is to start with a template.

How To Make A Logo For Free With Canva (2023)

Canva currently has around 1,400 logo templates that you can use as a starting point for your logo design.

You have a few options when it comes to searching for templates from the Canva homepage, you can search for ‘logo’ in the search bar (or make the search more specific such as ‘beauty logo’):

This will show you a set of related logo templates through which you can easily browse to find the template you like:

Doing so will take you directly to the Canva editor, where you can either browse or search for a specific location and select a logo template from the ‘Templates’ tab on the left:

One thing to note is that if you only have a free Canva account, the above methods of finding and selecting a logo template mean that you will only be able to download logos with maximum dimensions of 500px x 500px.

With Canva Pro you can easily change the dimensions of your design but if you plan to stick with Canva Free and want a logo design with larger dimensions you will need to:

From Canva’s homepage, click the ‘Create a Design’ button in the top right, click Custom Size and put in the dimensions you want your logo to be (for example 2000px x 2000px):

After clicking ‘Create New Design’ you will be brought to the editor where you can search and find the logo template of your choice. Your logo design can be downloaded (for free) in the custom dimensions of your choice:

One thing to keep in mind is that not all templates on Canva are completely free (don’t worry, there are still many that are free!).

Some logo templates contain Canva Pro design elements, and can only be used if you have a Canva Pro subscription.

You can tell which templates are completely free to use by hovering over a template thumbnail, and you know it’s 100% free to use if a ‘free’ tag appears on the template thumbnail:

If you hover over a logo template and don’t see the ‘Free’ tag, you know it has Canva Pro elements.

You can also add templates to your ‘Favorites’ folder so you can browse logo template options, save your favorites, and later return to your Favorites folder to decide which one you want. want to use

To add a template to your Favorites folder all you have to do is hover over a template thumbnail, click the three dots and then select ‘Add to Favorites’:

To go to your ‘Favorites’ folder go to the ‘Folders’ tab from the left menu and go to your ‘Favorites’ folder:

Design elements are very easy to resize and reposition. All you need to do is select the element(s) you want to modify and click and drag them to move them to the canvas.

As you move an element around Canva will show you how it connects to other elements in the design so it’s easy to make sure everything lines up in the right place:

When it comes to resizing, all you need to do is click on the element you want to resize and click and drag your cursor to make it bigger or smaller:

To see the customization options for a particular design element you just need to click on the element you want to change, and the customization options will appear on the top bar of the editor.

From the toolbar you can change the text font, size, color and perform general text modifications such as making it bold or italic, underline and upper or lower case.

Note: Some fonts are only for Canva Pro users, so you won’t be able to use them if you only have a free Canva account.

There are also some additional text effects you can use. For example, you can blur text or place a drop shadow with one click:

To add more text to the design, simply go to ‘Text’ on the left-hand menu of the editor and select the text element to add to the canvas:

If you want to delete a text element from your design, simply select the element and press Delete or click the bin icon at the top right of the toolbar.

Canva gives you a lot of features when it comes to the graphic elements of your logo design.

When you select a graphic element you will typically have the following options in the toolbar – the ability to change color to crop or flip the graphic:

You can also change or add additional graphics to your design by going to the ‘Elements’ tab and finding the graphics that match what you’re looking for.

Deleting elements is similar to deleting text, select what you want to delete and press the delete button or click the bin icon.

Another thing to note with graphic elements on Canva is that, like fonts, they are not available to all free users.

If you see a crown symbol on a graphic element, you know it’s only for Canva Pro users. So if you don’t plan to upgrade you can use free elements for your logo design:

A useful feature that simplifies the process of creating your logo on Canva is the ‘grouping’ feature.

You can group elements together which makes it easy to move them around or resize them while making sure they all stay consistent and scale.

To group the elements select the ones you want to group together (you can hold Shift and click the elements to select them at the same time) and then click ‘Group’ in the toolbar:

To change the transparency of an element simply select it and then click the transparency icon at the top right to adjust it to your liking:

Finally, a great feature of Canva is that you can easily convert your logo design into an animated logo.

To add animation, click on the background or gray area of your logo design in the editor and you’ll see an option to ‘animate’ your design in the toolbar:

As you can see from the image there are 5 free animation options, and if you have a Canva Pro account you can access 5 animations as well.

With a free Canva account, your options are quite limited when it comes to downloading your logo design.

As you can see from the image above, Canva Pro users have a few options available such as the option to download your design with a transparent background.

Ideally, for a logo design, you’ll have a version with a transparent background so you can easily add different designs and platforms.

By far the easiest option would be to get Canva Pro, but for those of you who don’t want to invest in Canva Pro, we’ll show you how to get a version of your logo design with a transparent background for free. !

Upload your logo design, select the ‘Magic Wand’ button, click Logo Background and then click ‘Remove Pixels’ from the right-hand menu:

The background should be removed, but you may have to repeat that process several times to get all the parts of the background.

Click ‘Export Image’ on the next screen, and then you can download your logo design with a transparent background:
