But this is a big mistake, because as of this writing, Pinterest reports 433 million monthly active users on its site. The majority of these users are women who make purchasing decisions in their homes, and many of these women spend a lot of time on the platform, rather than blinking for short periods of time, as we see on Instagram and Facebook. Not to mention the fact that there are so many people on Pinterest who are into interior design and decorating, I mean, your target market could be there!!

With all these ideas, today I want to share with you 5 ways in which I use Pinterest in my personal interior design business, in these cases giving you some ideas to apply in your own business.

The most practical way to use Pinterest as part of your business is to ensure that on your website there is a Pinterest “PIN” button embedded in all your images, for example. Save images to your design portfolio or to your blog images.

This means that when people browse your site, they will be able to pin your photo and add any image they want to their personal Pinterest board.

When they do, it appears in their own Pinterest feed and then encourages others to add your image to their board or even click View and finish on your site. You will be able to quickly see how your image will start to spread on Pinterest and how more people will start to see your work as a result of this.

Adding a ‘Pin’ button to your website is usually easy, but sometimes it requires adding a bit of code to the back of your website. A quick Google search on how to do it for your specific type of site should let you know how to do it. I’m not a remote technician, but I can easily figure out how to do it on my own web platform (hosted on SquareSpace).

I highly recommend you try it because it is one of the best ways to get people to promote your image and work without doing anything.

Another way to use Pinterest is to make sure that when you publish a new blog post or other content on your site, you need to make sure that the blog post has a “worthy” image that you can share yourself on Pinterest.

You’ll see at the top of this blog post that I’ve included an image that’s perfect for sharing on Pinterest. Once I publish this blog post, I will use the “PIN” button I embedded on my website to share the image to my personal Pinterest account. I have a specific board where I keep all the images from my new blog posts (see below for more information on this).

This image will appear on my Pinterest board and when someone saves or clicks on the image, they will be taken to the actual blog post. This is a method that drives a lot of traffic to my site from Pinterest because the image I share has the title of the blog post, making it stand out in the Pinterest dashboard when people scroll. People get a lot of value from the content they find when they click on a needle and visit my blog and then save this needle to one of their boards, which then encourages others to view/save needles as well.

On Pinterest, you can create boards to organize your pins and the images you’re saving. These boards can be displayed publicly (anyone can see them) or confidentially (only you or the person you invited can see them).

I use these methods in many ways. First, I’m saving you a pin of ideas for your home. It gives me a place (that’s private to me) where I can collect ideas for new projects.

Sometimes I also invite clients to the secret tip so they can see the scene as it is being put together, or sometimes I ask them to add their own pins so I can start to get a sense of their personal beauty. Below you can see some examples of secret Pinterest boards from my personal Pinterest account.

Another way I use Pinterest boards is to showcase the beauty of my designs and capture my favorite images and design ideas, which I also enjoy sharing openly. These public forums are an extension of my brand and aesthetic that I publish on other social media platforms and on my website.

As you will see below, I have my board divided into different rooms and when I see my favorite pins I will save them to my board. If you click on the image below you will be taken to my Pinterest profile where you can see all of my boards and what I have saved to them.

From time to time I like to try to go through my board and delete pins that are outdated or no longer represent my design aesthetic. I haven’t taken this step in a while, but it’s something I need to come back and do soon!

When you save a pin and create your board, remember that Pinterest is an extension of your brand and therefore needs to match your aesthetic on other platforms and your website. You’ll see from my newsletter that I have a consistent style and aesthetic throughout the image I’m shooting. This helps people understand the type of design work I do and what they can expect (in terms of style/design) if they want to work with me.

Make sure your resume is up-to-date with information about who you are and what your company does, and includes links to your site. Next, make sure you have a dashboard that is relevant to your business. For example, if you work as an interior designer but simply take a photo of a model of food or fitpo, you give people a mixed message.

Try to be consistent with your branding, and if you want to have a food or fitness image, maybe consider having these elements on the keyboard so they don’t blend with your branding and image.

On my page I also have two specific boards where I keep my design projects and my latest blog posts. I put it at the top of my home page so these are the first boards people see when they visit my profile.

At the moment I also include all my digital products on my portfolio board, but when I have time I will transform these products into your ‘products’ board.

Having these boards means that my newsletter visitors can click directly on those boards and any of the images on them will take them directly to my site. It’s these little tricks that help me drive a lot of traffic to my site from Pinterest.
