How To Sew Dress Pattern – I’m still looking in my closet for a dress to wear and I find that I hate everything. All of them!! I’ve somewhat solved this problem with my two versions of the Inari Tee Dress with fall sewing plans, but I’m still not satisfied. I want to be able to open my closet, see a variety of options and want to put them on right away.
There are many requirements for the perfect everyday outfit. First, the clothes should fit my body. Last year I got rid of a lot of clothes that no longer fit me like they used to (I’ve lost quite a bit of weight over the past few years, which means a lot of my hand-me-downs have outgrown). Second, I need to feel comfortable in it. It shouldn’t be too flashy or too obvious and it should play well with other things in my closet.

I started looking for another outfit a few months ago and so far it’s going great. First up was the Inari Tee Dress, a cocoon-style pullover with short sleeves. It is really easy to make and very easy to wear. Check out my versions here and here.
The Mesa Dress is my new favorite dress from Seamwork magazine. I made a banana and perfected the cut (seriously guys don’t skip this step, you won’t regret it). Now I have a pattern that I absolutely love. I shared a Mesa version last week and will have another later this week.
I made the alder shirt version and I love it, but I need to complete the sizing (FBA and extend). This is a classic design and I am so happy to see it become a part of my wardrobe.
I haven’t tried this one yet but I like the clean simple design. Such a classic! It’s also the type of dress that allows for a great meal, but still looks good with tucked in sleeves.

This pattern has been on my sewing list for a while. I’ve loved all of her patterns that I’ve tried and I’m sure this one will be no different.
And now to the others! There are many great designs and I want to make them all.1. Adelaide by Seamwork (wearing muslin here), 2. Scout Tee by Grainline Studio (stretched into a dress!) 3. Simplicity 1366 (stretched into a dress again!), 4. Vogue V9075 ( version of my dress here), 5 Butterick B6182, 6. Tunic Gallery by Oliver & S, 7. Phoebe by Coletteand 8. Bettine by Tilly & the Buttons. My long-term goal is to learn to design clothes that I love. Many sewing patterns are very expensive, and since I don’t really need (or read) the instructions and mostly just transfer them, I feel like I’m paying for all the stuff I won’t end up using. If I could make my own set of basic patterns, I would also avoid many of the assembly problems that come with commercial patterns. So I decided to do some sewing design and see what I could do!
I found this book very helpful for making my first quilts: W. Aldrich: Cutting Metric Patterns for Women’s Clothing.
This book includes instructions on how to draw all the basic blocks for women and how to enlarge and cut them. I have no pattern cutting experience, but I still managed to figure out the instructions which were mostly basic geometry.

I have drawn some patterns with paper and pencil before but they are difficult to edit, save and share. Most pattern design programs are really expensive, but luckily I heard of two that were completely free. yes. FREE OF CHARGE!
These two were originally a single project that split into two different branches because the developers had different ideas. The first is called Seamly2D and the second is called Valentina. The two are still practically identical, so if you learn how to use one, you’ll know how to use the other. It looks like Valentina has a few other useful tools that Seamly doesn’t. Last time I checked, I was able to open all my Seamly projects with Valentina, but I can’t open Valentina files with Seamly.
If you want to start with either program, I recommend this tutorial that works for both. Without it
I couldn’t figure out how to even begin to make the pattern, but after finishing the pant pattern with the tutorial, I knew all the basics and could figure out the rest.
Simple Sew Utility Dress
I started to create a pattern for a basic body for women. It ended like this:
Then I added the waist shaping, but this is where my little tricks started. I drew the front seams to meet at the bust point:
The center of the arm. This meant that I had to turn the top thread over the front bodice and then insert the threads into the princess seams:
I then printed out my design at size 36 and made a toilet out of the hole. (I could have used my measurements, but I wanted to see the size first.) The first thing I noticed was the neck was too narrow. I had to cut it off immediately. Otherwise, the cut was surprisingly good. The sleeves were a bit wide for the dress, but were easily fixed in the final version. There were also some minor fit issues, which I was able to fix by lowering the handle cover a bit and turning the handle.

I haven’t made the dress yet. Instead of drawing something that could hide or not fit the way I wanted, after converting the design to fabric I decided to hang it on my mannequin.
I only put on half the skirt and then I did a lot of work. Here’s what it ended up looking like:
No, it’s not perfectly symmetrical, but I just wanted to use half of it for my pattern. At this point the shell is still slightly twisted, resulting in a few wrinkles.
I was satisfied with the overall width of the skirt and so I was finally able to start cutting the wool…

Have you ever designed clothes for yourself or others? I hope this post inspires you, if not designing clothes, then adding some little tweaks of your own to your existing patterns! The Kila Tank has proven to be such a workhorse in my wardrobe that I wanted a way to wear the design. Today I’m going to show you how I adapted parts of the Kila Tank pattern to make a Midi Curved Kila Kila and a Basic Mini Kila Shirt!
To decide how much length to add to the Kila dress, I measured from the hem of the top of the tank (about halfway up my hips) to the bottom of my leg. I decided that adding 22″ to the Kila Tank would make the perfect midi dress and that 10″ would work for a petite.
I also wanted a curved hem for the midi dress, so after measuring 22 inches from the center of both the front and back, I cut 4″ along the side seams.

Then, using these modified patterns, I cut out the fabric and sewed the dress exactly according to the instructions.
I do have one tip for sewing a curved hem on such a thick fabric. I use Heat N Bond Soft Stretch to stretch before sewing and am careful not to stretch the fabric at all during the hemming process. The result is a linear element that is easy to sew.
Thicker fabrics like these tend to stretch more when sewn. I recommend a few things to help you succeed:
If your fabric stretches a bit after sewing, throw it in a hot wash and dry cycle. It will probably return to its original state. Ever since I shared the free crochet pattern with you a few months ago, I’ve been wanting to see how easy it would be to turn it into a swing skirt pattern. Turns out it’s simple!
Clara Dress Pattern
I love the simplicity of the swing dress – nothing tight or tight, just a soft material that pairs beautifully with a muffin top. Definitely my go-to outfit (and perfect for holidays where you can eat whatever you want and not worry about your waist getting too tight!).
I made a mid-length dress, but you can go knee length or longer if you want! All you have to do is add some length
