Sometimes even a 282 square foot kitchen can feel cramped. For Laurie MacNamara and Bill Hendrickson, who share a Craftsman-style home in Alexandria, VA, with their 16-year-old daughter, the “hook” created by their kitchen sink holds them back. “We were able to use about two-thirds of the kitchen space,” recalls Laurie. “Especially with the corner that sinks in there – we’re constantly bumping into each other.”

By scraping the angled sink, pushing out the wall and removing the J-shaped corner, Lindsay Boudreaux, the lead designer at Shotgun Double Interior Design, created a cabinet that ran straight along the back wall. A 4-by-7-foot island construction with 4-foot clearance from the refrigerator/range/sink wall provides a spacious food preparation surface and an opening to the side door and pantry wall.
The former kitchen’s spacious cabinets were difficult to organize, so Boudreaux reimagined that wall with a 3-level pantry next to a coffee station on one side and a pull-down/storage area on the other. Moving the oven away from the island was key to improving the flow in the 242-square-foot space. So Kate Adams, design/architecture specialist at Case Architects & Remodelers, created a feature wall for the new range top and moved the refrigerator against the wall with a double oven. She inserted a deep drawer under the top shelf for pots and pans, with a shelf to store the family’s ample supply of water and spices on either side.
The new rectangular island, at nearly 10 square feet in size, offers more than 12 linear feet of cut-and-dice space on both sides. It was laid to create a path between it and the wider summit – key to avoiding traffic jams. “With a 4-foot-wide walkway, there is now enough room for two people to work back-to-back,” Adams said.

To open things up, Stephen Gordon, president of InSite Builders & Remodeling, moved the rear garage into the dining area and added sliding French doors where there are three windows. He eliminated the barrel of the cabinet that holds the refrigerator along with the peaked hem in the kitchen, and moved the powder room door to where the refrigerator is.
