Ideas For Decorating Living Room Walls
The place didn’t have much to offer when we moved in. It was just a small square box with no letters. The advantages were the large windows, which let in a lot of light, and the wooden floors.

The downsides were the old baseboard heaters and chandeliers that we walked by every time we passed the room.
This 10×10 room is next to our small entrance, at the front of the house. We are sure that the previous and only owners used it as their dining area. We don’t need another dining area, so for now it will serve as a living room/den.
The first project I worked on in this room was getting rid of the chandelier and both baseboard heaters. We don’t need the heaters and they are just ugly, so I removed them and fixed all the holes and damaged walls.
I also removed the old thermostat and filled that hole, as well as all the other holes and nails.

The next step was to caulk all the trim and windows (an old problem in the house) and then moved on to priming the trim.
At this point in the project I was ready to paint the walls. However, first I applied two coats of glossy white paint to the ceiling. What a difference it made!
The trim also received two coats of the same color I was using on the rest of the house, mixed with Behr Polar Bear BM Advance.
Finally it was time to paint the walls. I have used this house to experiment with different sheens, ie soft white paint colors with a matte sheen. The walls in this house have a lot of flaws, so I was hoping that the matte gloss would minimize them.

The paint color I chose for this room was BM White Dove in Matte. I have used White Dove before for trimming and always liked it so I used it again.
I can’t believe how much this soft white color brightened up the room. It was painted a medium gray color that was… well. However, the soft white really made a big difference.

The molding in this room, the picture frame molding was going to be exact. It was my first time doing this kind of project but it was easy to do. Working out the calculations for spacing the boxes turned out to be the hardest part of the whole project.
4 Need-to-know Tips For Decorating A Small Space
At first I was going to do the whole room, then it was 2 walls. In the end I was left with 1 wall, the sofa wall. I think it was the right decision because it’s the first thing you see when you walk into the room. I love what he did for this place.
In my original plan for the living room I wanted some kind of metal door for the large entry way between the kitchen and the living room. After doing some research and comparing prices, I decided to look for a cheaper option. I decided on sliding steel and glass doors.
I wanted something a little more modern than the typical barn door. When I saw the glass and steel doors, I knew they would work well with the feel I was going into in this room.
I love that they add a little character to the room but still let a lot of light into our kitchen.
Living Room Wall Decor Ideas
As I said, it’s a small room with one long wall, so it was the only place to put the couch. Since this is the only wall I can hang any kind of art on, I decided to create a gallery wall with vintage art.
Remember, I’m trying to do it as cheaply as I can and this is the best place. I’ve collected art from flea markets and estate sales over the years, so I pulled out some of my favorites. I also found some public domain prints online that I printed and framed in vintage frames.
I love buying my house and decorating the rooms with things I already have. Besides being cheap, it’s a great way to use things you love in different ways.
The sectional has moved with us from Florida to two homes in Illinois and now North Carolina. It’s a little big for this room, but it’s a piece we love and can’t justify buying it new if we don’t use it every day.

A chair in one corner of the room and an armoire in the other are favorite pieces that have been used in many of our homes.
Since I had already furnished the main living room with furniture and decorations, this allowed me to purchase steel and glass doors and a few small decorative pieces.
As I get older, I find myself more drawn to decorating by finding thrift and estate sales. Not only can it be an affordable option for decorating (usually), I also love that I can find unique, well-made pieces that fit my design style.
I already mentioned the secondhand art gallery, but I also found a beautiful vintage wooden coffee table that fits this small space perfectly. And it was only $30.

If you’ve been around Chatfield Court for any length of time, you know I’m not a curtain girl. I’m a window dressing minimalist and, if I’m honest, I don’t want to clean curtains.
The plan for this room was to re-hang the woven curtains after we moved in.
But after I hung them back and put my room back together, something seemed wrong. Like something is missing.
I gave it a few weeks to see if it was just a room change, but the window wall still looked unfinished. Deep down I knew I needed to hang the curtains. The curtain I chose is two sheets, from Liz Linen Drape Plain.

I think my instincts were right. Although they are simple, curtains add softness and finish to this aspect of the room.
I am happy with the results of this room. It’s really my style and I’ve been tucking myself in to escape the craziness of Reno and sitting on the couch to enjoy the peaceful feeling while I’m here.

But a white living room doesn’t have to look minimalist: the right accents can give it an eclectic design, bohemian style, or farmhouse feel.
