Ideas For Empty Wall Space In Living Room – Need to fill in awkward living room spaces? Whether you’re dealing with unused space, bare walls, or empty room corners, this is a common interior design challenge. Today I’m going to share 15 ways to fill empty spaces and design your living space comfortably and well. Let’s begin!
Before we get into ideas for filling the living room, let’s talk about your focal point. A focal point (in interior design) is where your eye catches your eye when you enter a room. For many, the centerpiece of the living room will be a fireplace or media console, often with artwork or a TV hanging on it.
Ideas For Empty Wall Space In Living Room
I like to decide on a focal point when designing a room for two reasons. First, you can spend more of your budget on this part of the room because it will get the most attention. Second, you want to make sure that other elements in the room (like furniture or wall decor) don’t compete with the focal point.

For example, let’s say an over-the-top art fireplace hangs over your focal point. I wouldn’t use another large piece of art in the room because it would take away from the focus.

Now that you’ve decided on your focal point, I’m going to share a bunch of ideas to help you fill in the blanks in your room.
A great hack that interior designers use! The way you hang your curtains can make low ceilings appear higher.

If you have low ceilings: hang your curtains high and wide to give the illusion of high ceilings. I usually hang my curtain rod 2-4 inches below the ceiling (or crown molding if available) and at least 8 inches from each side of the window. This trick makes your ceiling even higher!
If you have high ceilings: On the other hand, if you have vaulted or high ceilings and need to frame your room, curtains can also help. Hang your curtain rod at least 4 inches above the window (I usually go a little higher) and at least 8 inches on each side of the window. In this case, curtains will help add structure to a room with high ceilings to make it more comfortable.

For large spaces in the living room, consider adding a console table or sideboard. These parts serve several purposes. First, a large piece of furniture will visually frame the space. Second, you get extra space for a blanket, book or DVD. You can place the furniture against the wall or behind the sofa.
How To Fill Empty Space And Awkward Corners In A Living Room
Don’t pile it up: If you already have a media console in your center, I wouldn’t choose a large sideboard for another wall. Instead, choose a console table that fills the space without feeling too heavy.
For example, I used a small console table to fill the gaps between our living room windows and the back door. Now that little wall feels more intentional than awkward.

If you have a large space that needs structure and comfort, a simple solution is to add an area rug. Rugs can help create separate spaces or zones in an outdoor space or larger room. As a result, your room will feel more comfortable and intentional.

If you have a wide room, you may have awkward gaps on either side of your focal point. For example, this corner of the room has always been difficult for me! After trying a few options, I added a curved floor mirror (32″ wide x 71″) to fill the void left by my TV and media console.
On the other hand, wall mirrors are a great way to fill in empty space on a console table or sideboard! I like to choose curved or round glass for a softer look on counters, sofas and artwork.
A simple solution for a room that feels cramped is to add an accent chair or two. Typically, your sofa or sectional will take center stage and accent chairs should be placed off to the side.

We’ve experimented with several living room layouts over the years! Here’s a look with a sectional and two accent chairs.
We ended up replacing our unit with a white bed. Additionally, our room had four accent chairs: two large chairs and two small wooden chairs.
After a while, I decided to sell my wooden frame chairs and add brown velvet chairs for a little contrast. Since it’s a smaller investment than a chair or sectional, accent chairs are a great way to experiment with more color!
Another option for the walls on either side of your focal point is bookshelves. Built-in shelves look great, but you can achieve a similar look on a budget with bookshelves. A rope bookshelf or ladder shelf is my personal favorite!

Then complete it with home decor such as beautiful books, decorative boxes, candles and other small touches.
If you have more empty room walls to fill, try a gallery wall! Personally, I love the look of seamless artwork in mismatched frames. Or use inexpensive printable artwork for a budget-friendly solution.
Another easy way to create a gallery wall is a collection of family photos in matching frames.
It’s important to add plenty of floor space to your living room, but too much space can make your home feel empty and uninviting. Try filling the floor space with functional furniture like an end table or coffee table. In addition to filling empty spaces, they also provide table tops for books, drinks, and bottles.

For a long time, we had an ottoman instead of a coffee table in our living room. It worked because we had a baby and a baby and I wanted our place to be safe for them. But when they got a little bigger, we added a round coffee table and two small cube ottomans that could be turned around to use as footrests. This layout feels so comfortable! In addition, a round coffee table helps to balance all the rectangular shapes in the room (sofa, TV, furniture).
Now there is an egg-shaped coffee table and a brass table. Check out this post to shop my favorite coffee tables!
Need more decorating ideas for living room corners? Earlier I mentioned the floor mirror to the left of our media console. On the right side, I put up a fake tree (8 feet tall) to fill that awkward window corner!
Alternatively, if you have a green thumb, you can add indoor plants to fill in the empty spaces in your room. A tall plant will help fill a vertical space, or you can try hanging plants on a wall.

Sometimes there isn’t room for a large piece of furniture like a console table, but it still needs to fill an empty wall. Another option that works in a small room or apartment is a cart or coffee station! Stylish and functional, these pieces give you a table top to display cute glasses (or mugs) as well as bartender tools (or a coffee maker).
Another way to fill in empty space in your living room is to add a home office. Sometimes a console table can even double as a table – just check the height! Alternatively, you can add a special table with drawers for storage.
We don’t have room for a desk in our living room, but if you want to see some design ideas, I created a home office in the bedroom!
How To Decorate The Wall Behind The Sofa
Don’t have room for two accent chairs in your living room? Instead, try a sofa in the corner of the room with a lamp and a small side table. Add some books or magazines and a blanket for cozy reading!
This peach velvet sofa is in our bedroom, but I would do something like this to fill a corner space in the room! Don’t forget to add a task lamp or a small table lamp for reading light.
Table lamps are my favorite
