Hey guys, this is Kylie! As promised in my last post, I’m here to show you a little more of our post space and share how we’ve been writing in the absence of news!

Living Room Decorating Ideas

After entering the house, we go directly to our living room, so I wanted to create a space that was purposeful and welcoming when guests arrived at our home.

Although there are so many things that can happen in this room, I knew right away that I wanted to use our sofa to create contrast between the rooms. By placing the sofa with its back to the entrance, he feels that the room and the entrance are two separate rooms. While some may say it “cuts” the room, I disagree! This contrast can be created in several ways depending on the size of the room. Using furniture is a great choice, but something as simple as adding two rugs, a light fixture, or a special wall treatment (wallpaper anyone?!) to an entryway can create the illusion of separate rooms.

A console table, dresser or dresser is another great way to define an entryway. It’s a place to throw your keys, a place to add ambient lighting, and a great place to add some decorative touches. If you don’t want to take up valuable space, a narrow bench or wall shelf can help here! My last post was a very narrow hall and used a very narrow shoe rack (like this one) and it’s great!

In my current location, it was important for me to operate as a warehouse. Music notes can become a mess for magnets, so these cabinets were a lifesaver! I got baskets for mail, dog poop, oil, hats and blankets in the cupboards.

Another practical contribution is that there should be space for coats, shoes, umbrellas … things to bring and take out. I’m lucky to have a coat rack, but a hook or coat rack would work too! If I didn’t have a closet, I would put a hook on the wall there. I love this coat rack for a small space (the white/natural color is currently sold out at West Elm, but I found it here!).

My last house had a hallway but no coat closet so lots of hooks for people to put their coats on! It was mostly filled with our clothes, but we moved a few things to our bedroom closet when people came over. Here’s another tip for you – make sure you have empty hooks or hanging accessories and that your closet/hanging space isn’t cluttered before your guests arrive! Your guests are even more welcome if they have somewhere to put their things.

Whether you have a private suite or not, treating your entryway as your own room and decorating it as such is valuable in creating a space that is welcoming and truly sets your home apart. Adding a mirror to your entryway not only looks great, but also reflects light (making your space look even bigger!). Plus, it’s great to have a spot for that “last look” before leaving the house or greeting guests.
