Concrete restoration is a multi-step process that requires careful attention to detail. We recommend hiring a professional concrete contractor to get the job done. Local professionals are particularly familiar with the ins and outs of renovations in your area.

The exact steps will depend on the type of concrete coating you are applying. But here is some general information on how to improve a porch or patio.

Strip-It, E-Etch and Neutra are three friends of clean surface preparation. If you cannot chemically remove existing sealant or coatings, sandblast or media clean the surface.

The answer to this question depends on the severity of the fracture. If you have several hairline cracks, you can probably restore the surface with a layer of concrete. You can repair cracks before applying the coat and you won’t even notice them afterwards.

However, if the cracks in your driveway or patio are significant, resurfacing them is not an option. We suggest hiring a professional contractor to inspect your surface. An experienced and reputable contractor can help you determine if the surface is still viable and can withstand restoration.

Breathtaking Waterfront House On Lake Keowee Inspires Tranquility

Founded in 1971 in the early days of modern decorative concrete. With innovations such as urethane seals and computer-aided design, it has long been at the forefront of the industry. Our driveway is finally done! I am so excited to share this project with you all; While it’s not a massive makeover like our previous renovations, the updates make a huge difference. The main elements of our porch were (mostly) kept the same, but many things were redone and greatly improved in the process. What the project includes:

Our house turns 100 this year, so we are excited to renovate the front porch and steps for her birthday. After 100 years, I think he deserves it! So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

When we bought the house the front steps were very crooked (see the “before” photo gallery at the end of this post); They were stable, but the brick sagged and hence the sandstone steps cracked in places. When I put our pumpkins out in the fall, the ones on the bottom steps always lean to one side…it’s a Tetris challenge to keep them all from falling over! You can see what I mean in the before photo, they are so cracked 😉

We removed the steps and wing walls so we could regrade and replace the foundation. Although we tried to DIY most of the work, a bricklayer took care of the job. The colors of the brick and mortar matched the existing brick foundation and luckily we were able to get pretty close. The old stairs were sandstone, so we decided to keep them as well, and the new sandstone is so beautiful it still amazes me!

Porch Flooring And Foundation

The path leading to the house is still the original sandstone slabs, which we washed after the project, so the scratches shown above are worn from years of use. After a good cleaning it looks great!

Over the years, we also started to notice the deterioration of our porch floor: some of the wood planks started to rot, and the paint was peeling everywhere because of the moisture. We know a full teardown is needed to improve it in the future. Jim and his dad were the dream couple when it came to carpentry, so they took on floor construction. We considered using a synthetic material for the floorboards for added durability, but ultimately decided that wood was the best option to maintain the lakewood feel of the porch. We chose to paint it instead of stain it, which requires more maintenance. Our back deck and steps are stained and we have to recoat them every couple of years, which isn’t much fun! The paint color we chose was Sherwin Williams.

, and while taking the natural color of the sandstone stairs, we love that it contrasts with the color of the house. It makes the entry of the house feel even more limitless when you come upstairs and we love it!

While they were removing the driveway floor, we took the opportunity to run some electrical lines under and inside the front beds and installed some landscape lighting, which we are very excited about! It makes such a beautiful contrast at night and gives it a nice curb appeal. They are connected to a transformer in our basement which steps down the voltage and controls them using a timer. I’m so glad we decided to add these and that Jim and his dad had the patience to install them! We also replaced some plants in the front beds, which really tops it off.

Another wish list item we finally completed was a new full glass panel storm door; The previous door was split in half and had definitely seen better days. We can also replace the glass for a screen, which is great for letting the autumn breeze into the house! I love how the entire panel focuses on the door and our anchor knocker that I bought in Marblehead, Massachusetts!

Our furniture was the same as previous years, so we refreshed the space with much-needed new rugs and pillows. We chose large rugs on both sides, for comfort and also to protect the floor (and our hard work!) from the elements.

It’s actually my favorite place to hang out in our house, so getting back here and enjoying its new look couldn’t be more exciting. He’s also a favorite with Cooper, who is a very outdoorsy dog - the moment I hear the door open, he comes running and jumps on the swing. Honestly, we relaxed here for hours. So happy to be back!
