Building our house is still a work in progress and gardening is ongoing, but getting the front porch ready for fall makes me feel like we’re making at least some progress.

We knew we wanted rocking chairs, so we found these rockers from Target that fit the bar perfectly! They are also very comfortable.

Since our home is a deep, moody charcoal color, I wanted to add soft fall colors to the decor to create a dramatic contrast. Colorful plants add the perfect pop of color and I made sure to add texture with a fluted pot and seagrass basket.

I don’t have much of a green thumb, but luckily my brother does! The company Green Artiscapes fills planters and pre-planting beds with beautiful fall plants, flowing vines and decorative pumpkins. I love the barrel planter he added.

But this article tells you how to create your new columns from scratch, just like we did. We supported our new gable roof with cedar posts versus pressure-treated posts because they are less prone to bending or twisting.

Cut the lengths of PVC sheets you need for the four sides of your column. Attach the first piece of PVC sheet to the front of the cedar post with liquid nail construction glue and 18-gauge nails.

Apply thin beads of liquid nails joining PVC panels to create the foil box.

Nail the boards together with 18-gauge nails, making sure the edges are flush before nailing.

Use a tape measure to determine the length of four 1×8 PVC sheeting pieces for the bottom of the column.

We cut our boards at a 45 degree angle using a miter saw so they fit together perfectly.

Cy places one of the cut pieces next to the other pieces and marks where they meet so he knows where to cut using the miter saw.

Be sure to apply liquid nails to the back of each trim piece before nailing to the base of the post.

How To Decorate Your Front Porch Seasonally

Once you have built the column you will need to fill all the nail holes and seams with paintable caulk.

Once filled, you can paint the strips with a durable exterior paint. Or, if you want your strips to be white, you can clean the PVC strip and leave it unpainted.

We still need to finish the landscaping and walkway for our exterior renovation, but we are pleased with how the columns turned out. They are the perfect “cudi”!

Columns are a unique part of the house’s exterior. They help support the porch floor while also adding style, dimension and detail to the front of the house. They are available in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes and can be structural or purely decorative for the home, depending on the design.

If you’re building a new front porch, columns will be part of the equation. This means making sure you choose a striping material that is built to last and can provide the style and detail you need to complement the style of your porch.

Columns for front porches are usually made of wood. Smaller, thinner rods may be solid, while thicker, more dimensional rods are usually hollow and composed of several pieces joined together.

However, the problem with using traditional wood for this purpose is that wood does not always perform well outdoors in the long term. The moisture content of most woods is quite high; This means that any protective paint or stain applied to its surface will not adhere well and will bubble, chip and peel over time.

When wood is exposed to the elements, it can warp, soften, rot, or crack, depending on the type of wood used. If the columns are structural to help support the weight of the porch roof, columns that are adversely affected by moisture or weather conditions can become a problem over time.

There are few materials as versatile and attractive as wood. But untreated and standard wood strips are fraught with problems, making them less than ideal for this use. That’s why using preservative-treated wood like Belco’s XT Post is a good option.

XT posts are made from wood with preservatives in place to replace normal moisture levels. This makes the wood stronger, more durable, and less prone to the problems of standard wooden columns. Wood gets a better finish without the need for a meticulously applied primer or the worry of paint blistering, cracking or peeling over time. Unlike untreated wood, XT posts do not absorb moisture, so they will not swell, warp or crack, even with prolonged use outdoors.

XT posts and reclaimed wood can be used in the same way to create many of the same styles and designs as natural wood. The only difference is the performance of the foil, which always surpasses natural wood. If you don’t have a lot of space to create a large or covered porch, sometimes the only place to go is up. Two-story porches like this give you more benefits and can really enhance the look of the house.

In this case, columns are needed both structurally and decoratively. Two-piece columns were used at the corners of the design on both floors, and columns were used to support both sides of the entryway in the lower section. The design is made on railings along the perimeter of the porch, creating a harmonious look and style.

Porch strips have become extremely popular over the past few years and are also associated with the revival of mid-century modern detailing. These columns enhance the property’s curb appeal by connecting a multi-level porch that provides both outdoor living space and visual aesthetics.

If you don’t have a front porch, you can still make great use of a tall roof and support columns to enhance the personality and appearance of your home.
