When I had all the measurements figured out, I gave the plans to the man to look at. Once he got an idea of what it was, he started cutting.
Next we drilled some pocket holes to screw the pieces together as we didn’t want the screws to be visible.
Once we drilled all the holes, it was time to assemble! First we screwed the two sides to the bottom. Then we screwed the front and back of the bin. I loved seeing it all together!
Once we all got together it was time to fill the pocket holes. (I wanted a smooth finish!) We used a dowel rod cut into small pieces to connect the holes. We put a little glue on it and then a little hammer. After the glue dried, we (very carefully) shaved the top so that it was flush with the dresser. We then used wood filler to fill in the cracks for a super smooth finish.

To finish the edges of the plywood it was easy to paint, I used drywall because it was easy to spread and dry quickly and easy to sand down. This is the part where my daughter wanted to help so she got a bit messy and there was a lot of clean up behind her. This part took a lot longer to do, but I let him help me because I wanted him to contribute to the project – something he would be proud of.
For the hanging rod, we got this wooden closet rod from Lowes and cut it to size. Then we measured down an inch and a quarter from the top and screwed it into the center of the piece. We drill the holes so that the screw does not stick; Then we filled and sanded it down as well.
The project was easy to create, but it took a little longer to complete than I expected. (Partly because my daughter wants to help and partly because I still work full time and have to do it in shifts.) Sanding is my least favorite thing in the world. I can’t stress enough how much I hate it. But it is *essential* for a nice smooth finish. So I took my time sanding it and was very pleased. This will definitely save you some extra time and elbow grease. (I used a circular sander for the larger areas and the smaller hand sander pictured for the more detailed parts.)
We used a combination of paint and primer to paint the piece. The paint was incredibly thick so I thinned it with water to make it easier to get a nice smooth finish. It took several more coats (with more sanding in between) to get the coverage I wanted, but this way I was able to cover it without any brush marks. For the compartment under the rod, I also taped the sides to get a more even coat on all sides. Instead of stocking up on a huge arsenal on Craigslist, I decided to hit up one of my favorite big box stores in Europe. They had the solution I wanted: tall storage with hooks and drawers. The hooks are a little high on the girls, but I really wanted those drawers… I have a step board that stays in front of the clothes, but if there’s a problem in a few months, I’ll move everything around.
The two units are screwed together and I mount them to the wall, but the girls are also given *strict* instructions not to crawl into the unit or climb the shelf.

We went over the dress before I hung them all up to throw out the ones that were torn or too small. We still have quite a large basket of clothes, but it’s really nice not to have small items of clothing scattered around the house! This thing holds a lot!!!
