Large Bay Window Curtain Pole

Large Bay Window Curtain Pole – Before I get into bay window treatments, I want/need to say that the 333 Guide to hard-to-find rules and tips is complete.

I couldn’t be more proud of it. And one thing I really like is that many of these rules you can’t find anywhere else. For example, I created the formula for what size flashlight I should buy. And there’s a glossary with dozens of window treatment terms. And much more! I’ve actually updated this post to explain more about what’s in the guide.

If you have Part I, you should have already received a new, comprehensive guide. (It will say Complete Guide on the cover)

NOTE: If you have not received your guide, please check your spam folder before contacting me. It’s probably there. Or you look at it and don’t know what it is. You will receive an email from Sendowl my shopping cart.

And it will say “An updated version of…”. This depends on whether you just purchased the rules guide or received it as part of a bundle with other products. You’ll probably get them again too.

Honestly, most of the time I feel that bay windows are quite simple, however, there are two situations that sometimes cause some confusion.

1) When there is a deep window sill and/or window seat, or a radiator under a bay window.

How High To Hang Curtains + Your Other Questions Answered!

One thing I’ve seen over the years is that people put something up just because they don’t want to see a closed window. Or they have been brainwashed into thinking that there MUST be something in the window.

Contrary to what some people believe is “traditional,” 18th century windows often had no window treatments or had the simplest window treatments. You haven’t seen some of the heavy, elaborate work you see these days.

One thing I really despise when it comes to bay window treatments is something like this.

We saw this image earlier when talking about window treatment styles. So, if you look at this post, you will clearly see some of what I’m talking about.

Bay Window Furnishing Solutions

So let’s say we need light control and/or privacy for our bay window with window seat. What are our options?

Wait, Laurel. Can you make curtains? I thought you said somewhere not to have curtains if there is a window seat.

Maybe I have And it’s still not my first choice. But I found an image where I think they look good.

Beyond that, I’m having trouble with a few other things, though. The table is too small for the window seat. I mean, if you’re going to sit by the window, why sit in front of it?

How To Choose And Hang Curtains In A Bay Window

But we have beautiful high ceilings and beautiful windows with floating curtains. That part was very well done, I think.  And I also love the window seat.

My living room was photographed exactly 4 years ago – with the inside of the Roman Shades support. They are still expensive 6.5 years later.

However, measuring for an outside-mount Roman shade in a bay window can put a novice decorator in big trouble.

You will measure. As with a standard window, you measure the length to where you want the window shade to go. Make a small pencil mark and measure the middle window and then the right window.

Truly Affordable, Luxurious Curtain Poles For Your Bay Window

This is a problem because your Roman blind is always mounted on a plate, which means there will be a projection.

Above this elegant room, you can see the edge of the board. Sometimes the board goes in the opposite direction. You have to cover it up. And you need to know the projection of this plate.

And what this means in plain English is that measuring the front of the frame is not the same as measuring it through the window.  Therefore, if you use the window measurement, your plates will collide.

The only solution is to hang the blinds on the window frame. And it could be by a few centimeters. If the window casing (lining) is on the edge of the wall, the blinds will hang over the edge and into the space.

How Curtain Holdbacks Can Help Brighten Up Your Room

Plus, of course, there’s an angle to your bay window. But, the window treatments above are a perfect example of what I’m talking about.

Now, I’m thinking about teasing you that it’s in the new guide. (and it is!)

And I know I wouldn’t be very happy if someone did that to me first. Of course, I want you to get the new guide too. But I also want you not to be mad at me.

So, I’m going to tell you the very easy way to know how much each shade needs.

Curved Bay Window Curtain Pole

Take two index cards or other thick paper. Mark the depth of the board. Make a pencil mark on the sill. Do this by all means. The measurements between the two marks are the correct width that each board needs.

However, I’m not sure how strong they are. I’m sure they’ll be fine with something light. Oh, and they show off the scary rings with clips. I don’t understand them.

But if you want something better, it needs to be customized.  They will probably still do it in sections together if it’s a large window.

You can use much the same method to figure out sizes when making custom curtains for a bay window.

Hanging Curtains All Wrong

Take the indicated measurement of 12″ along the two angles and then measure the distance between the two end points. Below is a triangle calculator.  However, if you do this in picmonkey you will get the angle. It said 27 degrees and the calculator said 127, so forgive me, math is not my strongest subject.  But in this case, it was 127 degrees.

Oh, I know, it’s a total pain in the ass. But it’s also asking for a custom rod and it doesn’t fit. Just gather enough pieces of newspaper and use a ruler to make your lines.

If there is a soffit in the bay window and the ceiling is 8 feet, and I want to make curtains, I prefer to mount the curtains outside, like we did in this living room above.

Who doesn’t love this amazing lake house by Hickman Design Associates! Everything about this vignette is perfect, IMO. It looks like these beautiful curtains are hanging under the soffit. So what’s the difference? The difference is that they are very large windows with transoms and therefore must be at least 2.7 meters high at the top of the curtain.

As you can see, it comes in several finishes. And they have a connector for use in bay windows.

So that’s it. Some of my favorite window treatments for bay windows and how to measure Roman shades and custom curtain rods that fit perfectly.

I recently spoke to an elderly client who was struggling to decorate her bay windows and asked for my advice. She doesn’t want to hire a designer to make gifts or fancy tops. He wanted simple paneling throughout the house.

Then he confesses that a proverbial handyman has arrived. You know which one. He only had thirty minutes for a “little job.” He placed a stick on the flat side of the wall, overlooking the bay. He finished. It’s covered forever. Oh no! After all the money he paid as an additional fee, the beautiful bay was blocked and the room didn’t seem as big as he expected! Oops.
