The sectional is a multi-part unit that provides some flexibility in seating arrangements in the living room.

You should arrange your room in a layout that matches the size of the living room and makes it easy to use the living space for your needs. You should also consider the rest of the furniture in the living room and how it fits into the planned layout of the living room.

Before moving sectionals, start by finding the focal point of your living room. This can be a TV, a fireplace or a large window that offers a fantastic view.

Once you find your focal point, you can position the main body of the sectional unit to face where you want to look. A focal point-based layout makes it easy for everyone to enjoy the scene while creating a balanced, eye-pleasing layout.

The sectional may look big, but that doesn’t mean it’s not suitable for a small living room. While it’s important to find the perfect sectional for your space, you have several different options to help you match your sectional.

Ideas For Arranging A Sectional Sofa In A Small Living Room

I recently shared our family room update, which featured a large sectional and a beautiful round leather stool. You can visit this post for all the details about choosing and arranging furniture. Today I’m going to talk about my second goal for this space: a light, bright, open feel (which can be difficult with large furniture!)…in short, how to decorate a living room with a sectional.

Large pieces of furniture can sometimes make a room feel too heavy, but I knew I wanted the space to be light and airy, so (besides maximizing seating) that was the main goal. I always use five default tricks to make a space light and open:

Even with small children, you will find bright colors that enhance the brightness and open feel of the living space.

Our walls were the same as Sherwin Williams, matching the gray below (you can see all of our paint colors in this house here). This beautiful chameleon light gray color that looks warm or cool depending on the light is perfect for this space. All finishes are Sherwin Williams Extra White.

The Pros And Cons Of Different Sectional Sofa Furniture Layouts

I loved the blue-gray rug here, but it was too dark for the new look, so I replaced it with the one from my front living room…and I think it fits. Light, warm neutrals with a slightly traditional pattern are the perfect complement to the cool, modern look of the Cube modular sofa (more on this choice in Part 1 of this room). Despite its bright colors, I know how forgiving it is to dirt, spills, and stains, which may or may not be a problem with four kids. 😉

A few light accents and inexpensive accent pillows and a lighter (still kid-friendly) color scheme complete the look.

In our family room remodel, I added one of the two fig trees (in a taller basket so the kid doesn’t eat the laundry 😉)…

I have two fiddle leaf fig trees that I bought four years ago and they have survived in our family, but if you are worried about keeping one alive, I have also seen some really great fiddle leaf figs. I’ve included my favorites here in various sizes and price points:

An interesting project for this room was a hanging plant. I’m a big fan of balance when it comes to symmetry, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to put it into practice: balancing a violin leaf on one end of the section and a hanging vine on the other.

It’s a live plant, so I had to do some creative planning to make sure it wouldn’t drip onto the new couch. I originally had a small concrete hanging pot, but I may have accidentally left it on the counter and maybe the vines behind it were hanging seductively to the ground…and the baby may have plucked it or torn it off the counter onto the floor. (and yes, it was good, thankfully!). In the end, I decided a vintage silver bowl (which was actually a prize given to my grandmother decades ago – so interesting when something has a story, right?!) was my best bet. I simply placed the potted plant – still in the pot in the nursery – directly into the silver bowl and hung it with this macrame hanger.

I also added faux green to my vignettes above the TV. Anything that requires an actual ladder to the water is better in my book. 😉

I’m a neutral girl and love the interest added through texture over color. But regardless of your natural leanings, keeping the look somewhat monochromatic can help offset the bulkiness of a large section. Similar tones can be soothing, allowing a large sofa to blend in a bit while the textures still provide plenty of variety.

I brought in some texture with a mast table (which makes a great DIY if you can find a log!) and a neutral rug. Adding a natural fiber rug to our back door, of course
