Living Room Decoration For Diwali – It all started with a quick message from Ridhi Kale asking me if I wanted to create some Diwali decor for a home in India today. A message like this makes you stop and then stop again. India at home today? Did I want this feature? How could I say no to that?
Except that they worked on deadline. I had three days to prepare it all. In the middle of this already crazy work week, made even crazier by other upcoming Diwali collaborations and because I was going out of town for the fourth day. Every class was already scheduled and Diwali decorating was nowhere on the agenda for our home.
Living Room Decoration For Diwali
I usually find that there aren’t enough hours in the day for all the work that needs to be done. If I start thinking about how and when I’m going to do something, it sometimes becomes overwhelming.

So I made a simple rule for myself. Don’t think. If an interesting opportunity presents itself to you, say “Yes” first. Once you commit, you automatically start working on it and everything falls into place.
So the commitment was three days and I had no idea what I was going to do. I knew I didn’t have time to shop, so plan 1 was to use everything I already had at home. That’s when mom came to the rescue. I called her and asked her to send me anything she thought worthy of Diwali decoration. This included candles, diyas, dupattas, scarves and all her brassware.
Then I started searching the net. I scoured Pinterest and my blog posts for Diwali decoration ideas. That’s what I usually do when I’m looking for ideas from scratch. Bombarding myself with beautiful images, I began to create a picture of where I was headed.
The first place I wanted to decorate was our lobby. If you have an annual vacation, you are already waiting and thinking about what else awaits you.
Traditional Diwali Decor Ideas For Every Room
The thing is, I used the time to decorate for Diwali a month before. It seemed like it had to be spent again just before Diwali. So plan 2 was that all my decorations from now have to last until Diwali so I don’t have to redecorate.
This meant that fresh flowers came out. I used these faux marigold threads I had and hung them as a backdrop for the Buddha. Another advantage of using artificial flowers was that I could start putting them up a day early. I didn’t have to wait for fresh flowers in the morning for the photo session itself.
Then came the second entrance…the one from the hall into our living room. I decided to use dupattas to create a beautiful drape.
A local carpenter helped fix the 5 hooks at the top of the door. I then folded each dupatta in half lengthwise and placed a safety pin at the two ends and the center of the dupatta. I just hung the safety pin on the hook and it gave me nice shells on top of the upholstery.

Then came the marigold along the edge of the drapery. I couldn’t recreate this one either, so artificial flowers came to the rescue again. With a needle and thread, I tied these marigold threads along the entire length of the dupatta and stitched around the stem 3 to 4 times. I did this every 5 to 6 flowers.
Then I had to tie two dupattas on the sides of the neck at different heights to stack them on top of each other. After trying different double sided tape hooks that kept falling off, I finally got my hands on these Command hooks that stayed tight and didn’t move. A line of embroidery thread went around the drapery where I wanted to hang it. I tied it loosely enough that I could pull the same string over the hook on the wall.
Next came the dining niche. It is located on one side of our living room, and thus our entire living room would be in a holiday mood.
I saw a beautiful floral chandelier in our Diwali Decor Ideas post which made me think that a marigold chandelier would look great above our dining table. This was easy enough to do.

The logic of the chandelier was the same as the rest of the decor. I used artificial flowers and foliage to last the entire holiday season. I started with the greenery, wrapping it around the hoop, one wire at a time.
The hoop became a little heavy with the greens and became difficult to drive. So I hung it on the rafters using black embroidery thread. The existing pendant lights came from the upper rafters in the form of hoops. I pulled them up to touch the beams to make room for the chandelier to hang underneath.
Next were those gold fillers, which were regularly twisted onto the hoop to add luster to the chandelier.
Finally, I added a string of fairy lights to the chandelier and now it sparkles when I put a pendant above it.

A red and gold festive tablecloth and a large bouquet of fresh flowers completed the festive look. A brass flower urn along with large brass lamps spells out ‘Diwali’ all the way.
Finally, inspired by the image in our marigold decorating ideas post, I strung fresh marigold garlands behind our dining room chairs. Our lunch niche was fully prepared for Diwali.
That left the living room. We had to make it festive too. This beautiful bright phulkari paste from mom’s collection was perfect to brighten up the cream couch.
Lots of brass dishes, candles, diyas and fresh marigolds also made the living room look festive in no time.

Danesh then had to work his magic. We thought it would only take a few hours, but it took him almost as long to pick up the house as it took me to put it all together. Every time he finished clicking on the “scene”, I quietly handed him my phone to take a few pictures for me too and he loved it. So the pictures you see today are mostly hers.
I don’t know how many more hours he must have spent filtering and editing all the pictures he took, but this was the end result.
I don’t know about you, but it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. There is something magical about seeing your work in print and I can’t explain the satisfaction and pride I feel every time I hold a copy in my hand. Maybe because it’s the first time. Maybe next time I won’t be so excited…and maybe I will!
From the rush to finish my Diwali decor every year and get the pictures on the blog in time, I jumped into decorating way ahead of schedule this year…I couldn’t share any pictures until the article was published. It was worth the effort and the wait.
