Since the place was quite untouched, it left us with so many options. This is great, but you can also feel overwhelmed. Leena and Shabir had some ideas about the atmosphere they liked, so we put together a vision board. Assembling this panel guided us in creating the design. They wanted a room that was modern and moody and something unique that no one else would have. By talking and finding examples of what they liked, we came up with this concept for their space. Another option would be a black wall. We agreed that shiplap is more suitable for a home office or bedroom. We also thought about their interior design style. Both love modern walls.
Once they were happy with the design, we could start working on the actual space. Taking that first step towards change is always scary and exciting at the same time, isn’t it?
Since the composition of the space was quite complex, we solved it in stages, which we worked out before all other actions.

The color we chose was Cyberspace SW 7076, a charcoal black with blue undertones. Cyberspace SW 7076 is deep enough to create drama, but still airy enough not to overwhelm. It’s a great color for a black wall and looks great with the light wood they wanted for their slatted wall.

After painting the background for our design – the wall – we started with the installation of the poplar wood wall. This piece would take up about one-third of the space of the accent wall and bring a touch of softness to an otherwise dark and dramatic space.

After creating a wall of wooden slats, we moved on to a geometric accent wall. This design took more time, but the result is so impressive.
If you want to save money on a slatted wall, you can use pine, but we chose poplar because the color is very beautiful and did not need any preparation or painting. The slats cost $200.
Although we had our own design blueprint to adhere to, we didn’t necessarily stick to it strictly. Towards the end, we reassessed where to place the last few pieces of the black accent wall. I encouraged Leena and Shabir to bring the couch and put it in the room so they could visualize the result. As you can see, the result is a stunning black accent wall!
Don’t be afraid to clean up a little while you work. Moving things around and having some final pieces on hand can help you make those final decisions and feel good about yourself.

You’ll notice they used a black bracket for the TV shelf, which adds continuity to the room. A white or wooden TV frame would compete too much. It really helps bring the whole room together. It stands out and looks so elegant while adding to the overall look without distracting from the stunning modern black walls.
