For the purpose of this drawing, make sure your mandala creators understand that they are creating a very symmetrical drawing. Your circular design is not 100% accurate. You can also make some simple snowflake drawings to help them understand radial balance.
They should also represent their works of art. If they want to include baseballs in their artwork to show off their favorite sport, let them do so. Remember that the point is not to recreate what has already been achieved, but to create art that represents the artist (or child).
Before you begin, you need to teach your child about symmetry. Show examples of objects that have symmetry in nature or just everyday objects. We also used this drawing idea to create a fun black and white radial design for our simple food sculptures.
Let your children talk about equal and unequal fractions as you draw these designs. There’s always a way to combine math and art!

Start with a piece of cake in the center of the mandala. Draw a shape on one side of the cake (or pizza slice), then repeat the shapes in the same place on all the slices.
For each circular layer, use simple lines and shapes to create a pleasing radial design. Continue adding different mandala patterns and simple shapes until your circular pattern is complete.
Trace motifs with felt-tip pens or black permanent markers. This helps them see their designs better when using tempera paint.
Use a paint marker, black sharpie, or colored sharpies to add additional designs to the dried tempera paint.

Sketch guides extend from the center of your shape to create segments. You can use these lines to repeat shapes and lines in your mandala design. You can decide how many sections you need depending on the level of complexity you want.
When drawing a simple mandala, the easiest way to work is with a circle shape. Create guidelines or sections to help you create radial symmetry. Start in one section and create a pattern or texture. It can be as simple as drawing small dots, lines, curves or repeating shapes like triangles or circles. Let your creativity guide you. Repeat the pattern on each section, mirroring either side of the dividing lines.
Display each mandala artwork with pride and love created by your young artists. Mandalas are the perfect motif for beginners to draw, paint and express their creativity.

Traditionally, mandalas are a circular pattern. However, if you want, you can use another geometric pattern, but start with a circle.

Use a ruler to measure the center of your piece of paper, then use a compass to draw a circle. The circle can be any size you want. I suggest somewhere between 1/2 and 1 inch. From there I started making more circles of different sizes. Use a combination of protractor, compass and freehand drawing to draw your mandala.
With so many lines and circles, it can be difficult to see your vision. When I create a mandala, I like to draw over the design with a fine black marker. In the image below you can see that I didn’t go through all the lines, just the ones I wanted to keep. The rest will be deleted when I’m done.
Now it’s time for watercolors and paint. There is no right or wrong way. You may want to color individual designs or use a few colors to paint over an entire page, such as an ombre effect.
The next step is completely optional, but since I’m a perfectionist, I like to go over all the lines again with a black marker.
