A mandala is a complex shape that is often circular. In fact, “Mandala” is a Sanskrit word meaning “circle”. Mandalas often have a central point, where there are many symbols, shapes and forms.

Mandalas can have geometric and organic shapes. They can also contain recognizable images that have meaning for the person who created them.

Essentially, mandalas represent the connection between our inner world and outer reality. Making your own lenses can be both inspiring and therapeutic.

You can also use a compass if you want – although below, we don’t use a compass.

How To Draw Colorful Dream Catcher Mandala Art

The first step in how to draw a lens is to measure the size of your paper. The space can be as big or as small as you want. The larger the size, the more room you’ll have for detail and color. I made an 8″ x 8″ square.

Next, use your ruler and pencil to draw a dot in the center of the circle, as shown below.

The next step in how to draw a lens is to draw around this point. When you draw a point in the center of your square, one of the easiest ways to draw a circle is to use a compass. If you don’t have a compass, don’t worryβ€”drawing circles is easy if you follow these steps:

Using your ruler, measure 1/2″ (or more – depending on your preference) from the center point. Mark 1/2″ above, below, left and right of the small point, as shown below.

Next, measure another distance from the smaller point. I chose 1.5″ from the small dot. Using the same method, mark equal distances above, below, left and right of the center dot.

You can continue making as many dotted lines as you want. I chose to make three lines of dots, as you can see below.

The important thing is to make sure that all the points you make are parallel to the center.

Now that you’ve drawn your dots, it’s time to connect them. Draw a straight line connecting the points going up and down and a straight line connecting the points going in the same direction. See below for a step-by-step example of how to draw a lens.

Next, draw another set of dots at the same distance from the center as your first set of dots. See the example above. The yellow arrows indicate where the new dotted line will be. Try to make them at a 45 degree angle to the perpendicular lines, but don’t worry about being perfect. Your goal in creating a mandala is just to have fun! πŸ˜ƒ

Next, use your ruler to connect the dots you just made. Now your image should look like the image below.

Now you want to connect the dots in a circle. To do this, start from one point, and draw a curved line to another point, etc.

Don’t worry about making “good” circles. We don’t worry about perfection here! Take one step at a time, from point to point.

It’s okay if you make a mistake. In the example below, you can see two examples in the outer circle where I got it wrong the first time. If this is your first time learning to draw lenses, trust me – it will be easier the next time you do it.

Tip: If you don’t want to take the time to draw your own circuit board, you can download and print your own graph paper. This is great for drawing, but if you use graph paper to create the finished piece, remember that you’ll end up with a few blue lines under your lens. After drawing your grid, you can erase the lines!

Now that you have drawn the outline of your mandala, you can start painting in your mandala!

Below, you can see that I started with a simple circle in the center and drew a petal shape around the circle.

You can start from the center, or from wherever you feel inspired to create other articles.

Using the lines and circles you draw as guides, you can draw shapes like circles, triangles, raindrops, loops, and more. Check out my tutorial on how to draw a pattern if you want step-by-step ideas!

The main thing is to repeat your look in the right places. For example, if you draw a circle on one line, make sure you draw it in the same place on other lines.

The key is to take it slowly, draw one shape at a time and go around the whole circle and draw the shape in the right place.
