The Master of Science in Sustainable Environmental Systems (SES) is one of the world’s leading, interdisciplinary and sustainable programs. This STEM degree program is designed to meet today’s growing demand for environmental professionals, including specializations in environmental science, sustainable design, and climate forecasting. Using technology and education across graduate schools for planning and the environment, students learn the social skills and critical thinking processes necessary to analyze today’s environmental processes; introduce new solutions to environmental problems; protecting the environment and social justice; and participate in various projects in the development and implementation of plans, policies and communities.

Diverse, passionate, and justice-driven, our community is united by the common goal of sharing all that nature and the environment have to offer. The SES program accommodates students with a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, ensuring that well-organized projects work well and combine diverse careers. Students who join a program in technology, or have a Bachelor of Architecture or a 5-year degree or Masters, can get 10 credits – and the corresponding amount. With class sizes of just 8-12 students, you’ll collaborate with peers, teachers, and industry and community partners to learn, share, and apply the skills and tools needed to improve environmental practices. living and meeting the challenges of the world.
In Sustainable Environmental Systems, international connections are linked to academic and extracurricular opportunities at GCPE, the School of Architecture, the Institute, and beyond. We work with school organizations including the Sustainability Coalition and the Sustainability Center to monitor school sustainability, organize Global Action Week, and establish schools as a laboratory project. Beyond the gate, our practice methods, learning opportunities, and climate action research methods such as RAMP (Revolutionary Adaptation Plan) allow you to improve and develop your graduate skills.
Through studios, high-value projects created by sales, actions, applied research, cooperation and public events, you will have the opportunity to have a real impact on the world of sustainable and just development in New York City, the region, even the country and partnerships. . The Sustainable Environmental Systems program is taught by development, community, and government leaders active in promoting best practices to advance environmental science, management, policy, planning and design in the NYC area and beyond. . Climate Action & Sustainability
Almost every student commits to a fellowship or involvement in a company, organization, or professional project during their time in the program. Project research funding provides additional project-based opportunities to work with our faculty and colleagues. Past fellowships include an Environmental Justice Fellowship with the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance and its affiliates, and a SWIM (Stormwater Infrastructure Matters) Coalition Fellowship. Recently, Sustainable Environmental Systems colleagues and staff from the NYC Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, NYC Department of Environmental Protection, New York Sustainable Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA), UN-Habitat, UPROSE, The Point CDC, El Puente, Resilience Education Training and Innovation Center, , Urban Green Council, and Sustainability Center.
As climate change continues to disrupt frontline regions around the world, global solutions can support action, strengthen cooperation, and initiate inclusive strategies. Our international student body enjoys sharing our experiences across regions and cultures, and extends this practice through our study abroad programs. The SES Sustainability Knowledge Exchange was recently attended by leaders of organizations, companies and academic institutions, as well as government officials in Brazil, the Netherlands, and Puerto Rico. Meet Bansari Makadiya! Bansri holds a Bachelor of Architecture from SEDA, Navrachana University, India. He concluded his study with the idea of trying to compare the performance of the atmosphere of the type of composite rammed earth that tested different materials of the layer. He was a teaching assistant at the Spring 2023 Green Infrastructure Studio, and worked on various research and development projects as an intern at the Regional Planning Association (RPA). RPA is also a client of Bansri’s Capstone project, where he made the case for improving transportation as a vehicle that could provide housing to New York City residents displaced by climate change. Currently, Bansri works as a climate and sustainability planner in the NYC office of City Planning and Brooklyn Borough, focusing on sustainable planning, especially addressing issues related to water. _ In the MS in Sustainable Environmental Systems, our students bring their diverse expertise across regions, departments and communities into a creative, leading, and educational process.
