Mug Design Ideas Drawing – These mugs with mugs were made with ceramic pens and plain white ceramic mugs – personally I find the pens easier to use than brushes. I came up with the idea while browsing my local craft store. I was in the ceramic painting department and there was a sample cup placed next to the ceramic pens for customers to try them on. And tried the one they had – the mug was covered in multicolored doodles, like a piece of graffiti, and I actually thought it looked pretty good. I liked the idea of a collaborative project that developed ‘organically’ and I thought it was an idea that could be transferred to the house with the help of family and friends. If a mug and pen sat in the kitchen for a week or so, anyone with a spare moment could add it. The quality of the drawing is not important because this is more about fun and friendship. If people don’t want to draw, they can write a message instead or just their name. The color dries almost instantly and there is no mess involved.
After about 24 hours, the color is completely cured and with the type of pens I used, no oven baking is necessary. Once finished, the finished project should be dishwasher safe, but I’ve found that it’s not a good idea to soak or scratch it in water anyway, as this will remove the paint.
Mug Design Ideas Drawing
This is an activity that everyone can participate in, both children and adults. I found it quite addictive and the design possibilities are endless. You can cover the mugs with doodles as densely as you like, even overlapping the drawings to create a layered, more graffiti-like effect. Limiting the colors or making a range of mugs in different colors would also be good, I think. Since I have a weakness for black and white art, I also produced one with only a black pen. So now that I have a Cricut Mug Press in my hands, I have been ALL about the mugs. I showed you how to make a full cover mug with beautiful color from top to bottom, a handwritten cute coffee quotes and motivational saying, a multi-colored animal mug made by layers of indelible ink, and pen and marker mugs drawn with a Cricut. I also made the cutest mug boxes to hold both 11 oz. and 15 oz. cup boxes! But I’m not done yet…I’ve saved the best for last. I’ll show you how to transfer your OWN drawings into artwork to make true DIY custom mugs!
For example, this mug has a picture that my daughter Alexa drew for me back in kindergarten. I keep the picture at home in my entryway. I faithfully reproduced the drawing on my coffee mug and I love it!
Now this mug here is a drawing my daughter did the other day – it’s a Pokemon called Snom. She just drew on the paper and I handed her actual drawing rights to the mug. Isn’t this cool?
And for us big kids, this is a monogrammed mug that I made with different colors. And all I did was just put dots on paper…I’m surprised how cool it is! This project was inspired by one of my first blog projects – the DIY Sharpie mug!

I’ll show you how to make all three styles of mugs in this freehand DIY custom mug tutorial!
To make these mugs we use Cricut Infusible Ink markers that transfer directly to the poly coating on a Cricut mug. You will want either Cricut Infusible Ink pens or markers. Or both – feel free to mix and match! The pens are good for drawings with a lot of detail, because the pen tip is very fine. Markers are better for designs that you want to look vibrant and distinctive. The pen was used for I Love You mugs and Pokemon mugs, while markers were used for monogrammed mugs!
Remember to ONLY use Infusible Ink Markers and Pens – Sharpies and other non-sublimation ink pens and markers will not work for this DIY custom mug tutorial.
You will also need a small white laser copy paper to draw your design. I recommend two sheets of plain eight and a half by eleven inch paper per design for the easiest application, and I’ll show you how to cut these to size BEFORE you start drawing for best results! I cut these on my Cricut cutting machine which made it super easy, but you can also cut these with scissors.

A cutting mat with blue light handle, the fine pointed blade and a heat resistant band are also necessary for this DIY personal mug project.
Now let’s talk about the mug itself. You can’t just use any mug – it has to be a polycoated sublimation mug so there’s something for the ink to go into. , but if you can’t find them, just look for some white sublimation empty mugs between eleven and sixteen ounces. Dollar store soda will NOT work, so don’t spill ink on them.
To transfer your Infusible Ink designs to the mugs, we use the Cricut Mug Press. Yeah, this sweet little thing right here…it makes the whole transfer process SUPER easy, and I’ll show you exactly how to do it.
Now, I can’t help you draw cute pictures, but I can show you my trick for tracing pictures of your kids’ artwork and drawings and provide blank templates for your freehand drawings, as well as easy-to-use dot and monogram templates!

First you need a freehand mug design! You can make a monogram, shapes like butterflies, or just draw them freely. You can even trace an older drawing you have – I used one of my favorite drawings done by my daughter when she was little and traced it onto my pre-cut template. I really like how they all looked!
To make this super easy for you, I’ve created designs to help you get started, and all you have to do is download them from my free resource library. Look for design #294 and click it to download to your computer.
Here’s what each of the designs look like in the Cricut Design Space. These are Dot Shapes (they are stacked on top of each other so you may want to group and separate to find the one you want to make).

For this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a butterfly from the first set, a monogram “M” from the second set, and a drawing on the graphic template from the third set.
First open Cricut Design Space and upload the SVG file. For the monogram mug, I have included all 26 letters of the alphabet, so choose which letter you want to use. If you’re not sure how to upload an SVG cut file to Cricut Design Space, check out this helpful video tutorial series I made for you.
You will notice that there are TWO sizes of mug designs in all of my files, the smallest one above is for 12oz. mug, while the largest on the floor is for 15 oz. cup. Both also include 3 additional cutouts, stacked on the right, that are used to wrap and protect your mug in the Cricut Mug Press.
The first thing you’ll want to do is select “Ungroup” at the top right of the Layers panel.

Then find the monogram you want (remember, 12oz designs are in the top half and 15oz designs are in the bottom half) and hide or delete everything else. Here I chose the 12oz “M” design plus the three cover layers (which you keep for each letter you choose):
On the next screen on the left you will see two mats. Be sure to top with “mirrors”. Just click on the toggle button that says “mirror” on the left and you’ll see it turn green.
NOTE: There is no need to mirror the artwork template design as it is symmetrical. However, all other designs intended for Infusible Ink mugs should be mirrored.
Now it’s time to choose your materials
