My head is spinning trying to find distance learning art lessons that can also be used in in-person art classes. My school district currently has three reopening plans, which means my brain is trying to plan and make sense of three different situations… so enter my new BFF colored pencils!

Students can write initials, full names, words or quotes that mean something to them. Simple speech bubbles or block letters will work, but these colored pencil name designs would be a great choice for graffiti discussions. My students always respond to Banksy’s drawings and the discussion question “What is graffiti art?” always makes my students think.

It could be the cover of a sketch pad or a portfolio design and I know students can feel successful even if they use very simple letters.

If you want to take a colored pencil lesson, check out this paint splatter drawing tutorial. This is a great way for students to learn how to mix colors and feel accomplished with the organic freeforms they create.

Summer is melting, and I’m trying to enjoy every moment. This is a very simple pencil and watercolor drawing using @blickartmaterials liquid watercolors. Add @sakuramicron pencil lines when the paint dries or keep it simple. It makes a satisfying drawing page, party decoration or handmade birthday card. My sister and I have a painting at @paseogalleryone in Oklahoma City this month. Great to be able to share space with @artistamachad, especially since he lives and works in South Carolina. She creates beautiful watercolor landscapes based on her experiences with chronic illness. One of our latest artworks is a linocut print. I love watching my students draw after a day of carving and planning designs. We just finished the artwork and I really enjoyed the whole process. Simple abstract flowers using red, yellow and white acrylic paint. 🌻🌼🌺 My students of Sculpture II (students of grades 10-12) made portraits from wire. They used photographs to make continuous line drawings and traced wires onto them. I use this as an introduction to wire before we move on to wire drawing sculpture.
ON! My name is Sierra Machado and I teach art in a public school in Oklahoma. It is a creative space dedicated to teaching crafts and creating art. Can you guess? When we switched to distance learning in the spring of 2020, the quarters changed too! This means that 100 of the children I taught every day for 12 weeks moved on to the next research class, (health, ) and a new team of 95 students started art… REMOTELY! Teaching art remotely is hard enough, but it’s especially hard to form meaningful relationships with students I’ve never met in person. This lesson is a cool and personal way to get to know something very personal to them: their names! When our district decided to start the 2020-2021 school year. completely at a distance, I knew this lesson was going to be a winner again. The students did not disappoint!
I based this project on this GREAT video, (“Positive Word Graffiti Art”) by Rebecca Speech. This video was originally created on the Artsonia site, but is now restricted. The link here will give you the version that Rebecca posted on Youtube!
Name Art Design Drawing For 1st Page Of Drawing Book
We also watched some videos about street artists like Banksy and the evolution of graffiti and its development beyond the label of “vandalism”.
I adapted Rebecca’s lesson structure to create the name design and create a packet with step-by-step visual instructions.
NOTE: The Artsonia video link on the package sleeve is no longer valid. Use the link above!
Feel free to edit the package to suit your distance learning needs, but if you adapt my materials, please credit me and http://www..wordpress.com when sharing results images.
