Outfit Ideas Drawing – This week I practiced making kawaii clothes. It’s actually not as difficult as I thought if you keep in mind a few points that I’ll share in this post.

Dressing up Kawaii is like dressing up a fat doll. You have to imagine how the kawaii body fits under the layers.

Boys and girls are very similar in body structure. Both are plump and round, childlike. There are some differences to note:
Keep these points and shapes in mind when visualizing and drawing clothes. Think about the volume of the body under the clothes, imagine the clothes going around the body, arms, legs and head.
Now that we understand the kawaii body, let’s see how we can “dress” them in basic skirts, pants, shirts, and shoes. You can use these examples as a starting point and add your own design tweaks and embellishments.

I made a separate section for kawaii hats because I wanted to practice drawing the head by defining the hair and face. And I just wanted to have fun 🙂
This is my first time using color and copic markers and scanning color drawings. It adds new challenges! For example, color intensity seems to fade during digitization and needs to be restored in post-production. It takes time. On the other hand, color brings a whole new dimension to the effect of the drawing, so it’s worth it.
Below are some examples of kawaii animal hats, also known as anthro hats. Antros are kawaii human characters in animal costumes, which makes them super cute!
I included Tokidoki in the anthro round because the Tokidoki cactus friends are human characters dressed in plant costumes instead of animal costumes. But the idea is the same.

Here are some examples of fun ways to dress up your kawaii characters in hats. Much of the inspiration for these hats and animal hats comes from Chris Hart’s book
Now put it together. We have seen the body of a human kawaii character and how to draw clothes on the body. We also took a look at some hats and fun accessories.
Below is my version of this exercise. First I will (again) show the kawaii body. Then a kawaii body with clothes. I’ve left the blue lines to show the shape of the body and how the clothes fit around it. The third drawing shows the same two costume figures, but with the construction lines removed.
This week I needed a pen to draw a thick consistent line. The best solution I found is the Tombo Dual Brush Pen (coarse brush side). The line is great, but it takes a while to dry, so it’s susceptible to smudging.

Brush pens are great, but they don’t produce an even width line. Sharpies are supposed to be fine, but they bleed, even on paper without blood..

Let’s talk aesthetics first. Aesthetics are simply the basic “look” or “feel” you want to give your character. Do they want to attract people with their clothes or do they want to be invisible and ignored?
I draw two teenagers who I want to be trendy, confident and cool. Here is a concept sketch I did with basic color blocking.
The practicality is choosing which clothing styles suit your characters based on your chosen aesthetic style.

In this picture, I’m drawing these two teenagers in Asian street fashion, so it makes sense to draw them in trendy clothes that are flattering and fit. I also make sure to use reference photos of people in this style so I can put my own spin on it here.
Remember to look for reference photos of everything! No matter how realistic or cartoony your style is, your character’s clothes will look great if they are based on reality in terms of how different clothes fit the body, where the seams are, etc.
The last thing to consider is personality! Personality is thinking about how your character’s outfit can tell a story. Think about the condition of your characters clothing or how they wear their clothes. For example, here I’ve drawn a female character with her coat off her shoulders to suggest that she might be a bit disheveled or incomplete.
Accessories, such as jewelry, can also serve as a great storytelling tool. Here I have matched two characters with necklaces suggesting they are close – either best friends or dating.

Now I’m adding a new story with a girl’s coat and a boy’s keychain with a customized image. This character could be the logo of a fashion brand they wear or from a TV show they both love!

I’ve already talked about the importance of aesthetics, practicality, personality and the use of references, which I did to come up with their original characters – but now I’m going to go a little deeper.

How do I make the queen evil? Many villains or bad characters have sharp shapes because we associate them with the risk of injury. To make my Rani character look violent and scary, I exaggerate every edge of her body and clothes to look very sharp. Obviously her hairstyle and outfit don’t really mean anything, but it’s nice to push the boundaries of where your character design is.
Now for the prince! How can I make him a good hearted person with just my design? Generally, letter designs use rounded shapes that represent tenderness or kindness. I’m making him smaller and rounder so he looks less threatening. I also rounded off the sharp parts like his blade and shoulder so they would be strong but not scary.
Now it’s time to color! I’m going to paint the prince and queen in the same three colors – blue, yellow and orange – to show how you can use color to highlight your character’s features.
Most good letter designs use a color scheme with one central color and at least two or three supporting colors. So, when painting your character, first think about where you want to draw the audience’s eye.

I wanted Rani’s color scheme to be mostly orange, so I made sure to use it for her spiky hair, dress and piercing eyes.
“Bad” characters are also associated with dark colors or gloomy, desaturated colors. I made the blues of the Queen’s dress very dark and used very light blues and yellows on her skin, gloves and collar to create a nice contrast.
For a brave and noble prince, it would make sense to use bright colors because they are friendly and inviting. I use blue and orange as her two main colors and yellow as accents on the edges of her clothes and as little highlights in her hair.
That’s all I have to say about fashion design! It’s important to remember when drawing that nothing is perfect on the first try, so don’t beat yourself up if you struggle a little! It took me several attempts to finalize the design you see here.
