Paint Design Ideas With Tape – I moved into my new house a few months ago and have been slowly renovating the unfinished basement leading to the bedroom. We weren’t ready to completely redo the basement yet, so I decided to add a few things to improve the shabby look!
Make sure the surface you are going to paint is clean and free of debris. Depending on the color scheme you want to use, it may be necessary to prepave the walls. In my case, I painted the walls in light gray and the door in matte black, and decided to use this color as the background.
Paint Design Ideas With Tape
If you don’t want to keep the current wall color as your base color for this project, install and paint the wall with the selected background color. It makes sense to use the color you like best throughout the geometric shape. Leave to dry overnight.
How To Box Wall Painting Ideas For Masking Tape
Using painter’s tape (I’ve personally had good luck using Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape, but for this project I used whatever I had at home) begin placing your geometric design on your accent wall. Make sure your tape is flat against the wall without raised ridges on the sides. This will ensure smooth lines when removing paint. I made up the design as I went and it worked in the end. This will take some time! I also placed some floating triangle shapes on the door on the left side of the wall using the same steps.
After I finished using the painter’s tape design, I started painting in sections. I used three different colors of Home Decor Chalk Paint by Folgard. I first used dark gray paint on the thin sections that outlined most of the shapes. I mixed black and white evenly throughout the rest of the shapes, leaving some as my original light gray background color.
I used a second coat on all the geometric shapes to make the color bolder. Gently peel off the tape while the paint is wet at a 45 degree angle. If you’ve seen photos of our home interiors, you know we love bold shapes and bright colors. In fact, there is only one room and bathroom on the ground floor that uses a neutral color palette.
Slowly, we get more adventurous with our DIY projects over the years. Combining my crafty skills and Lee’s vision, we created the perfect home decorating team.
Let’s Create Mountains!
When we first bought our house in 2018, we decided to try something different with the room; Big, bold, turquoise diamonds – what’s the worst that can happen, right? If it looks rubbish, we paint over it.
It went really well (as you can guess) so each room was a little bolder and a little more ambitious.
The goal was to use some of the old colors we had (expensive paint!) and what started out as a simple idea (painting the walls dark blue), eventually grew into something so beautiful and amazing.
The first thing we did was freshen up the walls with white paint. The wall had old markings and discoloration that we didn’t want to show, so we gave it two coats of white when we planned what it would look like.

I actually use Canva to help with this because it’s faster and easier than drawing by hand. We played around with the color scheme; Are we going for something random, or something more patterned?
Now that we know what we’re doing, it’s a case of hitting the wall. This is always the hardest part because it needs to be as accurate as possible, especially when you’re working with geometric shapes.
First I made horizontal lines to set up the structure. Unfortunately, doing this wall often feels like a math equation. We need to measure the height of the wall and then divide by a certain number of rows (while allowing tape in between) to get the height.
Once we set the lines, it becomes a matter of determining the height/width of the triangle. It’s just a little math and some guesswork. In the end, I made a template on paper with the exact dimensions to help me mark the walls (mainly so I could get the right angles).

Measuring, marking and taping each side of the triangle along each line (this took me hours!)
Since we have decided to use a shape, it is very important to draw correct triangles. If you only use two colors, it’s pretty straight forward – you can paint every other shape. But here I have three colors to deal with!
So I wrote B in pencil for the blue triangle and marked the white triangle with a bit of tape.
Top tip: Before you start painting, rub each bit of tape to make sure it’s properly attached to the wall, otherwise you’ll have some leaks.
Geometric Wall Paint
It’s a case of painting in every color. I started with blue and did a few layers before moving on to silver.
We found that the metallic paint left clear brush strokes on the wall that would look messy if they weren’t all going in the same direction. So the silver triangle took about three layers, and all the strokes were neat, even, and hard to go in the same direction for aesthetics.
I assume not all metallic paints behave this way, maybe because of the brand we bought.
Now, the tape needs to be removed when the paint is still wet. Sounds counter-intuitive, I know. However, if you wait until the wall is completely dry, there is a greater risk of chipping in the paint.
3d Wall Painting New Idea
I usually leave it on for half an hour to an hour and remove the tape and it’s the most satisfying feeling on the planet. All of a sudden, these clean lines started to appear and look great!
Of course, you will see all the mistakes; As if the paint bled because the tape didn’t seal well. But it can be fixed.
The touch is always there. A day or so later, after the wall was 100% dry, I went back with a small brush and touched up the areas that needed it.
The hallway is definitely my favorite wall, although I love everything we do for different reasons.

What do you think? Have you tried experimenting with masking tape? Want to check out our other painting projects? Today I painted a really cool accent wall for a business client and it’s too easy not to share. It is a great design that is easy enough for anyone to implement. Check out the broken down steps below.
Drawing this design is easier than it looks. It’s a simple paint, tape, paint, paint job. So this is it.
Step 1: First, paint the entire wall with your piece color (yellow in this case). You only need one coat of good quality paint as the base color won’t show through much. Let the paint dry completely.
Step 2: Use painter’s tape to create your pattern. Frog tape is the best brand, but any tape will work as long as you press it firmly. Run the credit card along the edge to really seal the tape. You can’t go wrong with this design. Cut strips of tape to different lengths and make trapezoids, triangles and pentagons of different sizes and angles.

Step 3: Paint over your tape with the same color paint (yellow in this case). (I skipped this step in the project because I ran out of paint. It meant extra work in the end.) Painting the same color as your tape creates a seal and prevents bleeding under the tape. This will save you a lot of touch ups later.
Step 4: Paint everything in your main color (white in this case). You’ll definitely want two or three coats, especially if you’re painting a lighter color than a dark one. I advise not to be too harsh with your colors (black over white for example) as you will need to paint a lot more coats.
Step 5: Carefully remove your tape before the paint is completely dry. Go slowly or you may pull the wall paint off your undercoat.
Voila! That’s it. You have a wonderful accent wall that you did yourself! I promise, anyone can do it. An 8′ by 10′ wall will take you 5 or 6 hours, a gallon of paint in each color, and a roll or two of painter’s tape. If that’s too much for you, call me. I will come and take care
