Preparation: To prepare my students for the project, we started by drawing a pattern on an A5 sheet of paper. See a quote from one of my slides below:

Transfer the A5 paper pattern (see PREPARATION) to the paper cup with a pen. One thing we’ve learned is to stuff the tissue paper tightly into the cup to prevent it from breaking under the pressure of the ink. Teach students to recognize the narrow spaces between the lines so they don’t overlap, which makes painting the background a little more difficult. STEP 2: Trace your pencil lines with a black marker

The best type of product for this stage would be a .05 or .07 point marker so that you can create good lines. Sometimes the ink will bleed in a thick line when it touches the paper cup depending on the type of paper you are using. So it is always safe to start with a thin line.
